Book Automatic Diatom Identification

Download or read book Automatic Diatom Identification written by Hans Du Buf and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to deal with automatic diatom identification. It provides the necessary background information concerning diatom research, useful for both diatomists and non-diatomists. It deals with the development of electronic databases, image preprocessing, automatic contour extraction, the application of existing contour and ornamentation features and the development of new ones, as well as the application of different classifiers (neural networks, decision trees, etc.). These are tested using two image sets: (i) a very difficult set of Sellaphora pupula with 6 demes and 120 images; (ii) a mixed genera set with 37 taxa and approximately 800 images. The results are excellent, and recognition rates well above 90% have been achieved on both sets. The results are compared with identification rates obtained by human experts. One chapter of the book deals with automatic image capture, i.e. microscope slide scanning at different resolutions using a motorized microscope stage, autofocusing, multifocus fusion, and particle screening to select only diatoms and to reject debris. This book is the final scientific report of the European ADIAC project (Automatic Diatom Identification and Classification), and it lists the web-sites with the created public databases and an identification demo.

Book Computer Recognition Systems

Download or read book Computer Recognition Systems written by Marek Kurzynski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 895 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th This book contains papers accepted for presentation at the 4 International Conference on Computer Recognition Systems CORES'05, May 22-25, 2005, Rydzyna Castle (Poland), This conference is a continuation of a series of con ferences on similar topics (KOSYR) organized each second year, since 1999, by the Chair of Systems and Computer Networks, Wroclaw University of Tech nology. An increasing interest to those conferences paid not only by home but also by foreign participants inspired the organizers to transform them into conferences of international range. Our expectations that the community of specialists in computer recognizing systems will find CORES'05 a proper form of maintaining the tradition of the former conferences have been confirmed by a large number of submitted papers. Alas, organizational constraints caused a necessity to narrow the acceptance criteria so that only 100 papers have been finally included into the conference program. The area covered by accepted papers is still very large and it shows how vivacious is scientific activity in the domain of computer recognition methods and systems. It contains vari ous theoretical approaches to the recognition problem based on mathematical statistics, fuzzy sets, morphological methods, wavelets, syntactic methods, genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks, ontological models, etc. Most attention is still paid to visual objects recognition; however, acoustic, tex tual and other objects are also considered. Among application areas medical problems are in majority; recognition of faces, speech signals and textual in formation processing methods being also investigated.

Book Automatic Detection of Rib Contours in Chest Radiographs

Download or read book Automatic Detection of Rib Contours in Chest Radiographs written by WECHSLER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1 Statement of the Problem This work describes a new and effective computer algorithm for detecting the contours of ribs in ehest radiographs. The problem, which is common to both the research areas of Machine Vision and Biomedical Computing, is to extract graphical information, such as that represented in Figure 1-lb, from a picture such as Figure 1-la. Figure 1-la shows a typical posterior-anterior (PA) ehest radiograph while Figure 1-lb shows a drawing of the ventral aspect of the thorax. lt is hoped that this researchwill contribute significantly toward developing an automated system for interpreting ehest radio graphs. 1.2 Why Have We Carried Out This Research? Since about one-third of the 650,000,000 medical radiographs (X-ray photographs) taken annually in the United States areehest radiographs, there is a growing awareness of the need for a computer aided system to help diagnose these radiographs. The detection of rib contours is, of course, a necessary element in such a system. In addition to being able to accommodate the need for a mass screening program, an automated systemalso has the ability to detect anomalies at earlier stages. Ziskin et al (1971) state that reliable 2 {a) Original Chest Radiograph Figure 1-1. Book Mathematics and Computer Science in Medical Imaging

Download or read book Mathematics and Computer Science in Medical Imaging written by Max A. Viergever and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical imaging is an important and rapidly expanding area in medical science. Many of the methods employed are essentially digital, for example computerized tomography, and the subject has become increasingly influenced by develop ments in both mathematics and computer science. The mathematical problems have been the concern of a relatively small group of scientists, consisting mainly of applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Their efforts have led to workable algorithms for most imaging modalities. However, neither the fundamentals, nor the limitations and disadvantages of these algorithms are known to a sufficient degree to the physicists, engineers and physicians trying to implement these methods. It seems both timely and important to try to bridge this gap. This book summarizes the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute, on these topics, that was held in the mountains of Tuscany for two weeks in the late summer of 1986. At another (quite different) earlier meeting on medical imaging, the authors noted that each of the speakers had given, there, a long introduction in their general area, stated that they did not have time to discuss the details of the new work, but proceeded to show lots of clinical results, while excluding any mathematics associated with the area.

Book Recognition of Partially Occluded Elliptical Objects Using Symmetry on Contour

Download or read book Recognition of Partially Occluded Elliptical Objects Using Symmetry on Contour written by June-Suh Cho and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we have discussed how to estimate parameters and to reconstruct the occluded shape of partial elliptical objects in image databases. In order to reconstruct occluded shapes, we used mirror symmetry, which provides powerful method for the partial object recognition. Unlike the existing methods, a proposed method tried to reconstruct occluded shapes and regions within objects, since most objects in a domain have symmetrical figures. However, we have limitations in the shape of objects and the occluded region of objects. For example, if a pan has an occlusion in handle, it cannot correctly reconstruct and be recognized. Another minor limitation of a proposed method is that it is sensitive to the pose of an object. For example, if we cannot see an ellipse due to the object's pose, we cannot recognize the object. After estimation, we have applied inputs, which include estimated parameters, to the existing classification trees, to get to the best matching class. All experiments are performed based on the classifier in earlier work. In experiments, the results show that the recognition of the occluded object is properly reconstructed, estimated, and classified, even though we have limited to the size of samples. In addition, we have experienced the power of the symmetry through experiments.
