Book Detection of Damage in Structures from Changes in Their Dynamic modal Properties

Download or read book Detection of Damage in Structures from Changes in Their Dynamic modal Properties written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the newly developed technology in vibration measurement, digital signal processing and parameter identification can be utilized for monitoring the integrity of a variety of structural components in nuclear power plants. Although vibration levels in certain key components such as coolant pumps, turbo generators and the reactor core are currently monitored, simple checking of overall vibration levels is often not a sensitive enough indicator of impending failure in a structure. A more sophisticated approach to signal processing is examined which involves the identification of parameters describing the so called modes of vibration of a vibrating structure.

Book Application of Vibration based Techniques for Modal Identification and Damage Detection in Structures

Download or read book Application of Vibration based Techniques for Modal Identification and Damage Detection in Structures written by Chaewoon Lim and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All structures such as bridges, buildings and dams are deteriorated by environmental conditions like corrosion, earthquake and traffic after they are built. Therefore, vibration-based damage identification (VBDI) techniques have attracted attention to verify the safety and functionality of structures. Conventional damage identification techniques such as non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods have many obstacles and are not practical to be implemented in order to detect damage. One of the main obstacles is that the conventional methods are focused on local structural damage and easily affected by measurement noise. Moreover, there are several uncertainties that restrict the successful application of the damage detection. On the other hand, vibration-based techniques can be used when the global vibration characteristics is available. To do this, it is required to perform modal identification, perform model updating, and detect local changes in a structure. The objectives of this study are: (a) to develop vibration-based techniques for modal identification by output-only information through the experimental and numerical study of bridges and frame structures; and (b) to study the VBDI techniques to perform model updating and damage detection using the changes in the dynamic characteristics of structures and determine their performance in practical structures. Two existing bridges, a Pre-stressed Concrete Bridge (PSCB) and a Steel Box Bridge (STB) tested earlier were used here as case studies and the data from the vibration test were used to verify modal identification using output-only information. In this study, two output-only methods, Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) and Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) were studied to compare the results from the vibration test. In addition to this, laboratory experiments on three-story steel frame were carried out to generate additional data for testing the system identification and model updating methods. Further, various damage scenarios were created in the frame to obtain the vibration signals corresponding to such conditions. The vibration data from the undamaged and damaged frame were used to study the performance of existing VBDI methods. Based on the above study, it is concluded that both FDD and SSI techniques provide accurate results for modal identification in the case of studied structures. FDD is relatively simpler, but it may miss some modal information when two modes are closer. However, in the cases studied here, the modes are quite apart from each other. Among many available VBDI methods, the matrix update method performs better than others when the measurement noise is small. Otherwise, data-driven models such as those based on Genetic Algorithm should be used.

Book System and Damage Identification of Civil Structures

Download or read book System and Damage Identification of Civil Structures written by Babak Moaveni and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, structural health monitoring has received increasing attention in the civil engineering research community with the objective to identify structural damage at the earliest possible stage and evaluate the remaining useful life (damage prognosis) of structures. Vibration-based, non-destructive damage identification is based on changes in dynamic characteristics (e.g., modal parameters) of a structure for identifying structural damage. Experimental modal analysis (EMA) has been used as a technology for identifying modal parameters of a structure based on its measured vibration data. It should be emphasized that the success of damage identification based on EMA depends strongly on the accuracy and completeness of the identified structural dynamic properties. The objective of the research work presented in this thesis is to develop new, and improve/extend existing system identification and damage identification methods for vibration based structural health monitoring. In the first part of the thesis, a new system identification method is developed to identify modal parameters of linear dynamic systems subjected to measured (known) arbitrary dynamic loading from known initial conditions. In addition, a comparative study is performed to investigate the performance of several state-of-the-art input-output and output-only system identification methods when applied to actual large structural components and systems. In the second part of the thesis, a finite element model updating strategy, a sophisticated damage identification method, is formulated and computer implemented. This method is then successfully applied for damage identification of two large test structures, namely a full-scale sub-component composite beam and a full-scale seven-story R/C building slice, at various damage levels. The final part of the thesis investigates, based on numerical response simulation of the seven-story building slice, the effects of the variability/uncertainty of several input factors on the variability/uncertainty of system identification and damage identification results. The results of this investigation demonstrate that the level of confidence in the damage identification results obtained through FE model updating is a function of not only the level of uncertainty in the identified modal parameters, but also choices made in the design of experiments (e.g., spatial density of measurements) and modeling errors (e.g., mesh size).

Book Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures written by Antonino Morassi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non destructive testing aimed at monitoring, structural identification and di- nostics is of strategic importance in many branches of civil and mechanical - gineering. This type of tests is widely practiced and directly affects topical issues regarding the design of new buildings and the repair and monitoring of existing ones. The load bearing capacity of a structure can now be evaluated using well established mechanical modelling methods aided by computing facilities of great capability. However, to ensure reliable results, models must be calibrated with - curate information on the characteristics of materials and structural components. To this end, non destructive techniques are a useful tool from several points of view. Particularly, by measuring structural response, they provide guidance on the validation of structural descriptions or of the mathematical models of material behaviour. Diagnostic engineering is a crucial area for the application of non destructive testing methods. Repeated tests over time can indicate the emergence of p- sible damage occurring during the structure's lifetime and provide quantitative estimates of the level of residual safety.

Book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. Book An Overview of Modal based Damage Identification Methods

Download or read book An Overview of Modal based Damage Identification Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an overview of methods that examine changes in measured vibration response to detect, locate, and characterize damage in structural and mechanical systems. The basic idea behind this technology is that modal parameters (notably frequencies, mode shapes, and modal damping) are functions of the physical properties of the structure (mass, damping, and stiffness). Therefore, changes in the physical properties will cause detectable changes in the modal properties. The motivation for the development of this technology is first provided. The methods are then categorized according to various criteria such as the level of damage detection provided, model-based vs. non-model-based methods and linear vs. nonlinear methods. This overview is limited to methods that can be adapted to a wide range of structures (i.e., are not dependent on a particular assumed model form for the system such as beam-bending behavior and methods and that are not based on updating finite element models). Next, the methods are described in general terms including difficulties associated with their implementation and their fidelity. Past, current and future-planned applications of this technology to actual engineering systems are summarized. The paper concludes with a discussion of critical issues for future research in the area of modal-based damage identification.
