Book Evaluation of Genotyping Techniques for Crytosporidium Parvum

Download or read book Evaluation of Genotyping Techniques for Crytosporidium Parvum written by Paul A. Rochelle and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2001 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research teams reports on its efforts to develop and implement DNA fingerprinting techniques to characterize and differentiate the parvus species of protozoal parasite that is ubiquitous in rivers and lakes, is relatively resistant to chlorine disinfection at commonly used concentrations, and can prove fatal for immune compromised people who become infected. They evaluate fingerprinting methods based on polymerase chain reaction, determine which method is most suitable for determining strains or isolates within a species, implement the most appropriate molecular method for determining whether the isolates can be differentiated based on its animal or human host or geographical source, and determine the particular source of the protozoa contamination in source water. The report is not indexed. c. Book News Inc.

Book Evaluation of TaqMan Real time PCR for the Detection of Viable Cryptosporidium Parvum Oocysts in Environmental Water Samples

Download or read book Evaluation of TaqMan Real time PCR for the Detection of Viable Cryptosporidium Parvum Oocysts in Environmental Water Samples written by Melissa A. Cameron and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Cryptosporidium parvum is of growing public health concern due to its ability to survive typical water treatment processes. In order to protect the public from infection, the Environmental Protection Agency developed Method 1623 for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in environmental water samples. Execution of this method is time consuming, and the results do not provide an accurate estimation of viability. Therefore, current research is focused on creating a real-time PCR method for the accurate detection of viable Cryptosporidium parvum in environmental water samples. This thesis presents the development of a real-time PCR method, and the results obtained in its use on field samples. The assay was standardized using multiple dilution series in addition to positive and negative controls. Environmental water samples were tested using this method and Method 1623 for comparison. The results were compared statistically to determine the degree of correlation between methods. The data show that the real-time PCR method correlates well to Method 1623. In addition, the assay was determined to be more cost effective and less labor intensive than Method 1623. Although these early findings are promising, additional research and development are needed before the proposed assay can be used in industry.

Book Methods for Detecting and Assessing Factors Influencing Transport of Oocysts of Cryptosporidium Parvum in Soil

Download or read book Methods for Detecting and Assessing Factors Influencing Transport of Oocysts of Cryptosporidium Parvum in Soil written by Mark Joseph Walker and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum are ubiquitous in surface water. One potential source is farm wastes from animal agriculture. The connection between areas where farm wastes are spread or stored and water courses is not well understood. The key to understanding the connection is found in soils, particularly for agricultural operations that depend upon daily disposal of wastes by land-spreading.

Book Principles Application and Assessment in Soil Science

Download or read book Principles Application and Assessment in Soil Science written by Burcu E. Ozkaraova Gungor and published by IntechOpen. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our dependence on soil, and our curiosity about it, is leading to the investigation of changes within soil processes. Furthermore, the diversity and dynamics of soil are enabling new discoveries and insights, which help us to understand the variations in soil processes. Consequently, this permits us to take the necessary measures for soil protection, thus promoting soil health. This book aims to provide an up-to-date account of the current state of knowledge in recent practices and assessments in soil science. Moreover, it presents a comprehensive evaluation of the effect of residue/waste application on soil properties and, further, on the mechanism of plant adaptation and plant growth. Interesting examples of simulation using various models dealing with carbon sequestration, ecosystem respiration, and soil landscape, etc. are demonstrated. The book also includes chapters on the analysis of areal data and geostatistics using different assessment methods. More recent developments in analytical techniques used to obtain answers to the various physical mechanisms, chemical, and biological processes in soil are also present.
