With that being said, the information in this book is true and accurate with applicable case law to back it up. After each section of this book you will find numerous case laws with brief descriptions that will support what was just stated. Feel free to research the case laws and read the full scenario of what happened to bring about the case law. Also, the "examples" given in this book are taken from actual events so everything is true to life. Police Encounters: Know Your Rights is straight forward and very easy to understand. If you didn't know the answers to the questions asked, then you need to get this book. There is no telling how many times your civil rights have already been violated, and you didn't have the slightest idea. If you have a friend or loved one in college, this is the book for them. If you have brushes with the law, then this is the book for you. There is information in here that you didn't know about, that I guarantee. Now is the time to gain this new knowledge so that you can be mentally aware for you and those close to you. There is information in this book that you may only need to know one time, but that one time can be the difference between freedom and life in prison, or remaining a sexual assault victim or fighting back with the law. The knowledge is here, I suggest you give it a once over because I've personally sent people to prison who didn't know when to ask for a lawyer. Grant, they did the crime, but a lawyer could have helped negotiate a lighter sentence for a confession and cooperation. Don't be one of these people.

The DTA contains provisions that require Department of Defense (DoD) personnel to employ U.S. Army Field Manual guidelines while interrogating detainees, and prohibits the "cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment of persons under the detention, custody, or control of the U.S. Government." These provisions of the DTA, which were first introduced by Senator John McCain, have popularly been referred to as the "McCain Amendment." All concerned agree that, while interrogation practices represent a crucial meeting ground between human rights and counter-terrorism measures, the limits placed on interrogators are perhaps the most difficult to define for they determine how "far" a civil society is willing to go in fighting the exigencies that terror presents. In The Constitutional Limits of Coercive Investigation, Amos Guiora offers a theoretical analysis and a practical application of coercive interrogation, and in doing so, suggests developing and implementing a hybrid paradigm based on American criminal law, the Geneva Convention, and the Israeli model of trial as the most relevant judicial regime. Guiora offers a unique contribution to the public debate by creatively utilizing a historical analysis of the system of "justice" for African-Americans in the Deep South of the past century to serve as a guide for the constitutional rights and protections which need to be granted or extended to an unprotected class. But as Shane O’Mara writes in this account of the human brain under stress, another reason torture should never be condoned is because it does not work the way torturers assume it does. In countless films and TV shows such as Homeland and 24, torture is portrayed as a harsh necessity. If cruelty can extract secrets that will save lives, so be it. CIA officers and others conducted torture using precisely this justification. But does torture accomplish what its defenders say it does? For ethical reasons, there are no scientific studies of torture. But neuroscientists know a lot about how the brain reacts to fear, extreme temperatures, starvation, thirst, sleep deprivation, and immersion in freezing water, all tools of the torturer’s trade. These stressors create problems for memory, mood, and thinking, and sufferers predictably produce information that is deeply unreliable—and, for intelligence purposes, even counterproductive. As O’Mara guides us through the neuroscience of suffering, he reveals the brain to be much more complex than the brute calculations of torturers have allowed, and he points the way to a humane approach to interrogation, founded in the science of brain and behavior. Torture may be effective in forcing confessions, as in Stalin’s Russia. But if we want information that we can depend on to save lives, O’Mara writes, our model should be Napoleon: “It has always been recognized that this way of interrogating men, by putting them to torture, produces nothing worthwhile.”
