Book excerpt: The 00 gauge ready-to-run market has changed dramatically over the past decade, with supreme levels of accuracy, detail, finish and mechanical performance now becoming the standard benchmark of all new models. As the hobby continues to blossom, an increasing range of steam, diesel and electric subjects now find themselves in the catalogues of the leading manufacturers. Have the days of super-detailing and repainting our models now gone, or is there still a place for a more 'hands-on' approach to the hobby of railway modelling? • Pages : 203 pages

Download or read book Mallard written by Don Hale and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just over eighty years ago on the East Coast main line, the streamlined A4 Pacific locomotive Mallard reached a top speed of 126mph – a world record for steam locomotives that still stands. Since then, millions have seen this famous locomotive, resplendent in her blue livery, on display at the National Railway Museum in York. Here, Don Hale tells the full story of how the record was broken: from the nineteenth-century London–Scotland speed race and, surprisingly, traces Mallard's futuristic design back to the Bugatti car and the influence of Germany's nascent Third Reich, which propelled the train into an instrument of national prestige. He also celebrates Mallard's designer, Sir Nigel Gresley, one of Britain's most gifted engineers. Mallard is a wonderful tribute to one of British technology's finest hours.

Book The Metropolitan Vickers Type 2 Co Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives

Download or read book The Metropolitan Vickers Type 2 Co Bo Diesel Electric Locomotives written by Anthony P. Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough history of the Metropolitan-Vickers locomotive, also known as “Class 28,” featuring 160 color and black & white photos. This book provides an in-depth history of the Metropolitan-Vickers diesel-electric Type 2 locomotives, more frequently known collectively as the “Co-Bo’s” due to their unusual wheel arrangement. Twenty locomotives were constructed during the late-1950s for use on the London Midland Region of British Railways. The fleet was fraught with difficulties from the start, most notably due to problems with their Crossley engines, this necessitating the need for extensive rehabilitation work during the early-1960s. Matters barely improved and the option to completely re-engine the locomotives with English Electric units was debated at length, but a downturn in traffic levels ultimately resulted in their demise by the end of 1968 prior to any further major rebuilding work being carried out. Significant quantities of new archive and personal sighting information, supported by over 180 photographs and diagrams, have been brought together to allow dramatic new insights into this enigmatic class of locomotives, including the whole debate surrounding potential re-engining, their works histories, the extended periods in storage, together with in-depth reviews of the various detail differences and liveries.

Book Weathering for Railway Modellers

Download or read book Weathering for Railway Modellers written by George Dent and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once seen as a niche practice, the craft of weathering has now become firmly rooted in the railway modelling mainstream. Not simply a means of rendering models in layers of dirty paint, weathering involves a myriad of techniques aimed at improving realism, including distinctive surface textures, highlights and shading, burnishing and peeling paint finishes. The weathering process brings out the best in a model, making moulded relief or a lustrous livery really stand out. As well as replicating the real world more closely, weathering also helps a model to look at home within a scenic setting. Aimed at modellers of all abilities and eras, this book is an essential guide to creating the most realistic locomotives and rolling stock in any scale. It includes: a guide to tools, paints, washes, dry pigments and other innovative media; the correct techniques for model preparation; a wide range of techniques for wagons, carriages, locomotives and multiple units in any scale; how to replicate authentic surface textures and effects, from polished surfaces to corroded metal and worn timber; how to bring models to life with faded paintwork, peeling and chipped finishes and subtle highlights and shading; the secret to successful airbrushing. This book will be of great interest to railway modellers of varying abilities, particularly those interested in rolling stock and locomotives, and is fully illustrated with 660 colour photographs.
