This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most US coals contain sulfur concentrations that prevent their being burned without some form of sulfur removal. Current coal-cleaning technology can only remove the fairly reactive pyritic (inorganic) and aliphatic (organic) sulfur. A process which removes the more refractory hetero-aromatic sulfur could substantially increase the amount of coal reserves amenable to chemical cleaning. Sodium metal dispersions convert refractor model compounds into lighter desulfurized products and non-volatile sulfur-rich char. When treated with sodium, coal-derived solids show substantial desulfurization. The same treatment applied to coal-derived liquids, when combined with vacuum distillation of the reaction product, yields a desulfurized light distillate, an increase in absolute amount of distillate, and retention of sulfur in the vacuum residue. The presence of sodium in the residue allows fixation of the residual sulfur as Na2SO4 upon combustion, eliminating production of SO2 in the flue gas. Intimate contacting of sodium salts with high sulfur coal also fixes 97 to 99% of the sulfur as Na2SO4 upon combustion. This technique takes advantage of the high energy available for carbon-sulfur bond cleavage during combustion and the reaction of SO2 to form Na2SO4 to provide an inexpensive method for complete coal desulfurization.

Book excerpt: This book was written to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state-of-the-art information in coal preparation, with particular emphasis on coal desulfrization. The primary audience for this book will be practising coal preparation engineers who need complete information about all of the coal preparation and desulphurization technologies that are available now, or that may be available in the future. It will also be valuable for coal researchers who need details and comparative data for cutting-edge technologies that are still under development. The main emphasis is on physical coal preparation, but chapters also include chemical and biological technologies that are under development, but not yet used in industrial practice. Along with the successful technologies, also included are details of processes and techniques that were attempted, but were subsequently abandoned, along with discussions of the reasons they were abandoned.

Book excerpt: During this quarter the studies on the selective desulfurization of coal were initiated. Specifically most of our efforts this quarter were place in developing selective reaction chemistries within a supercritical carbon dioxide system that would provide significant desulfurization of the organic matrix of coal. The first system of interest is the possible desulfurization of coal by oxidation with solvated cupric ions. The reaction of copper chloride with sulfur moieties in coal was first studied by Lompa-Krzymien. (As mention in the original proposal). In the case of Lompa-Krzymien's work this reaction was claimed to yield desulfurization rates as high as 95% for Prince Coal from Nova Scotia. Later work by Singh et al. confirmed that coal could be desulfurized by copper chloride but the percentage desulfurization was always lower than that described by LompaKrzymien. Now that we have managed to dissolve the oxidant in a supercritical system, we will search for conditions under which the redox reaction is allowed in the supercritical state. In addition, we will be running parallel reactions of the model coal compounds in the pure liquid modifier to provide a reference for the reactivity of the oxidant in liquids. We will also be looking at the possible use of other oxidants in additions to cupric salts.

Book Microbial Transformations of Low Rank Coals

Download or read book Microbial Transformations of Low Rank Coals written by Don L. Crawford and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-09-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen leading scientists active in research on the chemistry, microbiology, enzymology, and genetics of coal biotransformation summarize knowledge of the mechanisms by which bacteria and fungi metabolize the macromolecular structure of lignite coals. They also explore the potential for developing commercially viable biotransformations of low rank coals into useful chemicals and clean-burning liquid and gaseous fuels. Microbial Transformations of Low Rank Coals reviews the types of aerobic and anaerobic microbes known to transform fuel and discusses the relative potential of aerobic versus anaerobic organisms. Biochemical mechanisms used by microorganisms to solubilize, depolymerize, liquify, and gasify coal are examined. The book also reviews the potential for using microorganisms to remove organic sulfur from coal and the potential for using genetic engineering to improve coal biotransforming microorganisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute on "Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Catalytic Solid Fuel Conversion for the Production of aean Synthetic Fuels" which was held at Ak~;ay, Edremit, Tiirkiye, between July 21 and August 3, 1991. The book includes 23 chapters originally written for the meeting by distinguished scientists an technologists in the field. l would like to acknowledge the contribution of each of the authors in the book. Their efforts have shed light on our understanding in coal science research and better utilization of coal. Three main subjects: structure and reactivity of coal; cleaning of coal and its products, and factors affecting environmental balance of energy usage and solutions for future, were discussed in the Institute and these are presented under six groups in the book. I hope that of great use to research workers from academic and industrial background. the book will be Many people contributed to the success of the Institute on which this volume was based. I take this occasion to thank my colleagues who lectured in the Institute, both for their efforts during the two weeks and their expertly prepared lecture notes that reached to me in time. The Institute was generously sponsored by the Scientific and Environmental Affairs Dh·ision of the NATO and their contribution is deeply acknowledged.
