Book Destress Blasting at Campbell Red Lake Mine

Download or read book Destress Blasting at Campbell Red Lake Mine written by A. Makuch and published by CANMET. This book was released on 1987 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Destress blasting is commonly used in rockburst-prone pillars in thin steeply-dipping orebodies to fracture the rock and reduce the stresses acting on the pillar. Since 1982, 4 destress blasts have been done in pillars at Campbell Red Lake Mine. This report explores rock mechanics concepts of destressing and identifies the parameters of a successful destress blast; describes the first 3 destress blasts in cut and fill crown pillars and shrinkage boxhole pillars and documents the reasons for destressing, the design, instrumentation used and post-blast observations; and describes the extensive monitoring of the 4th destress blast, including the computer modelling and its comparison with in situ measurement of stress and convergence.

Download or read book Rockbursts written by Wilson Blake and published by Society for Mining Metallurgy & Exploration. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occurrence of rockbursts poses a significant and growing threat to mines--and miners--throughout North America. High stress on brittle rock structures during mining operations can produce sudden, explosive reactions that result in costly mine failures, serious injury, and even death. Using a series of case studies, this essential reference documents the experiences of 15 of the most rockburst-prone mines in the US and Canada over the last century. The book provides an historical analysis of rockburst activity along with state-of-the-art strategies for anticipating and preventing this dangerous and disruptive phenomenon. This vital resource provides a primer on rockbursts, including an examination of the conditions that favor their occurrence. The text highlights practical methods to alleviate this danger, including controlling blasting times, changing mining methods, altering the extraction sequence, utilizing backfill, employing de-stress blasting, and using yielding supports. Packed with dozens of cost-saving and potentially life-saving ideas, this book is an important resource for mining engineers and operators who work in hard-rock mines. Chapters include: The Rockburst Phenomenon Brunswick Mine (Bathurst, New Brunswick) Lake Shore Mine (Kirkland Lake, Ontario) Lake Shore and Wright-Hargreaves Mines at Depth Macassa Mine (Kirkland Lake, Ontario) Falconbridge No. 5 Shaft (Sudbury, Ontario) Strathcona Mine (Onaping, Ontario) Creighton Mine (Sudbury, Ontario) Copper Cliff North Mine (Sudbury, Ontario) Quirke Mine (Elliot Lake, Ontario) Campbell Mine (Red Lake, Ontario) Lucky Friday Mine (Mullen, Idaho) Star Mine (Burke, Idaho) Galena Mine (Wallace, Idaho) Sunshine Mine (Kellogg, Idaho) Rockbursting at Kirkland Lake and Coeur d'Alene)

Book Assessment and Prevention of Failure Phenomena in Rock Engineering

Download or read book Assessment and Prevention of Failure Phenomena in Rock Engineering written by O. Aydan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993. This volume is a collection of papers addressing the issue of the failure of rock engineering structures. This phenomenon occurs in different forms depending on the geometry of structure, material properties of intact rock, structure of rock mass, environmental conditions and initial state of stress.

Book A Five year Review of the Canada Ontario Industry Rockburst Project

Download or read book A Five year Review of the Canada Ontario Industry Rockburst Project written by D. G. F. Hedley and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canada-Ontario-Industry Rockburst project was initiated in 1984 because of the re-emergence of a serious rockbursting problem in some of Ontario's mines. This report reviews the accomplishments realized during the first 5 years of the project, from 1984-89. The report describes the problem of seismicity in Ontario mines, seismic monitoring systems, scaling relationships, and the work conducted at the mines at Elliot Lake, Kirkland Lake, Red Lake, and Sudbury by each company involved. A list of publications and the personnel involved in the project are also included.

Download or read book Seismicity in Mines written by G. Gibowicz and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent seismological research has focused on processes other than pure shear failure (double-couple) as an alternative mechanism for some types of seismic events. This has been stimulated by what appears to be anomalous focal mecha nisms observed for several earthquakes of possible volcanic nature in the 1980 Mammoth Lakes, California sequence (JULIAN and SIPKIN, 1985; SIPKIN, 1986). Although studies have concentrated on earthquakes associated with magmatic processes, possible non-double-couple seismic failure has been observed, but not widely known, in cases of mine seismicity in the past three decades. Such cases have occurred on a world-wide basis; however, no cases until now have been observed in the United States. The existence of non-double-couple failure in mine seismicity has been controversial as it has been for tectonic/volcanic earthquakes. Several of the benchmark studies of mine seismicity in the deep South African gold mines have resulted in the belief that no fundamental distinction in the source mechanism exists between tectonic earthquakes and rock bursts (MCGARR, 1984); both types of events are the result of pure shear failure. However, the reported cases of implo sional focal mechanisms for mine seismicity continue to increase in number and prolong the controversy. During the summer of 1984, a three-dimensional, high resolution micro earthquake network was operated by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) in the vicinity of two coal mines beneath Gentry Mountain in the eastern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah.
