Book excerpt: "Destiny Ours is a wonderful story of faith, courage and survival and a welcome addition to the history of the Greatest Generation." -Senator Bob Dole. This is the story of Capt. William F. Duffy, first man to drop a bomb on Japan in WWII from a B-29, later missing in action over Singapore. Before Duffy passed away - October 18, 1991 - his son made a promise to write his story. William, Jr. and his wife, Jan, traveled to Malaysia in July 1997 and spent six weeks retracing his father's footsteps, located the crash site of the B-29, gathered scraps of the wreckage, and visited with Malays who were present that fateful morning of January 11, 1945. Spanning seven years and countless hours of research, writing, and review, Duffy's son expanded his father's diary of his 8 month, 600 mile trek barefoot through the jungles of Malaya three degrees off the equator. Capt. Duffy battled thick jungle, swamps, swollen rivers, monsoon rains, jungle leeches, disease, death, the Chinese communist guerrillas, and the struggle to stay alive and out of the grasp of the Japanese enemy. Fulfilling his promise to his wife, Peggy: "If they tell you I'm missing or dead don't believe it, I'm coming back!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement is a paradigm-shifting publication that presents the Civil Rights Movement through the work of nine photographers who participated in the movement as activists with SNCC, SCLC, and CORE. Unlike images produced by photojournalists, who covered breaking news events, these photographers lived within the movement—primarily within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) framework—and documented its activities by focusing on the student activists and local people who together made it happen. The core of the book is a selection of 150 black-and-white photographs, representing the work of photographers Bob Adelman, George Ballis, Bob Fitch, Bob Fletcher, Matt Herron, David Prince, Herbert Randall, Maria Varela, and Tamio Wakayama. Images are grouped around four movement themes and convey SNCC's organizing strategies, resolve in the face of violence, impact on local and national politics, and influence on the nation's consciousness. The photographs and texts of This Light of Ours remind us that the movement was a battleground, that the battle was successfully fought by thousands of “ordinary” Americans among whom were the nation's courageous youth, and that the movement's moral vision and impact continue to shape our lives.

Book God Churchill

Download or read book God Churchill written by Jonathan Sandys and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Winston Churchill was a boy of sixteen, he already had a vision for his purpose in life. “This country will be subjected somehow to a tremendous invasion . . . I shall be in command of the defences of London . . . it will fall to me to save the Capital, to save the Empire.” It was a most unlikely prediction. Perceived as a failure for much of his life, Churchill was the last person anyone would have expected to rise to national prominence as prime minister and influence the fate of the world during World War II. But Churchill persevered, on a mission to achieve his purpose. God and Churchill tells the remarkable story of how one man, armed with belief in his divine destiny, embarked on a course to save Christian civilization when Adolf Hitler and the forces of evil stood opposed. It traces the personal, political, and spiritual path of one of history’s greatest leaders and offers hope for our own violent and troubled times. More than a spiritual biography, God and Churchill is also a deeply personal quest. Written by Jonathan Sandys (Churchill’s great-grandson) and former White House staffer Wallace Henley, God and Churchill explores Sandys’ intense search to discover his great-grandfather—and how it changed his own destiny forever.

His story, like ours, began outside of time and space and body. He journeys all the way from a spiritual plane far from ordinary experience, to conception, through cellular and fetal development, then ends with his birth. He narrates this story of changes, love and even his fears, through poetic verse in various forms, with accurate information, and accompanied by twelve enchanting illustrations painted by the author. For anyone of us who has ever been a mom, is expecting to be a mom, or loves someone who is; for anyone who has ever had a mom - or knows someone who has - let this little book transport us back to our beginnings and remind us all of our divine humanity.

Book excerpt: THE PAINTER, inspired by the life of an Italian artist who emigrated to America after World War II, plunges the reader into the life of fictional Lorenzo Frasca, his life of daring achievement, grinding employment, moral struggle with the cruel insanity of his young wife, tender attachment to her fragile daughter, his transcendent love of an older woman, and his ultimate creation of a masterpiece for a Spanish prince who becomes his patron. American and European cultures nourish his maturation. The artists history is told to and through Luke Cosic, a chance dinner companion who is subsumed by the painter and his art. The fifteenth century classic, Cennino dAndrea Cenninis Il Libro dellArte, (The Craftsmans Handbook), is the foundation of Lorenzos character and work.
