Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Full of wonder." —Elizabeth Acevedo A Best Book of the Year at BuzzFeed, Refinery29, and Entropy Magazine What makes a self? In her remarkable debut collection of poems, Destiny O. Birdsong writes fearlessly towards this question. Laced with ratchetry, yet hungering for its own respectability, Negotiations is about what it means to live in this America, about Cardi B and top-tier journal publications, about autoimmune disease and the speaker’s intense hunger for her own body—a surprise of self-love in the aftermath of both assault and diagnosis. It’s a series of love letters to black women, who are often singled out for abuse and assault, silencing and tokenism, fetishization and cultural appropriation in ways that throw the rock, then hide the hand. It is a book about tenderness and an indictment of people and systems that attempt to narrow black women’s lives, their power. But it is also an examination of complicity—both a narrative and a black box warning for a particular kind of self-healing that requires recognizing culpability when and where it exists.

Book excerpt: In order to fully appreciate the author’s ideas for creating this work, an understanding of an epic poem is necessary. An epic poem consists of a lengthy narrative. It is about a segment of time and place in which someone (a hero or such) conveys his thoughts, feelings and experiences into verse. The verse is not a simple one. It is based on dactylic hexameter as in Homer’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey” from ancient times, or Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. Dante and Virgil, the Roman poet, traveled through hell, purgatory and paradise in order to reach God. Another example is Virgil’s “Aeneid”. In this work, Mr. Bucci describes the thoughts and feelings as he experienced them in his coming to America. He included the people he met in his journey through life. Mr. Bucci greatly admired the land that he had become a part of. He struggled through the hardships and trials of life, including the “great depression” of 1929. The hopes and dreams of everyone, he felt were dependent on each individual’s freedom to reach out to the opportunities that America could offer them. His work offers hope and encouragement to all who would listen to his words of wisdom. This poem was how he saw the current times in America, the land that he valued and loved so much.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning collection of poems that vividly capture the astonishing emotional range of an entire romance from beginning to end. Jimmy Santiago Baca introduces us to a man and woman before they are acquainted and re-creates their first meeting, falling in love, their decision to make a family, the eventual realization of each other’s irreconcilable faults, the resulting conflicts, the breakup and hostility, and, finally, their transcendence of the bitterness and resentment. Throughout the relationship we are privy to the couple’s anguish of loneliness, the heady rush of new love, the irritations and joys of raising children, the difficulties in truly knowing someone, the doldrums of breakup, and so on. It is impossible not to identify with these characters and to recognize the universal drama of human connection. As he weaves this story, Baca explores many of his traditional themes: the beauty and cruelty of the desert lands where he spent much of his life, the grace and wisdom of animals, and the quiet dignity of life on small Chicano farms. An extraordinary work that “expresses both bliss and heartache with lyric intensity” from one of America’s finest poets (Booklist). “Baca is a force in American poetry . . . His words heal, inspire, and elicit the earthly response of love.” —Garrett Hongo “[Baca] writes with unconcealed passion . . . what makes his writing so exciting to me is the way in which it manifests both an intense lyricism and that transformative vision which perceives the mythic and archetypal significance of life-events.” —Denise Levertov

Book The Biggest Egg in the World

Download or read book The Biggest Egg in the World written by Marin Sorescu and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hatched in Belfast by a clutch of poets, egged on by the Romanian poet, eight writers well up the poetry pecking order cooked up this book in tribute to the Romanian master chef. These are not hard-boiled translations but lightly scrambled versions, and if some seem flavoured with Heaney, Hughes, or Constantine, that's quite in keeping with the anarchic free-ranging spirit of Sorescu's comic genius. Our poets have poached freely from the original ingredients and whisked up a souffle of intriguing flavour and virtuosity. The translations are by Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney, D.J. Enright, David Constantine, Michael Longley, Paul Muldoo, and William Scammell working with literal versions by Ioana Russell-Gebbett, and by Michael Hamburger.

Book excerpt: The World: where words are hidden beneath the stars, where sorrow surface above the sky, where love lost and found behind this page. Never doubt your first 'word' because the rawness of that word has your feeling. There is no right and wrong because I'm THE RIGHT AND WRONG to myself. Jarunee H. Ward

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our dance with destiny begins from the womb to the tomb; the dance never stops. As long as we are breathing we dance; Life is for living, life is for enjoying and life is for exalting. Enchanting Dance with Destiny is poems collected over many years of deep observations, appreciations and reminisces of life’s beautiful and complex encounters. Over a considerable number of years I have reflected on how life presents us with a golden platter; a desirable celebratory gift tray, with luxurious contents elegantly packaged to conceal its substance. The alluring look of each gleaming piece attracts nothing but irresistible smiles, glittering eyes with great expectations. I have also observed and experienced the joys, the celebrations and the frustrations. Enchanting Dance with Destiny as a poetry book touches on love, loyalty, passion and fear; all of which are values and strong emotion which are highly essential for living a fulfilled life. This book is packed with similes, metaphors, allegories, alliterations and thought provoking imageries that takes the reader into unfathomable dreamland. It is bound to tickle your imagination and lead you into searching for more.
