En même temps, elle porte sur le rôle des collectivités immigrantes déjà établies à l'égard du choix de leur lieu d'établissement par les nouveaux immigrants. Les résultats montrent une augmentation marquée des niveaux de concentration quant à la destination initiale parmi les principaux groupes d'immigrants tout au long des années 1970 et 1980, tendance qui disparaît au cours de la décennie suivante. La redistribution après l'immigration s'est faite généralement à petite échelle et a eu des effets non uniformes sur la modification de la concentration des destinations initiales chez les groupes d'immigrants et les cohortes d'arrivée à l'intérieur d'un groupe. Même dans le cas des groupes d'immigrants et de réfugiés dont l'établissement initial a été fortement influencé par les interventions du gouvernement, la redistribution n'a modifié que partiellement la répartition géographique générale. Enfin, l'étude montre que la taille de la collectivité immigrante déjà établie n'est pas un facteur important quant au choix de leur lieu d'établissement par les nouveaux immigrants, lorsque les effets fixes du lieu sont pris en compte.

Book excerpt: By examining newcomers' progress over time, the LSIC affords the possibility of assisting researchers and policy-makers to go beyond existing descriptions of immigrant integration outcomes to an examination of how newcomers achieve these outcomes -- in essence, the "how" and "why" dimensions. While the full value of the survey will be reached when the three waves of data collection are completed, this first wave of data provides important benchmark information. The focus of this publication is on the early settlement experiences of immigrants, from pre-migration to the first six months after arrival. First an overview of the LSIC population is provided, looking at both pre-migration characteristics as well as those at arrival. This is followed by a comprehensive look at the first six months of the settlement process, looking at things such as health, housing and mobility; education and training taken since arrival; employment, income and the general perception of the immigrant's settlement experience. Finally, a more in-depth look at problems and difficulties newcomers experience in four key areas of integration is presented: accessing health services, finding housing, accessing education and training, and finding employment. Challenges to integration are examined in terms of what help was needed, received and from whom, or needed and not received.

In many African countries, these flows are larger than foreign direct investment and portfolio debt and equity flows. In some cases, they are similar in size to official aid from multilateral and bilateral donors. Remittance markets in Africa, however, remain less developed than other regions. The share of informal or unrecorded remittances is among the highest for Sub-Saharan African countries. Remittance costs tend to be significantly higher in Africa both for sending remittances from outside the region and for within-Africa (South-South) remittance corridors. At the same time, the remittance landscape in Africa is rapidly changing with the introduction of new remittance technologies, in particular mobile money transfers and branchless banking. This book presents findings of surveys of remittance service providers conducted in eight Sub-Saharan African countries and in three key destination countries. It looks at issues relating to costs, competition, innovation and regulation, and discusses policy options for leveraging remittances for development in Africa.

Book excerpt: This publication sheds light on the magnitude of domestic work, a sector often "invisible" behind the doors of private households and unprotected by national legislation.The adoption of new international labour standards on domestic work (Convention No. 189 and its accompanying Recommendation No. 201) by the ILO at its 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011 represents a key milestone on the path to the realisation of decent work for domestic workers. This volume presents national statistics and new global and regional estimates on the number of domestic workers. It shows that domestic workers represent a significant share of the labour force worldwide and that domestic work is an important source of wage employment for women, especially in Latin America and Asia. It also examines the extent of inclusion or exclusion of domestic workers from key working conditions laws. In particular, it analyses how many domestic workers are covered by working time provisions, minimum wage legislation and maternity protection. The results demonstrate that under current national laws, substantial gaps in protection still remain. The volume concludes with a summary of the main findings and a reflection on the relevance of the newly adopted international standards to extend legal protection to domestic workers.
