Book European Clocks in the J Paul Getty Museum

Download or read book European Clocks in the J Paul Getty Museum written by Gillian Wilson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the finest examples of European craftsmanship are the clocks produced for the luxury trade in the eighteenth century. The J. Paul Getty Museum is fortunate to have in its decorative arts collection twenty clocks dating from around 1680 to 1798: eighteen produced in France and two in Germany. They demonstrate the extraordinary workmanship that went into both the design and execution of the cases and the intricate movements by which the clocks operated. In this handsome volume, each clock is pictured and discussed in detail, and each movement diagrammed and described. In addition, biographies of the clockmakers and enamelers are included, as are indexes of the names of the makers, previous owners, and locations.

Book Selections from the Decorative Arts in the J Paul Getty Museum

Download or read book Selections from the Decorative Arts in the J Paul Getty Museum written by Gillian Wilson and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1983 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Paul Getty began to collect French decorative arts in the 1930s and continued to do so until his death in 1976. The Museum’s collection has continued to grow since then at a rapid pace and contains over three hundred individual pieces at the time this book is published. This volume illustrates fifty of them. The selection represents a cross section of the collection, which covers the period from approximately 1660 to 1800. In the eighteenth century it became fashionable in Parisian society to decorate the interiors of houses with Far Eastern materials such as lacquer and porcelain. This taste was catered to by the marchands-merciers, members of a guild who combined the functions of the modern interior decorator, the antique dealer, and the picture dealer. These men devised highly ingenious settings for Far Eastern porcelains to adapt their exotic character to the French interiors of the period. Information about them and their clientele has been used in cataloguing the Getty Museum’s collection of mounted oriental porcelain, which is large and of high quality. This book is not a catalogue, nor is it a mere picture book or checklist. Each piece has been chosen because it represents a particular aspect of the crafts involved in the production of objects that were made by Parisian craftsmen for the crown, the nobility, and the rich bourgeoisie. The pieces are arranged in chronological order. Translations of the French archival extracts, an index, and a concise bibliography have been provided.

Book excerpt: A visual celebration of one of the most renowned artists of our time, along with the extraordinary Gallery he helped to create to showcase his work American artist Cy Twombly (1928-2011) created paintings and sculptures that defied conventional classification. In his works, Twombly incorporated a wide variety of elements, from scrawls and calligraphic marks to text from poetry and mythology. Opening in 1995, the Cy Twombly Gallery at the Menil Collection was designed by Renzo Piano and has become a pilgrimage destination for the artist's avid admirers. The product of close collaboration between the Menil, Twombly, and the Dia Center for the Arts, the Gallery is one of the most extraordinary representations of any single 20th-century artist. Twombly chose the art that would be featured and worked closely with the builders to create the most appropriate venue for its presentation. This sumptuous volume showcases thirty-three paintings and eleven sculptures, including an immense 13 x 52-foot painting. Featuring large-scale, close-up details of many of the works, the book looks at paint, plaster, paintings, sculptures, and the "cues" that Twombly gave in his art about this special collection. Published in association with the Twombly Foundation and the Menil Collection

Book B ttger Stoneware

Download or read book B ttger Stoneware written by Dirk Syndram and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red Porcelain, 1709 made ready for production by Johann Friedrich Boettger and universally known as Boettger red stoneware, represented the most elegant ceramics in Europe before experimentation led to rediscovery in Europe of the coveted white hard-paste porcelain, also known as Meissen Porcelain. Finished by the application of sophisticated techniques, Boettger red stoneware soon ranked high in favor with princes, of whom ostentation was expected. Combined with ruby glass, silver, gold and precious stones, it also entered the exalted sphere of the court treasury. Beginning with the universal 'alchemist' Boettger himself, the present publication provides an overview of the ways artisans dealt creatively with this hard material, how models were drawn from goldsmiths' art and what role was played by Boettger red stoneware in the Baroque treasury of Augustus the Strong. Essays reveal that exquisitely finished Boettger stoneware also set trends in court art.
