Download or read book The Modern Procession written by Francis Alÿs and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of Sunday, June 23, 2002, 100 participants gathered at The Museum of Modern Art in midtown Manhattan, along with a 12-person Peruvian brass band, and a horse, dogs, and numerous palanquins, atop which sat replicas of three masterpieces from the museum's collection--Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," Duchamp's ready-made "Bicycle Wheel" and a Giacometti--and a living representative of contemporary art, Kiki Smith. Three hours later they ended their procession at the museum's new temporary home, in Queens. Along the way, which ran from 11 West 53 Street, over the Queensboro Bridge, and up Queens Boulevard, the procession absorbed 100 additional participants, and enacted a very public spectacle--part saint's day procession and part secular celebration--of the museum's historic move to MoMA QNS.

Download or read book Hundred Block Rock written by Bud Osborn and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bud Osborn's point of reference is the street of the disenfranchised – literally, the street corners bordered by Main and Hastings on Vancouver's notorious East Side, known as "Hundred Block Rock"--the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. While this area is well-known for its drug users, criminals, and prostitutes, it is also home to recovering addicts, single mothers, and those whom society has cast aside. As a poet who has known the nightmare of addiction and poverty himself, Bud Osborn sheds light on the unforgiving darkness of Hundred Block Rock, putting faces and names to those who somehow find ways and means to survive there. These poems are direct confessionals that speak valiantly and movingly of the community of the street: from detox centres and the wail of ambulance sirens to the poignant instances of junkies dancing in alleys, or the sound of jazz after midnight. They bring to life the squalid intensity of Hundred Block Rock, while at the same time articulating the redemptive spirit of survival that nurtures and sustains its habitués. Many of the poems in Hundred Block Rock are also featured on a CD available from Festival Distribution.

Download or read book Recollected Work written by Armand Mevis and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing about Dutch graphic design duo Mevis & van Deursen conforms to type. Praised for their innovative but clear presentation, they have designed everything from artist's books for Gabriel Orozco and Rineke Dijkstra to an official government stamp commemorating the marriage of Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, based on the number two, since the wedding date was 02-02-02. This book represents a range of work from the past 15 years, mostly books but also posters and smaller pieces. However, the artists have chosen not simply to present the work again but to make it new through collage and reinterpretative interplay, thus "recycling" their innovative design.
