Book Organic Farming for Sustainable Horticulture

Download or read book Organic Farming for Sustainable Horticulture written by P. Parvatha Reddy and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horticulture is fast emerging as a major commercial venture, because of higher remuneration per unit area and the realization that consumption of fruits and vegetables is essential for health and nutrition. In the last one decade, export potential of horticultural crops has significantly increased attracting even multinationals into floriculture, processing and value added products. Since the horticultural produce especially fruits and vegetables are consumed afresh, consumers expect residue-free produce. In modern society where consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious and envioronmentally aware, a major market for organic foods has developed. The organic sector, in particular, has sprung back into life to become one of the most dynamic sectors in the international food market. The present book is an attempt which comprehensively deals with both principles and practices. It is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the principles of organic farming covering aspects such as enrichment of soil with organic matter, cropping systems, bio-fertilizers, weed management and pest management. The second part of the book deals with package of practice for organic farming in fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, medicinal, aromatic, plantation, spice and tuber crops. Three aspects, namely - nutrient management, weed management and pest management are dealt with separately for each crop. An entire chapter is devoted for sources of critical inputs used for organic farming which would be very much useful to the organic farmers to procure the same. This book is a practical guide to practicing organic farmers of horticulture crops. Further, it is a useful reference to policy makers, research workers and students. The material can also be used for teaching undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

Book Understanding Pathogen Behaviour

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathogens respond dynamically to their environment. Understanding their behaviour is critical both because of evidence of increased resistance to established sanitation and preservation techniques, and because of the increased use of minimal processing technologies which are more vulnerable to the development of resistance. Understanding pathogen behaviour summarises the wealth of recent research and its implications for the food industry. After two introductory chapters on ways of analysing and modelling pathogens, Part one summarises current research on what determines pathogenicity, stress response, adaptation and resistance. Part two reviews the behaviour of particular pathogens, reviewing virulence, stress response and resistance mechanisms in such pathogens as Salmonella, E.coli and Campylobacter. The final part of the book assesses how pathogens react and adapt to particular stresses from heat treatment and the effects of low temperature to the use of disinfectants and sanitisers. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Understanding pathogen behaviour is a standard reference for the food industry in ensuring food safety. Summarises the wealth of recent research in pathogen behaviour Assesses implications for microbiologists and QA staff in the food industry

Book Sustainable Land Use in Deserts

Download or read book Sustainable Land Use in Deserts written by Siegmar-W. Breckle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing desert areas for land use implies a lot of ecological problems. These and related ones are dealt with in this book covering various interdisciplinary and international aspects. Large areas in arid and semi-arid regions are already polluted in various ways. One of the biggest problems is the anthropogenic salinization by inadequate means of agriculture and irrigation. Additionally, most arid areas in the world are dramatically overgrazed. Methods and practices of a sustainable land use in deserts are urgently needed in many arid regions. This book gives a broad survey on some of the affected regions of the world as well as some case studies from elsewhere (Aral Sea, Negev desert, Namib desert etc.). Thus, basic and applied sciences are brought together. Water management in deserts, grazing systems or reclamation of desertified areas are among the topics of this book, as well as social and economic aspects.
