Book excerpt: Erin Brockovich meets Dark Waters in this propulsive and heart-wrenching legal drama set in Appalachian coal country, as one determined lawyer confronts a coal industry giant in a battle over clean drinking water for a West Virginia community--from Wall Street Journal reporter Kris Maher. For two decades, the water in the taps and wells of Mingo County didn't look, smell, or taste right. Could it be the root of the health problems--from kidney stones to cancer--in this Appalachian community? Environmental lawyer Kevin Thompson certainly thought so. For seven years, he waged an epic legal battle against Massey Energy, West Virginia's most powerful coal company, helmed by CEO Don Blankenship. While Massey's lawyers worked out of a gray glass office tower in Charleston known as "the Death Star," Thompson set up shop in a ramshackle hotel in the fading coal town of Williamson. Working with fellow lawyers and a crew of young activists, Thompson would eventually uncover the ruthless shortcuts that put the community's drinking water at risk. A respected preacher and his brother, retired coal miners, and women whose families had lived in the area's coal camps for generations, all put their trust in Thompson when they had nowhere else to turn. As he dug deeper into the mystery of the water along a stretch of road where the violence from the legendary Hatfield-McCoy feud still echoes, he was pulled into the darkest corners of Mingo County, risking his finances, his marriage, his career, and even his safety. Bringing to life a rich cast of characters and the legacy of coal mining in an essential yet often misunderstood part of America, Desperate is a masterful work of investigative reporting about greed and denial, a revealing portrait of a town besieged by hardship and heartbreak, and an inspiring account of one tenacious environmental lawyer's mission to expose the truth and demand justice.

Book The Essence of Desperation

Download or read book The Essence of Desperation written by Bryan Riddle and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counterinsurgency is a doctrine premised on winning the population of a nation-state over to the government’s side. Counterinsurgency is also associated with a continuing presence of military forces for long periods and significant aid expenditures. As such, it is a curious strategy to employ in the midst of wars seen as failing and when the population has turned against the conflict. This book examines counterinsurgency’s emergence in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan in order to understand how it is employed in the midst of these perceived war fighting failures. In doing so, it thinks of strategy as narrative that describes how actions will result in better future effects. In so doing, this book traces the ways in which the strategy making process overcomes fragmentation to produce consensus. It concludes that through the examination of how actors, analogies, and narratives are produced and deployed into strategy debates, the reasons for counterinsurgency’s emergence in crisis periods can be determined. This approach enables a better understanding of the dynamics of policy-making and how geostrategic change occurs.

Book excerpt: Affair-Proof Your Marriage Think it couldn’t happen to you? Most women never make a conscious choice to have an affair, yet it happens to even the most active Christians. How? Why? This book takes a look at the series of seemingly harmless choices that can lead you straight down that dangerous, dead-end path. Desperate House Lies exposes eight common myths, including: he’s just my friend so it’s harmless, and my husband doesn’t understand me; I deserve someone better. Personal stories of women who have slipped in their own marriages and want to help you avoid the same devastation, combined with practical, realistic guidance, will equip you to protect your God-ordained union now and for all time. “We highly recommend that every woman read Desperate House Lies. This book could be a breakthrough for your marriage. We have never read a better book on the topic; we couldn’t put it down!” -Dr. Gary and Barbara Rosberg “This book is a must-read for anyone hearing a deceptive whisper, ‘It’s okay to cross the line.’” -Pam Vredevelt Story Behind the Book An alarming number of Christian women are cheating on their husbands today, having never intended to do so. The consequences of these affairs are ugly and devastating. This book was written to bring a needed voice to a hush-hush topic. Readers will find the initiative to fight mental, emotional, and physical temptation so that their marriages, which are ordained by God, will stand strong and protected. Women will become aware of the subtle progression from friendship to emotional dependency to a forbidden relationship, while also becoming equipped to set up protective boundaries in their lives.

Book excerpt: In this companion volume to her pioneering study Redcoats Against Napoleon, Carole Divall tells the fascinating inside story of a typical infantry regiment during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Rather than focusing on the history of the 30th Regiment of the Line in action and on campaign, she explores its organization, traditions and hierarchy, its personnel, and the ethos that held it together. Using primary source material, in particular surviving regimental records, War Office documents, letters and journals, Divall reconstructs the life of the 30th Foot – and the lives of the men who served in it – during a critical period in Europes military history.
