Book Despatches From Paris Vol 2 of 19

Download or read book Despatches From Paris Vol 2 of 19 written by Oscar Browning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Despatches From Paris, Vol. 2 of 19: 1784-1790 I was unable to write a preface to the first volume of these despatches in consequence of a severe illness. I am now writing only a very scanty preface for a different reason. The conditions for the publication of this series demand that each volume shall not contain more than a certain number of pages, and if the whole of these despatches had been printed without omission, the allotted number of pages would have been exceeded. It, therefore, became necessary to leave out some of the less important documents, and, for a stronger reason, to reduce the preface and the notes to the scantiest dimensions. It is surely more important to give to the public as many of these valuable state papers as possible, than to print any observations which the Editor might have to make upon them. The despatches are, of themselves, of such very high interest and importance, that they are likely to receive much attention, and there is no call for me to point out to the historical scholars, for whose immediate benefit they are published, in what direction their attention should be turned. • Author : Linda S. Frey
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2004-02-28
  • ISBN : 0313017085
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The French Revolution written by Linda S. Frey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-02-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution has often been perceived as the dawn of the modern era, the divide between the ancien régime and the contemporary world. It is an undeniably crucial event in the history of Western Civilization. Yet it is also a confusing and oft-misunderstood event. This comprehensive examination of the Revolution provides students with a narrative historical overview, essays on major aspects of the event, lengthy biographical profiles of key persons, the text of important primary documents contemporary to the time, a timeline, a glossary, and an annotated bibliography of print and electronic sources suitable to students. This is an ideal starting point for students and general readers interested in this fascinating historical period. Marsha and Linda Frey, noted French historians, place the French Revolution in historical and social context for the reader. In addition to a historical overview, other essays explore the deterioration of the ancien régime and the birth of the revolution, the Terror, the culture of the Revolution, Revolution-era diplomacy, and the ambiguous legacy of the Revolution. Biographical portraits range from Louis XVI to Robespierre and from Danton to Lafayette. Primary documents such as the Declaration of the Rights of Man, excerpts from the memoirs of French minister Miot de Melito, and Englishman William Eden's description of Revolutionary France bring to life the political, cultural, and emotional upheaval that was the French Revolution. Illustrations from contemporary sources add a valuable visual component to this all-in-one reference source.

Book Reform and Revolution in France

Download or read book Reform and Revolution in France written by Peter Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-21 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook has been written to help teachers and students to pilot their way through the enormous and ever expanding literature on the French Revolution. The author makes a conscious effort to combine social and political interpretations of the origins of the Revolution and offers a synthesis which takes full account of current debates. He also seeks to restore the Revolution to its domestic environment. Notwithstanding the powerful contemporary myth of rupture, the author argues that the dramatic events of 1789 need to be considered alongside the reform achievements of Bourbon absolute monarchy. The result is a new account of the gestation of the Revolution which is both up-to-date and satisfying in its range of vision.

Book The Origins of the French Revolution

Naturally, the question of its origins remains a key area of controversy. This collection of essays by a team of distinguished experts in the field offers original but approachable views and interpretations that will engage students and scholars alike. Each chapter contains new research and focuses upon a major strand of the present debate. The Origins of the French Revolution explores: - The process of decision-making - the financial crisis - The Paris parlement - Pamphlet literature - The ideas of the Enlightenment - Peasant involvement - The Estates General of 1789 Chapters on art and theatre, on the development of cultural history, and the corrosive role of religious conflict upon the fabric of the monarchy ensure that stimulating new perspectives now form a key part of future discussion. A full introduction considers the nature of the debate and offers a thought-provoking interpretation of the crisis of the absolute monarchy that led to the collapse of state and society in the summer of 1789.
