Readers are taken on a deep and reflective journey through Despair, the protagonist of the novel. A middle-aged man named Despair finds himself at a turning point in his life. A feeling of emptiness and despair overwhelms him, so he sets off on a soul-searching quest to discover meaning and purpose. Despair considers his previous decisions and experiences as he journeys through diverse locations and interacts with diverse people in an attempt to find the answers to life's most important issues. Murray deftly probes the depths of Despair's mind throughout the book, examining the nuances of human emotions and the universal pursuit of happiness. The book engages with a wide range of individuals, all of whom have unique challenges and viewpoints, as the book explores issues of forgiveness, redemption, and the value of interpersonal relationships. Through these interactions, Despair learns the value of empathy and compassion, realizing that true fulfilment comes from lending a hand to others and finding comfort in the experiences of others.

Book excerpt: A solitary passenger alighted from the train, and many people looked curiously after him. The mulatto porter handed to the platform a well-battered portmanteau, which was plastered thickly over with luggage-labels and the advertising tickets of hotels in every quarter of the globe. A great canvas bag followed, ornamented in like fashion. Then from the baggage-van an invisible person tumbled, a canvas bale. The coffee-coloured mulatto held out a grayish-white palm for the quarter-dollar the passenger was ready to drop into it, and stepped back to the platform of the car. The engine bell tolled slowly, as if it sounded a knell, and the train wound away. The curve of the line carried it out of sight in less than a minute, but in the clear mountain air the quickened ringing of the bell, the pant of the engine, and the roll of the wheels were audible for a long time. Then the engine, with a final wail of good-bye, plunged into the tunnel of a distant snow-shed, and the whole region seemed as quiet as a grave.

Book excerpt: Beachy Head is a bit of quintessential England–a seaside promontory where green pastures roll to the edge of chalk cliffs, a place of sheep and wind and ineffable beauty. But it is also a major landmark on the map of self-inflicted death. Since 1965, some five hundred people have ended their lives by jumping or driving or simply walking off the 535-foot cliffs, making Beachy Head one of the most popular suicide spots in the world. And still they come, every week another one or two–the young and the old, the terminally ill and the vigorously healthy, the bereft, the insane, the despairing. Why here? Why so many? One chilly English spring, American writer and teacher Tom Hunt left his home and family and journeyed to this bucolic landscape to find out. In a narrative that seamlessly weaves together personal memoir, history, travelogue, and investigative journalism, Hunt recounts a season of disturbing revelations (including that Princess Diana allegedly came here intending to jump). Still reeling from a suicide in his own family, Hunt arrives in England obsessed with Beachy Head’s grisly mystique, yet utterly unsure of what he would discover. Gradually, with typical English reserve, the people who haunt this extraordinary place release their secrets. Servers in the local tavern–known among residents as the Last Stop Pub–whisper about their encounters with hollow-eyed men and women in their final hours. The celebrated local witch asserts his belief that the place was once used for human sacrifice. The kindly coroner provides access to suicide notes, photographs, and the Sudden Death file. “It’s a very cold solution,” confides a wheelchair-bound ex-hippie who miraculously survived his own jump. In the course of wrenching interviews with bereft family members, watchful taxi drivers, and brave rescue workers, it dawns on Hunt that in each of us is a will to die every bit as tenacious and unyielding as the desire to live–and that Beachy Head stiffens and heightens this death wish. It’s a stage that all but begs to be leapt from. A work of terrible sadness and harrowing revelations, Cliffs of Despair is the account of an unforgettable journey to a place where beauty and death collide.

Book Seven Words for the End of Your Journey

Download or read book Seven Words for the End of Your Journey written by Christian C. Spoor and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest challenge we ever face is how to deal with the end of life. It has been said that most people fear the process of dying more than death itself. Seven Words for the End of Your Journey helps us negotiate this unknown territory. It is a new way of looking at Jesuss seven words of the cross. Through these seven words, we discover how Jesus personally experienced all the challenges people face at the end of life. Many devotional and theological books have been written about the seven words. But few of them have unpacked how these words speak directly to people who are now face-to-face with the end of life. Just as Jesus teaches people how to live well in his Sermon on the Mount, so he teaches how to die well in his seven words from the cross. Out of his own dying experience, Jesus shows the way for others to traverse this difficult terrain and come through victorious. This book is a sensitive, practical guide for patients, their families, and their caregivers.

Book Contradiction of Enlightenment

Download or read book Contradiction of Enlightenment written by Nigel Tubbs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997, this books is an examination of the determination of the concept of enlightenment, and related notions, within modern social relations. The work opens up innovative areas of research into the relationship between philosophy, social relations, and education. It applies Gillian Rose's work on "the broken middle" of Hegelian philosophy to social and educational theorizing. It offers a critique of the idea of enlightenment, and of the identity of the teacher in social theory - Rousseau, Marx and Durkheim - in critical theory - Habermas and Adorno - in "postmodernism" - Foucalt and Nietzsche - and in a variety of educational and pedagogical theories. The book concludes with an original application of Hegelian speculative philosophy to the teacher/student relationship. This work challenges those working in social theory and in education to comprehend the contradictions on their theorising as a shared philosophical consciousness, a shared "broken middle".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Despair to Faith analyzes the spiritual insights and writings of Søren Kierkegaard. Christopher B. Barnett orients readers to Kierkegaard’s grounding in the Christian spiritual tradition and his authorial stress on themes like upbuilding, spiritual journey, and faith. Barnett maintains that Kierkegaard’s spirituality is best understood through the various “pictures” that populate his authorship. These “icons of faith,” represent and communicate what Kierkegaard sees as the fulfillment of Christian existence. Barnett shows how Kierkegaard’s writings serve to illuminate and to deepen one's relationship with the divine.
