Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his death in 1837, Alexander Pushkin—often called the “father of Russian literature”—has become a timeless embodiment of Russian national identity, adopted for diverse ideological purposes and reinvented anew as a cultural icon in each historical era (tsarist, Soviet, and post-Soviet). His elevation to mythic status, however, has led to the celebration of some of his writings and the shunning of others. Throughout the history of Pushkin studies, certain topics, texts, and interpretations have remained officially off-limits in Russia—taboos as prevalent in today’s Russia as ever before. The essays in this bold and authoritative volume use new approaches, overlooked archival materials, and fresh interpretations to investigate aspects of Pushkin’s biography and artistic legacy that have previously been suppressed or neglected. Taken together, the contributors strive to create a more fully realized Pushkin and demonstrate how potent a challenge the unofficial, taboo, alternative Pushkin has proven to be across the centuries for the Russian literary and political establishments.

Book The Masochistic Pleasures of Sentimental Literature

Download or read book The Masochistic Pleasures of Sentimental Literature written by Marianne Noble and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations, critics have noticed in nineteenth-century American women's sentimentality a streak of masochism, but their discussions of it have over-simplified its complex relationship to women's power. Marianne Noble argues that tropes of eroticized domination in sentimental literature must be recognized for what they were: a double-edged sword of both oppression and empowerment. She begins by exploring the cultural forces that came together to create this ideology of desire, particularly Protestant discourses relating suffering to love and middle-class discourses of "true womanhood." She goes on to demonstrate how sentimental literature takes advantage of the expressive power in the convergence of these two discourses to imagine women's romantic desire. Therefore, in sentimental literature, images of eroticized domination are not antithetical to female pleasure but rather can be constitutive of it. The book, however, does not simply celebrate that fact. In readings of Warner's The Wide Wide World, Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Dickinson's sentimental poetry, it addresses the complex benefits and costs of nineteenth-century women's literary masochism. Ultimately it shows how these authors both exploited and were shaped by this discursive practice. The Masochistic Pleasures of Sentimental Literature exemplifies new trends in "Third Wave" feminist scholarship, presenting cultural and historical research informed by clear, lucid discussions of psychoanalytic and literary theory. It demonstrates that contemporary theories of masochism--including those of Deleuze, Bataille, Kristeva, Benjamin, Bersani, Noyes, Mansfield--are more relevant and comprehensible when considered in relation to sentimental literature.

Book Sex Desire and Taboo in South Asia

Download or read book Sex Desire and Taboo in South Asia written by Tulasi Acharya and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, Desire, and Taboo in South Asia: Religion, Culture of Ability, and Patriarchy explores the intersection of religion, culture of ability, and patriarchy in relation to sex, desire, and taboo. Divided into six chapters, this book utilizes Western theorists such as Foucault and Freud in conjunction with Spivak’s theory of the subaltern to establish a theoretical context on sexuality. Through this lens, Acharya evaluates the intersection between religion, patriarchy, and gender and their impact on the perception of sex and desire as a taboo within a South Asian context. The book also examines how individuals contend with their sexual desires, using literature and social media to display the stark difference between the cultural promotion of antisexualism and existing ancient texts on the art of erotica, such as the Kamasutra. In doing so, Sex, Desire, and Taboo in South Asia expands on Eurocentric notions of sexuality and addresses the conditions of the subaltern to explore the complex dynamics of sex in South Asia.

Download or read book Embracing Desire written by Louis Roy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Louis Roy criticizes two different attitudes concerning our desires: either we are wary of our desires because of their potentially negative effects, or we try to satisfy as many of them as we can. Both attitudes focus on desires without examining the issue of desire. The solution is neither to suspect nor to multiply our various desires, but rather to intensify desire. Once desire has intensified, we can accept our desires and identify some of them as priorities for us to fulfill. We will then proceed not only with motivation but also with detachment, and therein lies the key to happiness. Any human being wishes to be granted personal value as a unique individual worthy of respect. And we long to be desired by the person or persons we desire. Moreover, because of our infinitude, we are able to wonder if an infinite being, whom we respect without reserve, can find us desirable. The author explores this basic concern and describes the relationship of mutual desire between Jesus and his first disciples. Thus, this book will appeal to educated readers interested in spirituality, psychology, literature, catechesis, and pastoral ministry.

Book Woman Desired Woman Desiring

Download or read book Woman Desired Woman Desiring written by Daniele Flaumenbaum and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating exploration of sexuality, pleasure and desire. Dr. Flaumenbaum, a gynaecologist and acupuncturist, draws on more than forty years of experience to explain how women today build their sexuality, why pleasure or even desire is so seldom present, and importantly how to remedy it. Her pioneering approach brings together gynaecology, Chinese medicine, psychoanalysis and transgenerational theory.Despite the sexual revolution of the 1970s, the prohibition of sexual pleasure and joy still exists, carried down from previous generations. Dr. Flaumenbaum explores how this plays out, how sexuality is formed, the difference and complementarity between being a mother and a woman and how love and feelings are not enough to switch on the sexual connection. Woman Desired, Woman Desiring provides case studies, covering a breadth of topics from gynaecological ailments to inherited social and cultural burdens.

Book Jeanette Winterson s Narratives of Desire

Download or read book Jeanette Winterson s Narratives of Desire written by Shareena Z. Hamzah-Osbourne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting forward a new theory of fetishism - alternative fetishism - this book provides an up-to-date examination of the work of Jeanette Winterson, offering fresh perspectives and new insights on the topics of gender, sexuality, and identity in her writing. Combining contemporary theories in psychoanalytical and cultural studies, it proposes that a rethinking of fetishism allows Winterson's works to be brought into sharper critical focus by repositioning fetishism as a daily practice in society. In so doing, it argues that Winterson's work challenges orthodox, normative, and contemporary views of fetishism to reveal her own alternative version. Containing the transcript of an email Q&A with Winterson herself and covering the majority of Winterson's oeuvre, from her first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985), up to the most recent, Frankissstein (2019), the book is divided into three main chapters that each discuss a particular theme in Winterson's fiction: bodily fetishism, food fetishism, and sexual fetishism. While the book's focus is on Winterson, the theoretical framework it proposes can be applied to other authors and disciplines in the Arts and Humanities, such as theatre and film, offering new ways of thinking about topics such as fetishism, feminism, psychoanalytical theory, postmodernism, gender, and sexuality.

Book Permitted and Prohibited Desires

Download or read book Permitted and Prohibited Desires written by Anne Allison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative study of gender and sexuality in contemporary Japan investigates elements of Japanese popular culture including erotic comic books, stories of mother-son incest, lunchboxes—or obentos—that mothers ritualistically prepare for schoolchildren, and children's cartoons. Anne Allison brings recent feminist psychoanalytic and Marxist theory to bear on representations of sexuality, motherhood, and gender in these and other aspects of Japanese culture. Based on five years of fieldwork in a middle-class Tokyo neighborhood, this theoretically informed, accessible ethnographic study provides a provocative analysis of how sexuality, dominance, and desire are reproduced and enacted in late-capitalistic Japan.

Book A Thematic Exploration of Twentieth Century Western Literature

Download or read book A Thematic Exploration of Twentieth Century Western Literature written by Jiang Chengyong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century witnessed dramatic changes in terms of the structure of society, economics, politics, science, and technology, driving a change in Western literature from traditional to modern: old value systems were shattered; writing approaches and aesthetics changed; writers began to explore the psychological world and expand the discussion of humankind and modern civilization. This title takes classic literature by European and American authors of the twentieth century as research objects in order to comprehensively explore their thoughts, values, aesthetics, and narratives. Six major themes are used as units for analysis—existential meaning, self-identity, war and human nature, growing confusion, love and marriage, and anti-utopia. The authors argue that the six themes extend the themes of traditional literature and epitomize the unique characteristics of twentieth-century Western literature. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of literature, especially Western literature and twentieth-century literature.
