Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. Eroticism tinged with elegy, gratitude knit with doubt; MEET ME HERE AT DAWN contains an unmistakably open voice. Sophie Klahr's debut poetry collection careens from hunger to hunger. With lyric energy and narrative determination, the poems are missives sent back from a threshold, chronicling disease, the unspoken pains of family, the fabric of an extra-marital affair. "What aperture makes a woman?" Klahr asks in "One Slaughter." In MEET ME HERE AT DAWN, even the unanswerable is unfaltering, every question brightly wrought and necessary. "Sophie Klahr moves through the chambers of the mind and heart like an expert escape artist, keys hidden in the body's coverts are revealed in a 'rush of knowing, ' the body's 'first breaking and entering' that feels both clandestine and disclosive. This is poetry of immense vulnerability and fierce mettle; determined, convincing and heroically alive with courage of every kind."--D.A. Powell

  • Pages : 2 pages

Download or read book A Dream Within a Dream written by Edgar Allan Poe and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An example of Poe’s melancholic and morbid poetic pieces, "A Dream Within a Dream" is a poem that pitifully mourns the passing of time. The poet’s own life, teeming with depression, alcoholism, and misery, cannot but exemplify the subject matter and tone of the poem. The constant dilution of reality and fantasy is detrimental to the poetic speaker’s ability to hold reality in his hands. The quiet contemplation of the speaker is contrasted with thunderous passing of time that waits for no man. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, author, and literary critic. Most famous for his poetry, short stories, and tales of the supernatural, mysterious, and macabre, he is also regarded as the inventor of the detective genre and a contributor to the emergence of science fiction, dark romanticism, and weird fiction. His most famous works include "The Raven" (1945), "The Black Cat" (1943), and "The Gold-Bug" (1843).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2021 PULITZER PRIZE IN POETRY FINALIST FOR THE 2020 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR POETRY Natalie Diaz’s highly anticipated follow-up to When My Brother Was an Aztec, winner of an American Book Award Postcolonial Love Poem is an anthem of desire against erasure. Natalie Diaz’s brilliant second collection demands that every body carried in its pages—bodies of language, land, rivers, suffering brothers, enemies, and lovers—be touched and held as beloveds. Through these poems, the wounds inflicted by America onto an indigenous people are allowed to bloom pleasure and tenderness: “Let me call my anxiety, desire, then. / Let me call it, a garden.” In this new lyrical landscape, the bodies of indigenous, Latinx, black, and brown women are simultaneously the body politic and the body ecstatic. In claiming this autonomy of desire, language is pushed to its dark edges, the astonishing dunefields and forests where pleasure and love are both grief and joy, violence and sensuality. Diaz defies the conditions from which she writes, a nation whose creation predicated the diminishment and ultimate erasure of bodies like hers and the people she loves: “I am doing my best to not become a museum / of myself. I am doing my best to breathe in and out. // I am begging: Let me be lonely but not invisible.” Postcolonial Love Poem unravels notions of American goodness and creates something more powerful than hope—in it, a future is built, future being a matrix of the choices we make now, and in these poems, Diaz chooses love.

Download or read book Solve for Desire written by Caitlin Bailey and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A debut poetry collection exploring the real lives of siblings Georg and Grete Trakl while addressing themes of desire, addiction, loss, and absence. Georg Trakl is one of the most celebrated poets of the early twentieth century. Less is known about his sister, Grete: also gifted, also addicted to drugs, and dead by her own hand three years after Georg’s overdose. But in Solve for Desire—selected by Srikanth Reddy as the winner of the 2017 Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry—Caitlin Bailey summons Grete from the shadows. At once sensual and acidic, obsessive and bereft, the Grete of these poems is a fairy-tale sister leaving “missives dropped around the city, crumbs / for your ghost.” Can one person be addicted to another? Can two souls be twinned, and where does that leave the physical? How do we solve for desire when the object we adore disappears—and how does the poet solve and resolve the past, its wounds and its absences? “Each time I write your name,” Bailey writes, “a key / turns somewhere in a lock.” Like the “perfect red burst” of poppies and of blood, these poems are a blooming, keening exploration of desire between brother and sister, poet and subject, the living and the dead. Praise for Solve for Desire “The work of a poet who sings, boldly, across the distances between us.” —Srikanth Reddy “A sobering look at desire, addiction, loss, and absence in this debut collection of short, lyric poems that are by turns lush and understated, lofty and plainspoken. . . . She performs a kind of feminist resuscitation of the lesser-known Grete, focusing on small moments of quiet, grief, lust, and memory, and fleshing out a story that is still disputed” —Publishers Weekly “This precarious, satisfyingly disjointed debut collection of poetry captures the spirit of the [Trakl] siblings. . . . Bailey’s brilliantine lyrics shine brightest when the siblings’ characters are wrought in full relief.” —Booklist

Book 13th Life of Desire

Download or read book 13th Life of Desire written by David Dulla Mwidadi and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-12 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 13th Life of Desire; with the subtitle: Putting under Control all Desires; tends to showcase the rebirth of thirteen lines from the first three lines of desire in our daily life, for example: I once loved, and I smiled, then I missed. He is perfect, she is sweet. These are just few words of a single breath of our desire in life: in high school, college, home and work place. The rest thirteen lines will follow and flow like a river. Probably the next line will be: I long to kiss and be kissed. Desire and fear are the two most powerful emotion in which most life in the world is propelled. There is something we desire, that is why we admired and loved; there is something we fear, that is why we doubted and hesitated. We desire, but we are afraid and uncertain of how we can acquire our wanting. Life desires in a poetic expression is the most noble and true expression in the human language. It is not fiction, it is fact in the sense that I do not decide to write a poem, but i find myself writing; just like dreaming, i do not decide to dream, i just find myself in the dream dreaming. And that is why i have dream poems and a well outlined at the end of my book is a thesis: Why do we dream? Dream desires are also part of my life poetry and our daily desires. The only difference is that i write them in moment of dreaming while i am awake; and the former, I write down upon waking from the dream, though they will be just fragments of dreams. Inspiration is the mother of desire and nature is its source. People are part of nature and form part of desire and inspiration. We appreciate beauty and the loveliness of things that capture our hearts and eyes, igniting the urge to: experience, possess and live it. It''s the sublime moment of life or feeling alive. What makes us feel alive is what we desire and therefore we live to want it. But the main issue is... are we satisfied? And if not, can we control our desires? From our perception to our imagination, from our sight to our touch, from our feelings to our needs, the 13th Life of Desire tends to showcase the rebirth of next thirteen lines of desire from the first three lines of inspiration. Inspiration is limited, i mean, brief, but desire is unlimited, you will always desire, always want, you will always need. What a pity for humanity! And as i laugh on my last line, i know, for i have lived and written on it; forming the 13th life of desire. How restless our hearts are in relation to life needs, make me wonder why, and the WHY made me write. Scriptures give us comfort and hope to keep on going, poetry gives us life reality and makes us smile, saying, i was once there, i know, i feel it. Emotions can blot out reason, and poetry requires wisdom, that is, organized life, words and thoughts; how things real are, how we understand them and live with them. After all, desire is necessary, it propels us to work hard, think, and be creative. But, it can also make us envy, corrupt, steal and kill. It''s both side of the coin. You can use it to buy goods or use the same coin (money) to corrupt. It''s just the way someone may interpret a scripture; the love of money is the root of all evil, but someone somewhere might think...well, the love of money is its root for most goods and happiness. You see. So desire is like a coin, it is just how we see it. At the end of the day, the size of your success depends on the depth of your desire. The late South African president, Nelson Mandela once said "If you speak to a man in a language he understands, it goes to his mind, but if you speak in his language it goes to his heart." And in the thirteenth life of desire I speak in our most secret human language of desire, in prose form and rhyme. The problem with desire is that we would do anything to experience, acquire and satisfy it. Our life is full of desires; our body is a lamb of avarice. But the main question is: How do we control our desire driven life? Desire is not a sin, but anxiety is an inward sin.
