Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Designs for Small Dynamos and Motors Most of the chapters of this book originally formed articles written for the American Electrician, and many of them were published in the book entitled "Electrical Designs." Chapters X to XVIII inclusive, however, have not previously appeared in book form, and all of the direct-current designs herein described have been revised in accordance with the changes in the practice of dynamo and motor design which have occurred since their first publication. The majority of the designs were prepared with a view of reducing to the simplest degree the facilities necessary for the construction of the machines, rather than to secure the most graceful outlines or best efficiency. Chapters XIX to XXII inclusive describe designs by Mr. J. C. Brocksmith which were previously described in issues of the American Electrician that are now out of print. These were also reprinted in "Electrical Designs," which is superseded by the present book and three others now in press. The other volumes are devoted, one to electrical instruments, telephones and similar light constructions, another to heavier electrical apparatus other than dynamos and stationary motors, and the third to gas engines and other machinery not involving electrical construction. These volumes will contain all of the material that appeared in "Electrical Designs," excepting that contained by the present book, together with much additional matter not heretofore printed in book form. Book Dynamos and Dynamo Design

Download or read book Dynamos and Dynamo Design written by International Correspondence Schools and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamos and Dynamo Design: Direct Current Motors; Alternating Currents; Alternators; Alternating-Current Apparatus This volume contains an exceptionally clear and complete treatment of the design of direct-current dynamos and motors, together with a detailed discussion of the theory of alternating currents and descriptions of modern alternating current machinery. In presenting the subject of design, a full discussion of the parts of the machines is first taken up, followed by complete demonstrations of design problems. The subject of armature windings receives special attention. Numerous winding diagrams are provided, indicating clearly the relative positions of the coils, pole pieces, and commu tator bars. The text accords with the best modern practice. The theory of the action of motors, their connections and the many systems of speed control are set forth in a clear and comprehensive manner. The importance of a knowl edge of alternating currents in the electrical-engineering profession is steadily growing. Illustrations and the graphical methods of treatment have been freely used. The method of numbering the pages, cuts, articles, etc. Is such that each subject or part, when the subject is divided into two or more parts, is complete in itself; hence, in order to make the index intelligible, it was necessary to give each subject or part a number. This number is placed at the top of each page, on the headline, Opposite the page number; and to distinguish it from the page number it is preceded by the printer's section mark Consequently, a reference such as 16, page 26, will be readily found by looking along the inside edges of the headlines until 16 is found, and then through 16 until page 26 is found. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamos and Electric Motors and All About Them Practically a dynamo or an electric motor, electrically consists of three parts, the field, the armature and the commutator. The field consists of magnets, which are iron cores solidly connected with an iron frame. Upon the magnets are wound layers of insulated wire. These magnets are called electro-magnets, as they become magnetic only when there is an electric current passing through their coils. The armature may consist of a soft iron core mounted upon a shaft which revolves within the fields or it may be a stationary part around which the fields revolve. To the soft iron core of the armature a number of insulated copper wires are affixed with their ends connected to the segments of the commutator. Book How to Build Dynamo Electric Machinery

Download or read book How to Build Dynamo Electric Machinery written by Edward Trevert and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprinted from the 1902 edition, this book provides a wonderful insight into Victorian-era electrical machinery. To quote the author?s original preface from the 1894 edition:?Almost the first piece of electrical apparatus the student wishes to construct is the dynamo, in fact it is important that he should be familiar with this machine at the beginning of his studies in electricity. It is the purpose of this book to give practical directions for building small dynamos and motors, and these directions are accompanied with working drawings which will enable to reader to understand the text more clearly. The machines described have been carefully selected both for efficiency and beauty of form. They are easy to build, the design of castings being for as few pieces as possible.?This book is intended as a practical treatise, and in no way is it to be considered technical. Some theory, however, is given to help the reader in a general way. The chapters on commercial dynamos and motors are added to show the general construction of large machines. The chapter on management, and the one containing useful tables, the author hopes will add to the value of the book. No foreign dynamos or motors have been described, owing to the fact that there is sufficient material for description in American machines to answer every purpose of this work.?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamo: Its Theory, Design, and Manufacture IN writing the present book it has been the endeavour of the authors to furnish to students a simple, yet accurate, account of the theory and design of the modern dynamo. That the attain ment of this aim is no light task we are only too well aware. Such a book, if it is to be of use to those who are either engaged or about to engage in electrical engineering as a pro fession, must combine both the theoretical and practical sides if it is not to repel the general scientific reader, it must be free from excessive technicality; while, lastly, it should not be too mathematical, since it is intended for the learner, who with a general knowledge of electricity comes to the special study of dynamos. Most of all, however, is it important that, so far as it goes, its statements should be entirely accurate. If, therefore, we have attained something of the all-saving merit of accuracy, many defects on other scores may be forgiven, and our attempt to write a new book on so well-worn a theme cannot be pronounced to have been entirely vain. A completely novel treatment of the subject must be either erroneous or well-nigh impossible to devise: any writer on dynamos must necessarily draw from the same fountain-sources, such as the papers of Hopkinson, Kapp, Swinburne, and Essen, and even the best method of presenting much of this accumulated knowledge may have been worked out by some previous author. To such well-known writings we have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Specification and Design of Dynamo Electric Machinery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Specification and Design of Dynamo Electric Machinery Classic Reprint written by Miles Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specification and Design of Dynamo-Electric Machinery But a book of precedents alone would be incomplete unless it showed how the specifications might be fulfilled in the factory; and the author therefore proposed to add to each specification a worked-out design, showing at least one method of meeting the prescribed conditions. In order to do this, it has been necessary to give in the first part of the book a collection of simple rules for calculating the dimensions and quantities met with in dynamo-electrical machinery. The general method of design is that employed by many of the engineers of the Westinghouse Companies of America and Great Britain, who learnt it from Mr. B. G. Lamme. The advantages of the method are set out on pages 7 and 8. Many additions and refinements have been made by various users, so that the rules given are very much more complicated than in the original scheme; but the beauty of the method is that these refinements can be used or not, according as the time available for the work is long or short. Most commonly a calculation sheet, instead of being filled up like those given in the text, contains only a dozen figures or so, which represent the design sufficiently well for the purpose of quoting a price. Download or read book Original Papers on Commercial Dynamo Design Classic Reprint written by William L. Waters and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Original Papers on Commercial Dynamo Design Commercial Engineering. - The nineteenth century was notable for the achievements of the engineer, and there is little doubt that the men responsible for this pioneer work were engineers in the broadest sense of the word. They were engineers in their ability to manipulate the forces and materials of nature; but they were also far-sighted and level-headed men of affairs in their appreciation of the economic value of their work, and in the management of their projects. These men, by their genius and enterprise, and by their hard common sense and solid achievement, forced the world to recognize the engineer as destined to play a leading part in the future. Public attention became focussed on the engineer, and numbers of men were attracted to the profession, either through natural inclination or through hope of profit. But as was to be expected, a large percentage of these men were imperfectly educated, and possessed only a specialized talent in certain directions, without any of the broadminded comprehensive spirit of the pioneers. This change soon reacted on public opinion, and the engineer lost his high standing; so that the public and the world of commerce came to regard him as a specialized crank, a species of high-grade artisan, who though useful enough in his place, was devoid of any ability to take a sane and comprehensive view of a situation, or to manage an undertaking in which he might be interested. Book Dynamo Lighting for Motor Cars Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dynamo Lighting for Motor Cars Classic Reprint written by M. A. Codd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamo Lighting for Motor Cars The Dynam0. - Considering firstly the dynamo. This consists of five essential parts: (a) the armature, a rotating cylindrical magnet wound round with wire in which the current is generated (e) the commutator, which is suitably connected to the armature windings and rotates with them (c) the brushes, which press on the commutator and collect the current from it, passing it out to the necessary wires of the system; the field magnet, which may be either a permanent or an electro-magnet or a combination of both, its function being to give a strong magnetic field for the arma ture to rotate in; (e) the bearings and other purely mechanical details of the machine. It should be remembered that the output of the machine depends: (i) roughly on the strength of the field; (2) on the speed with which the armature rotates; and (3) on the number of turns of wire upon the armature, although there are other factors which limit the output, such as heating, dimensions, and efficiency. Choice of Machine - In choosing a dynamo it is well to ascertain beyond the usual facts of design, output, and weight that the bearings and commutator are generously proportioned, as these are the two weak points of lighting dynamos owing to the restricted space at the disposal of the designer. A machine should also be chosen in preference which gives its maximum working output at a low speed, and also the speed which the dynamo cuts in, or begins to generate effectively, should receive attention. Book The Dynamo

Download or read book The Dynamo written by S. R. Bottone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamo: How Made and How Used The interest awakened in machines for the generation of current electricity, consequent upon the demand for electric lighting and transmission of power, has induced many amateurs to turn their energies to the construction of small dynamos, such as might replace a battery of eight or ten cells, without the disagreeable concomitants of changing acids, cleaning plates, etc., provided such dynamos could be afterwards worked without the employ ment of power. Such efforts have not generally met with success, owing to the fact that no work of a practical nature has yet appeared in which the construction of the dynamo is fully explained. When the principles which control the manufacture of such machines are understood, dynamos can be constructed with as much ease and certainty as induction coils; and in the following pages these principles will be elucidated sufficient] y to enable the amateur to carry out his work in an intelligent manner.
