Book Designing visualization and interaction for industrial control rooms of the future

Download or read book Designing visualization and interaction for industrial control rooms of the future written by Veronika Domova and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades, the industry has been undergoing extensive digitization leading to complex ensembles of humans, machines, autonomous agents, and sensors. With this new setup comes the challenge of how to appropriately support work-practices of industrial operators who now need to monitor and control complex industrial processes through remote interfaces. Information overflow and restrictive interfaces are two significant problems that operators face in their daily routines. In this PhD, I explore approaches to visualization and interaction that would reduce industrial operators' information load and enable them to perform their duties in an efficient, reliable, and safe manner. Industrial users and industrial settings are the starting points of my research. In this thesis, I describe multiple examples of custom-tailored data visualizations that reduce the operator's visual load by consolidating large amounts of data into compact overview displays with often nontrivial data presentation. With respect to interaction, I propose several tangible and tactile interfaces, as well as concepts for natural interaction, that let the user freely interact with the control station and the information it depicts. Finally, I propose several concepts of adaptive systems that adjust to the operator's context to ensure their high situational awareness and convenience of interaction. Even though this thesis is primarily intended for the community of interaction designers, I expect it to be of interest to a broader audience due to its relation to the user experience field. To a certain extent, everyone can resonate with the user's problems because, in our everyday life, we all are users of some technology and services. Furthermore, for a lay reader, this work can be seen as a comprehensive introduction to how the industry works and what role the human plays there.

Book Cooperative Design Visualization and Engineering

Download or read book Cooperative Design Visualization and Engineering written by Yuhua Luo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the complexity of design, visualization and engineering increases rapidly, single-user's e?ort is no longer enough to accomplishever-growingrequirements. Group e?ort becomes essential. There are many industrial areas that demand strong CDVE support such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, architecture design, engineering and building construction (AEC), etc. There are numerousother application areaswhere cooperativeand concurrent working is becoming popular, such as entertainment program development, networked gaming, simulation, collaborative learning, etc. Successful cooperative design, visualization and engineering highly depend on the advances in fundamental research areas such as concurrent proce- ing, middleware, agent-based methods, design patterns, distributed systems, databases, transport protocols in network communication, human machine - teraction, group behavior ..., just to name a few. There is a very tight re- tionship between cooperative design, visualization and engineering. Cooperative design will become impossible without cooperative visualization while coop- ative engineering processes would not be complete without cooperative design and visualization. From my research experience in the?eld since 1996 in the Spanish National R & D Project CICYT TEL 96-0544, 3D Cooperative Design System (Sistemas Cooperativos de Diseo en 3D), up to the European Esprit (IST) Project No.

Book Industrial Control Systems Security and Resiliency

Download or read book Industrial Control Systems Security and Resiliency written by Craig Rieger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the key concerns as well as research challenges in designing secure and resilient Industrial Control Systems (ICS). It will discuss today's state of the art security architectures and couple it with near and long term research needs that compare to the baseline. It will also establish all discussions to generic reference architecture for ICS that reflects and protects high consequence scenarios. Significant strides have been made in making industrial control systems secure. However, increasing connectivity of ICS systems with commodity IT devices and significant human interaction of ICS systems during its operation regularly introduces newer threats to these systems resulting in ICS security defenses always playing catch-up. There is an emerging consensus that it is very important for ICS missions to survive cyber-attacks as well as failures and continue to maintain a certain level and quality of service. Such resilient ICS design requires one to be proactive in understanding and reasoning about evolving threats to ICS components, their potential effects on the ICS mission’s survivability goals, and identify ways to design secure resilient ICS systems. This book targets primarily educators and researchers working in the area of ICS and Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems security and resiliency. Practitioners responsible for security deployment, management and governance in ICS and SCADA systems would also find this book useful. Graduate students will find this book to be a good starting point for research in this area and a reference source.

Book Human Technology Interaction

Download or read book Human Technology Interaction written by Carsten Röcker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digitalization and automation are leading to fundamental changes in the industrial landscape. In the German-speaking countries, this development is often summarized under the term Industry 4.0. Simultaneously, interaction technologies have made huge developments in the last decades. The use of mobile devices and touch screens is ubiquitous, augmented and virtual reality technologies have made their way into the market and new interaction concepts have become established. While new interaction technologies offer new possibilities for organizing or executing work in the context of Industry 4.0, the transformation of industrial processes also creates a need for new work practices. This book sheds light on the interplay of Industry 4.0 and new interaction technologies. It presents selected research articles on the topic of Human-Technology Interaction in the context of Industry 4.0. Researchers from various disciplines present the current state of research with regard to future interactions with production environments to develop a common vision of how to design future interactions in the industrial domain. In this context, various topics are covered: a detailed overview on assistive systems for supporting manual work is given, including technological and design aspects as well as implementation strategies. Industrial use-cases for extended reality (XR) technologies such as augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) are presented, also covering aspects of how to author content in XR environments. The role of new work practices is examined, for example, by presenting concepts of gamification and human-machine teamwork for supporting well-being. Finally, topics of trust and technology acceptance are discussed in the context of Industry 4.0. Given this broad perspective, a vision is sketched of how to design future human-technology interactions in a way that realizes their full technical and human potential.

Book Human Computer Interaction Symposium

Download or read book Human Computer Interaction Symposium written by Fabio Paternò and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-07-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IFIP World Computer Congress (WCC) is one of the most important conferences in the area of computer science and a number of related Human and Social Science disciplines at the worldwide level and it has a federated structure, which takes into account the rapidly growing and expanding interests in this area. Human-Computer Interaction is now a mature and still dynamically evolving part of this area, which is represented in IFIP by the Technical Committee 13 on HCI. We are convinced that in this edition of WCC, which takes place for the first time in Italy, it will be interesting and useful to have a Symposium on Human- Computer Interaction in order to present and discuss a number of contributions in this field. There has been increasing awareness among designers of interactive systems of the importance of designing for usability, but we are still far from having products that are really usable, and usability can mean different things depending on the application domain. We are all aware that too many users of current technology feel often frustrated because computer systems are not compatible with their abilities and needs with existing work practices. As designers of tomorrow technology, we have the responsibility of creating computer artefacts that would permit better user experience with the various computing devices, so that users may enjoy more satisfying experiences with information and communications technologies.
