Book excerpt: Biological systems have evolved elaborate mechanisms of conserving energy through substrate level phosphorylation and the electron transport chain. A recently uncovered cellular mechanism of energy conservation is electron bifurcation. Electron bifurcation fundamentally involves a two electron transfer reactions where the two electrons are spatially separated down two inequivalent thermodynamic pathways, with one being endergonic and the other exergonic, while remaining an exergonic process. To investigate the reaction conditions required to bifurcate electrons, inorganic models capable of coordinating to a bifurcating site and accepting electrons are explored. Computational experiments served as a guide in selecting a Lewis acidic main group central atom for the complex. Redox-active ligands capable of donating and accepting electrons were utilized to serve as the terminal electron acceptor for the coordination complexes. Inorganic metallocenes and the fluorescent dye molecule 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) are ideal redox-active molecules because of their electron accepting activity and were integrated into a ligand framework to generate a redox-active ligand suitable for coordination about the central atom. This work focuses on two indium based central atom molecules with metallocene ligands and BODIPY diamine ligands. During characterization, the electrochemistry was explored and the indium BODIPY compound showed potential to be useful as a model complex for the biological systems in question.

Book excerpt: This work investigated two different approaches to optimize biological sulphate reduction in order to develop a process control strategy to optimize the input of an electron donor and to study how to increase the feasibility of using a cheap carbon source. Feast/famine regimes, applied to design the control strategy, were shown to induce the accumulation of storage compounds in the sulphate reducing biomass. This study showed that delays in the response time and a high control gain can be considered as the most critical factors affecting a sulphide control strategy in bioreactors. The delays are caused by the induction of different metabolic pathways in the anaerobic sludge, including the accumulation of storage products. On this basis, a mathematical model was developed and validated. This can be used to develop optimal control strategies. In order to understand the microbial pathways in the anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled to sulphate reduction (AOM-SR), diverse potential electron donors and acceptors were added to in vitro incubations of an AOM-SR enrichment at high pressure. Acetate was formed in the control group, probably resulting from the reduction of CO2. These results support the hypothesis that acetate may serve as an intermediate in the AOM-SR process.

For a long time, they were covered by two terms: van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. Both experimental and quantum chemical studies have contributed to our understanding of the nature of these interactions. In the last decade, great progress has been made in identifying, quantifying, and visualizing noncovalent interactions. New types of interactions have been classified—their energetic and spatial properties have been tabulated. In the past, most studies were limited to analyzing the single strongest interaction in the molecular system under consideration, which is responsible for the most important structural properties of the system. Despite this limitation, such an approach often results in satisfactory approximations of experimental data. However, this requires knowledge of the structure of the molecular system and the absence of other competing interactions. The current challenge is to go beyond this limitation. This Special Issue collects ideas on how to study the interplay of noncovalent interactions in complex molecular systems including the effects of cooperation and anti-cooperation, solvation, reaction field, steric hindrance, intermolecular dynamics, and other weak but numerous impacts on molecular conformation, chemical reactivity, and condensed matter structure.
