The technical stimulation for this was the spread of personal computers and computer networks, whilst the social driver was the demand for the support of everyday work, frequently including group work and teamwork. This field of research has become known as Computer-Supported Cooperative Work whilst the systems to support group work are called groupware. Over the two decades, research has been extensively conducted. Various Web-based systems have been researched, some of which are aimed at the support of communication and collaboration. Mobile phones have spread rapidly and communication and collaboration support systems have also been researched on this platform. There are many other technologies such as virtual reality, robotics, multimedia, and ubiquitous computing, each of which provides opportunities for the research field. As the research field is not dependent on the type of technology, but is dependent on the needs of human activity and human beings are social animals, the technical demands of supporting social activities do not diminish.Technologies that potentially are useful for this purpose are being investigated whilst new technologies are invented. As a result of the development of IT, the research and development of communication and collaboration systems is increasingly active. The scope of this publication extends from perspectives, design principles, guidelines, and social aspects of communication and collaboration support systems to the various application systems and the platform technologies.

Contribuições teóricas revelam e estudos empíricosevidenciam e ilustram que SiCos influenciam o desdobramento da comunicação mediada entre os usuários (comunicação USU), as experiências que eles terão ao utilizar o sistema e, em última instância, a atividade social mais ampla que estásendo apoiada, bem como a história do grupo. Diante do impacto, especialmente social, que tecnologias desta natureza podem alcançar, torna-se necessário apoiardesigners de SiCos, de forma a que suas decisões sejam as mais informadas possíveis. Neste trabalho, apresentamos a Manas, uma ferramenta epistêmica fundamentada na Engenharia Semiótica que permite ao designer representar seu projeto da comunicação USU, e que lhe oferece feedback qualitativo sobre possíveis efeitos sociais do seu projeto na interação dos usuários com o sistema e principalmente com outros usuários. Ao fazer isto, a Manas leva o designer a refletir tanto sobre o problema que está sendo tratado quanto sobre sua solução, permitindo-lhe tomar decisões mais conscientes. Ademais, a Manas registra a lógica do projeto da comunicação USU (design rationale). Além de ser umavaliosa fonte de informação e reflexão sobre o processo de design e o produto deste processo, o registro da lógica do projeto da comunicação mediada entre os usuários cria condições favoráveis à transmissão deste conhecimento aos usuários através da interface do SiCo. De posse deste conhecimento, os usuários poderão usar o sistema eficientemente. A Manas, portanto, tem o potencial de aumentar a qualidade de SiCos.

Two opposite methodological approaches to co-operative system design can be clearly identified - a pragmatic approach or an approach based on theories and models. Objectives of the COOP'2000 Conference included: clarifying the reasons why one needs or does not need to use a theory or a model for design, comparing the pragmatic and the theory/model-based approaches, and identifying possible joint points between them, discussing the relevance of the theories/models with respect to the design of co-operative systems, to better delimit the respective application fields of the various theories/models, and to identify their possible joint points.
