Book Design Test and Evaluation of Three Active Flutter Suppression Controllers

Download or read book Design Test and Evaluation of Three Active Flutter Suppression Controllers written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three control law design techniques for flutter suppression are presented. Each technique uses multiple control surfaces and/or sensors. The first method uses traditional tools (such as pole/zero loci and Nyquist diagrams) for producing a controller that has minimal complexity and which is sufficiently robust to handle plant uncertainty. The second procedure uses linear combinations of several accelerometer signals and dynamic compensation to synthesize the model rate of the critical mode for feedback to the distributed control surfaces. The third technique starts with a minimum-energy linear quadratic Gaussian controller, iteratively modifies intensity matrices corresponding to input and output noise, and applies controller order reduction to achieve a low-order, robust controller. The resulting designs were implemented digitally and tested subsonically on the active flexible wing wind-tunnel model in the Langley Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. Only the traditional pole/zero loci design was sufficiently robust to errors in the nominal plant to successfully suppress flutter during the test. The traditional pole/zero loci design provided simultaneous suppression of symmetric and antisymmetric flutter with a 24-percent increase in attainable dynamic pressure. Posttest analyses are shown which illustrate the problems encountered with the other laws. Book Active Flutter Suppression Systems for Military Aircraft A Feasibility Study

Download or read book Active Flutter Suppression Systems for Military Aircraft A Feasibility Study written by William E. Triplett and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analytical study of active flutter suppression systems for military aircraft was directed toward the accomplishment of two broad objectives: (1) Establish flutter modes, configurations, and flight conditions where active flutter control can show an advantage; (2) Formulate design guidelines and criteria to implement and test active flutter suppression systems. To accomplish these broad objectives the study effort was divided into the three separate investigations: (1) Wing/store flutter control study - to assess the practicality of extension of flutter boundaries for several store combinations; (2) All-movable horizontal tail flutter control study - to investigate both the potential payoff in future aircraft and the unique problems and difficulties when one of the participants in the flutter mechanism is used as the flutter control force producer; (3) Wing flutter control study - to parametrically evaluate the potential payoff in future aircraft by active flutter control of flutter critical primary lifting surfaces.
