Book excerpt: Throughout the history of materials science and physics, few topics have captured as much interest as the phenomenon of superconductivity (SPC), discovered in 1911. Perhaps this is because of the intriguing interpretation of the phenomenon, which remains controversial, or for the secret hope of being able to synthesize a material with a critical superconductive transition temperature (TC) high enough to revolutionize the sector of energy generation and transport. As a matter of fact, the search for new superconductor materials has motivated an army of scientists, in particular, after the discovery of high-TC superconductor cuprates (HTS) in the mid-80s. Besides the unremitting interest in HTS, new materials, such as intermetallic borides, iron-nickel-based superconductors, heavy fermion, and organic and superhydride systems, are still delivering outstanding achievements to the scientific community, among which includes thousands of papers and a handful of Nobel prize winners). This Special Issue "Synthesis and Characterization of New Superconductor Materials" is a collection of scientific contributions providing new insights and advances in this fascinating field, addressing issues ranging from the fundamental research (theory and correlation between critical temperature, TC, and structural properties) to the development of innovative solutions for practical applications of superconductivity: Synthesis of new superconducting materials Magnetic and/or electric characterization of the TC transition Role of crystal symmetry and chemical substitutions on TC TC dependence on external stimuli and/or non-ambient conditions Theoretical modeling

Book excerpt: The principal objectives of this work were the design, synthesis, and preliminary characterization of new organic conductors and superconductors. Electrocrystallization facilities were constructed that accommodate 96 crystal growth cells. Crystal formation takes place in a temperature-controlled (plus or minus 0.1 C). vibrationally-isolated, (vertical isolation efficiency at 10 Hz in 60-90%), inert-atmosphere environment. A variety of radical-cation salts of bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene were grown and characterized by crystallography, tight-binding band calculations, electronic transport, magnetic properties, and a number of other solid-state methods. Significant findings include the discovery of a tetrachlorogallate salt that is a superconductor with a transition temperature 5.5 deg higher than any previously known organic material containing selenium and magnetoresistance studies on mercury thiocyanate salts that suggest that strong electron-electron interactions are important in promoting and enhancing superconductivity in organic superconductors. A new organic conductor precursor, bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathionaphthalene, was synthesized and several of its conducting salts were investigated in a preliminary manner. Numerous collaborative studies were undertaken.

Book excerpt: The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity [1986] by Bendnorz and Müller in the La-BA-Cu-O system resulted in very extensive research work about the discovery and synthesis of other high-temperature superconductors, such as Y-BA-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O. These new superconducting materials, possessing superconductivity above liquid nitrogen boiling point, are used in many engineering applications, from electronic sensors to rotating electrical generators and from nanometer-scale thin films to kilometer-long wires and coils. Therefore, design and net-shape manufacturing of superconducting components, starting from the initial synthesized powders, is now of utmost industrial importance. This book is primarily focused on the bulk-fabrication techniques of high-temperature ceramic superconducting components, especially on the combination of dynamic powder-consolidation and subsequent deformation processing. The properties of these ceramics, which are difficult-to-form materials by applying conventional techniques, are combined for the net-shape manufacturing of such components for the construction of HTS devices.
