Book Design Status of a Separated sector Cyclotron Booster Accelerator for the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility

Download or read book Design Status of a Separated sector Cyclotron Booster Accelerator for the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A separated-sector cyclotron booster accelerator is being designed for the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility as a Phase II project to be started in 1978. Phase I of the HHIRF, now under construction, includes a 25 MV tandem electrostatic accelerator, a beam transport and injection system to enable use of the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron as an energy booster for tandem beams, and some additional experiment areas and associated beam transport systems. The Phase I facility using the ORIC-25 MV tandem combination will provide energies up to about 25 MeV/amu for light ions such as oxygen and more than 5 MeV/amu up to the region of mass 160. The new Phase II separated-sector cyclotron will provide energies up to 100 MeV/amu for light ions and up to 12 MeV/amu for the heaviest ions such as uranium.

Book Operational Experience for Coupled Operation of the Holifield Tandem Electrostatic Accelerator and Isochronous Cyclotron

Download or read book Operational Experience for Coupled Operation of the Holifield Tandem Electrostatic Accelerator and Isochronous Cyclotron written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coupled operation of the 25 MV tandem accelerator and the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron of the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility began in January 1981. Since that time the use of the cyclotron in this mode has become routine. Thirty-six different ion species in the range from 9Be to 15°Nd have been accelerated; 106 separate beam setups have been provided. Since the beginning of coupled operation, significant improvement of cyclotron systems, and setup and operating techniques, have been made. The graphite electrostatic deflector septum formerly used for high-current light ion beams has been replaced by a thin molybdenum septum. Extraction system positioning mechanisms have been refined and recalibrated and more precise and reliable position readouts have been provided. The computer-based control system has been improved. The frequency range of the rf system has been increased to eliminate an energy dead-band. Cyclotron setup calculations have been improved and standardized methods have been developed to consistently achieve well-centered orbits, correct beam extraction system positions, and electrostatic and magnetic strengths. A totally new beam bunching system has been installed. The improvements in the phase-lock system of the beam buncher have been especially effective. A large number of obsolete and unreliable power supplies have been replaced. Beam extraction efficiency has been increased from approx. 50% to approx. 70%. Accuracy of obtaining the desired energy without fine tuning is now approx. 1% compared to 2 to 3% in early coupled operation. Beam setup time (tuning) has been reduced by approx. 20%. Unscheduled maintenance has been reduced by a factor of two.

Book Character of the Radiation Field and Shielding at the 184 inch Cyclotron

Download or read book Character of the Radiation Field and Shielding at the 184 inch Cyclotron written by and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beam of 200 Mev deuterons in the 184-inch cyclotron gives rise to a conical spray of fast neutrons. (Refer to papers A 10 and A 11 of this meeting) with an upper limit of neutron energy somewhat above 100 Mev. The angle of the cone from axis to half-height is about 5.5 for a target of high atomic number, as measured by Helmholz, MacMillan, and Sewell with carbon detectors. In planning for final shielding of the cyclotron It was necessary to study the attenuation of the neutron beam in concrete. Due to the nature of the information desired the experimental arrangement employed was that shown in Figure 1. The monitor and detector employed were aluminum-walled ionization chambers, with DC Amplification, indicating on microammeters placed outside the magnetic field of the cyclotron. With this same arrangement data were also obtained with water as an absorber, contained in steel tanks made to fit Into the cavity and in front of it. Results of these measurements are given in Figure 2(a). The data for water have been corrected for the absorbing contribution of the tank walls. The displacements of the linear portions of the absorption plots are evidence of transition effects to be discussed later in this paper. In Figure 2(b) are shown concrete absorption data obtained with carbon disc detectors using the C 12 (n,2n) C 11 reaction whose threshold is about 20 Mev.

Book Cyclotron Design Studies for a Medical Ion Accelerator

Download or read book Cyclotron Design Studies for a Medical Ion Accelerator written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two year design study has been completed for medical ion accelerators with beams of sufficient range and intensity for therapy. The particles of main interest were ions between carbon and neon, but the generation of proton and neutron beams was studied also. Cyclotrons appear to be good injectors for a heavy ion medical synchrotron, particularly if neutron and/or isotope production is desired as well. They also offer a competitive solution for proton beams of 250 MeV. A superconducting cyclotron design for 380 MeV/u carbon was worked out, but a synchrotron for heavy ion beams of 400 to 600 MeV/u and 5 x 109 particles/sec was found to be more economical and flexible.
