Book excerpt: This book presents novel and efficient tools, techniques and approaches for reliability evaluation, reliability analysis, and design of reliable communication networks using graph theoretic concepts. In recent years, human beings have become largely dependent on communication networks, such as computer communication networks, telecommunication networks, mobile switching networks etc., for their day-to-day activities. In today's world, humans and critical machines depend on these communication networks to work properly. Failure of these communication networks can result in situations where people may find themselves isolated, helpless and exposed to hazards. It is a fact that every component or system can fail and its failure probability increases with size and complexity. The main objective of this book is to devize approaches for reliability modeling and evaluation of such complex networks. Such evaluation helps to understand which network can give us better reliability by their design. New designs of fault-tolerant interconnection network layouts are proposed, which are capable of providing high reliability through path redundancy and fault tolerance through reduction of common elements in paths. This book covers the reliability evaluation of various network topologies considering multiple reliability performance parameters (two terminal reliability, broadcast reliability, all terminal reliability, and multiple sources to multiple destinations reliability).

Book excerpt: In the existing research literature a large number of regular MINs with their performance characteristics are available. However, there is relatively smaller number of irregular MINs. The present research work is an endeavour to study the importance and design of fault-tolerant MINs. It is with the use of various techniques based on high degree of parallelism, self-routing and modularity that three new dynamic irregular MINs have been proposed in order to improve their fault-tolerance, performance and reliability. The irregular networks have been considered because of their advantage of the shorter path length in comparison to their regular counterparts. The irregular dynamic MIN supports many redundant paths in the event of faults in order to dynamically reroute the data through a fault-free path and passes most of the permutations even under faults while improving the Mean-time to failure (MTTF).

Book excerpt: Abstract: "We develop and analyze a dilated high performance fault tolerant fast packet multistage interconnection network (MIN) in this paper. In this new design, the links at the input and the output stages of a dilated banyan-based MIN are rearranged to create multiple routes for each source-destination pair in the network after removing one stage in the network. These multiple paths are link- and node-disjoint. Fault tolerance at low latency is achieved by sending multiple copies of each input packet simultaneously using different routes and different priorities. This guarantees that high throughput is maintained even in the presence of faults. Throughput is analyzed using simulation and analysis and we show that the new design has considerably higher performance in the presence of a faulty switching element (SE) or link in comparison to dilated networks. We also analyze the reliability and show that the new design has superior reliability in comparison to competing proposals."

Among the high-performance network technologies available to build clusters, InfiniBand (IBA) has emerged as a new standard interconnect suitable for clusters. Indeed, has been adopted by many of the most powerful systems currently built (top500 list). As the number of nodes increases in these systems, the interconnection network grows accordingly. Along with the increase in components the probability of faults increases dramatically, and thus, fault tolerance in the system, in general, and in the interconnection network, in particular, becomes a necessity. Unfortunately, most of the fault-tolerant routing strategies proposed for massively parallel computers cannot be applied because routing and virtual channel transitions are deterministic in IBA, which prevent packets from avoiding the faults. This book focuses on methodologies for providing adequate levels of fault tolerance to PC clusters, specially tailored to IBA networks.
