Book Zero maintenance Pavements

Download or read book Zero maintenance Pavements written by Michael I. Darter and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results achieved during the first year's effort to determine performance requirements and capabilities of heavily trafficked conventional pavements to provide zero-maintenance performance. Five types of pavements are under consideration in this study: plain jointed concrete, reinforced jointed concrete, continuously reinforced concrete, flexible, and composite pavements. An extensive field survey of over 60 pavements carrying high traffic volumes was conducted and comprehensive analytical analyses were performed. A wealth of basic data has been accumulated for the development of zero-maintenance pavement design procedures during the next phase of the project.

Book Defining the Attributes of Good In service Portland Cement Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Defining the Attributes of Good In service Portland Cement Concrete Pavements written by James K. Cable and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the current research in portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements deals with the analysis of early pavement life failures and seeks to find ways to prevent those from reoccurring. The Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) portion of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) has identified some of the key factors in designing and building new PCC pavements. This statement will build on the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) project TR-463, Field Performance Study of Past Iowa Pavement Research: A Look Back. In Iowa and across the nation, there are multiple pavements that were built more than 20 years ago that have been and are continuing to provide very good service to the public. They are found on both state and local routes and in both low and high traffic volume areas. There is a need to learn what went into those pavements, from the subgrade through the surface, that makes them perform so well. The purpose of this research project was to conduct a scoping study that could be used to evaluate the need for additional research to study the attributes of well-performing concrete pavements. The concept of zero-maintenance jointed plain concrete pavements was iterated in this study for long-lasting, well-performing portland cement concrete pavement sections. The scope of the study was limited to a brief literature survey, pavement performance data collection from many counties, cities, and primary and interstate roads in Iowa, field visits to many selected pavement sites, and analysis of the collected data. No laboratory or field testing was conducted for this phase of the project. A problem statement with a research plan was created that could be used to guide the second phase of the project.

Book Concrete Pavement Design Details and Construction Practices

Download or read book Concrete Pavement Design Details and Construction Practices written by Kurt D. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This document serves as the primary reference manual for the FHWA/NHI training course Concrete Pavement Design Details and Construction Practices". The course provides participants with current guidelines on the design and construction of concrete pavements. Key topics covered include concrete pavement type selection, subgrade preparation and characterization, drainage design, base and subbase consideration, thickness design, joint design, shoulder considerations, construction considerations, special design considerations for reinforced concrete pavements, and maintenance considerations. Emphasis is given to jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP), although special design considerations for jointed reinforced concrete pavements (JRCP) and continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP) are discussed"--Technical report documentation page

Book Unique Concepts and Systems for zero maintenance Pavements

Download or read book Unique Concepts and Systems for zero maintenance Pavements written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a State-of-the-Art report surveying many new, as well as infrequently used techniques for improving the performance of the components of pavement systems. The goal of this work was to identify important factors affecting the design of new structural systems for "zero-maintenance" pavements. The three basic components of the conventional pavement system--the subgrade, the subbase and base, and the surface course--have been examined. The latest techniques of strengthening and stabilizing the subgrade component, and preserving its improved properties are reviewed. The feasibility of utilizing synthetic aggregates and waste products in "zero-maintenance" pavements is addressed. The utilization of new materials and new systems such as prefabricated panels and pile supported pavements have also been investigated. Evaluations of existing information on the individual pavement system components have been synthesized to produce one modified conventional, and seven new structural pavement systems that may be capable of satisfying "zero-maintenance" criteria.

Book Zero maintenance Considerations for Concrete Pavement Design

Download or read book Zero maintenance Considerations for Concrete Pavement Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, most concrete pavement thickness design procedures do not consider curling stress in fatigue analysis, but many researchers indicate that it should be considered to warrant a zero-maintenance thickness design. Thus, a review of the most widely-adopted PCA design procedure was conducted and concise modification recommendations were provided. Based on Westergaard's edge stress solution and several prediction models for stress adjustments for a variety of loading and environmental (i.e., thermal curling) conditions, a modified PCA equivalent stress analysis and thickness design procedure was proposed and implemented in a highly user-friendly, window-based TKUPAV program for practical trial applications. The proposed approach has been further verified by reproducing very close results to the equivalent stresses and fatigue damages using PCAPAV program, Microsoft EXCEL spreadsheets, and the TKUPAV program. The possible detrimental effect of loading plus day-time curling has also been illustrated in a case study, indicating that the effect of thermal curling should be considered in zero-maintenance design of concrete pavements.
