Book Racing Chassis and Suspension Design

Download or read book Racing Chassis and Suspension Design written by Carroll Smith and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2004-05-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hand-selected by racing engineer legend Carroll Smith, the 28 SAE Technical Papers in this book focus on the chassis and suspension design of pure racing cars, an area that has traditionally been - farmed out - to independent designers or firms since the early 1970s. Smith believed that any discussion of vehicle dynamics must begin with a basic understanding of the pneumatic tire, the focus of the first chapter. The racing tire connects the racing car to the track surface by only the footprints of its four tires. Through the tires, the driver receives most of the sensory information needed to maintain or regain control of the race car at high force levels. The second chapter, focusing on suspension design, is an introduction to this complex and fascinating subject. Topics covered include chassis stiffness and flexibility, suspension tuning on the cornering of a Winston Cup race car, suspension kinematics, and vehicle dynamics of road racing cars. Chapter 3 addresses the design of the racing chassis design and how aerodynamics affect the chassis, and the final chapter on materials brings out the fact that the modern racing car utilizes carbon construction to the maximum extent allowed by regulations. These technical papers, written between 1971 and 2003, offer what Smith believed to be the best and most practical nuggets of racing chassis and suspension design information.

Book Design and Optimization of a Formula SAE Racecar Chassis and Suspension

Download or read book Design and Optimization of a Formula SAE Racecar Chassis and Suspension written by Reid F. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing and constructing a chassis and suspension system for a Formula SAE racecar is a highly complex task involving the interaction of hundreds of parts that all perform an essential function. This thesis examines the critical factors in designing and implementing a Formula SAE chassis from the ground up, with a focus on the performance and optimization of the vehicle as an entire system rather than a collection of individual parts. Analysis includes examining the stiffness, strength, and weight of each part, as well as design verification. The thesis will serve as a summary of the knowledge that I have accumulated over four years of personally designing and overseeing the manufacturing of the MIT Motorsports suspension, provide insight into the design of the MY2009 vehicle, and act as a guide for future chassis designers.

Book Chassis Engineering

Download or read book Chassis Engineering written by Herb Adams and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1992-11-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most forms of racing, cornering speed is the key to winning. On the street, precise and predictable handling is the key to high performance driving. However, the art and science of engineering a chassis can be difficult to comprehend, let alone apply. Chassis Engineering explains the complex principles of suspension geometry and chassis design in terms the novice can easily understand and apply to any project. Hundreds of photos and illustrations illustrate what it takes to design, build, and tune the ultimate chassis for maximum cornering power on and off the track.

Book Race Car Design

Download or read book Race Car Design written by Derek Seward and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the principles of engineering science, physics and mathematics, but assuming only an elementary understanding of these, this textbook masterfully explains the theory and practice of the subject. Bringing together key topics, including the chassis frame, suspension, steering, tyres, brakes, transmission, lubrication and fuel systems, this is the first text to cover all the essential elements of race car design in one student-friendly textbook. It avoids the pitfalls of being either too theoretical and mathematical, or else resorting to approximations without explanation of the underlying theory. Where relevant, emphasis is placed on the important role that computer tools play in the modern design process. This book is intended for motorsport engineering students and is the best possible resource for those involved in Formula Student/FSAE. It is also a valuable guide for practising car designers and constructors, and enthusiasts.

  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Racecar written by Matt Brown and published by Matt Brown. This book was released on 2011 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, a small unavailing university auto racing team began building a racecar that would challenge the best engineering schools in the world. With fewer people and resources than any of the top competitors, the only way they were going to win was to push the limit, go for broke, and hope for more than a little luck. By the time they got to the racetrack, they knew: In the fog of fierce competition, whether you win or lose, you learn the hardest lessons about engineering, teamwork, friendship, and yourself.

Book Design and Analysis of a Monocoque Chassis for an Electric Formula SAE Vehicle

Download or read book Design and Analysis of a Monocoque Chassis for an Electric Formula SAE Vehicle written by Oliver Philip MacNeely and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chassis design of a racecar is fundamental to unlocking the maximum vehicle performance by supporting the applied external loads with a low-mass, high-stiffness structure. Thus far, MIT's Formula SAE team has developed and utilized welded steel tube chassis designs for their racecars due to their relative simplicity and economy. By taking advantage of the directional stiffness of anisotropic carbon fiber materials, a monocoque design offers a stiffer structure with similar or lower total mass resulting in a high specific stiffness design that out-performs conventional welded designs. This thesis provides a detailed background on chassis design and the necessary design requirements to meet performance targets and competition regulations. Composite laminate designs are proposed and then integrated into a full-chassis structural design that is then analyzed for torsional stiffness in the ANSYS FEM package. Finally, potted insert design and avenues for future development are considered.
