Book Design of Special Planar Linkages

Download or read book Design of Special Planar Linkages written by Jingshan Zhao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planar linkages play a very important role in mechanical engineering. As the simplest closed chain mechanisms, planar four-bar linkages are widely used in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and aerospace engineering. Design of Special Planar Linkages proposes a uniform design theory for planar four-bar linkages. The merit of the method proposed in this book is that it allows engineers to directly obtain accurate results when there are such solutions for the specified n precise positions; otherwise, the best approximate solutions will be found. This book discusses the kinematics and reachable workspace and singularity of a planar 3-RRR linkage, which can be used to analyze other planar linkages. Then a foldable stair that retains the walking conversions of human beings and all the merits of a concrete stair in civil engineering is described along with a lifting guidance mechanism that has the advantages of high strength, high rigidity, lightweight overconstraint trusses and motion flexibility. The method proposed in this book can be applied to other planar linkages. This book offers a valuable resource for scientists, researchers, engineers, graduate students in mechanical engineering especially those interested in engineering design, robotics and automation. Jingshan Zhao, Associate professor; Zhijing Feng and Fulei Chu, professor; Ning Ma, Dr., all work at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the mathematical theory of design for articulated mechanical systems known as linkages. The focus is on sizing mechanical constraints that guide the movement of a work piece, or end-effector, of the system. The function of the device is prescribed as a set of positions to be reachable by the end-effector; and the mechanical constraints are formed by joints that limit relative movement. The goal is to find all the devices that can achieve a specific task. Formulated in this way the design problem is purely geometric in character. Robot manipulators, walking machines, and mechanical hands are examples of articulated mechanical systems that rely on simple mechanical constraints to provide a complex workspace for the end- effector. The principles presented in this book form the foundation for a design theory for these devices. The emphasis, however, is on articulated systems with fewer degrees of freedom than that of the typical robotic system, and therefore, less complexity. This book will be useful to mathematics, engineering and computer science departments teaching courses on mathematical modeling of robotics and other articulated mechanical systems. This new edition includes research results of the past decade on the synthesis of multi loop planar and spherical linkages, and the use of homotopy methods and Clifford algebras in the synthesis of spatial serial chains. One new chapter on the synthesis of spatial serial chains introduces numerical homotopy and the linear product decomposition of polynomial systems. The second new chapter introduces the Clifford algebra formulation of the kinematics equations of serial chain robots. Examples are use throughout to demonstrate the theory.

Book Design and Analysis of Mechanisms

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Mechanisms written by Michael J. Rider and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A planar or two-dimensional (2D) mechanism is the combination of two or more machine elements that are designed to convey a force or motion across parallel planes. For any mechanical engineer, young or old, an understanding of planar mechanism design is fundamental. Mechanical components and complex machines, such as engines or robots, are often designed and conceptualised in 2D before being extended into 3D. Designed to encourage a clear understanding of the nature and design of planar mechanisms, this book favours a frank and straightforward approach to teaching the basics of planar mechanism design and the theory of machines with fully worked examples throughout. Key Features: Provides simple instruction in the design and analysis of planar mechanisms, enabling the student to easily navigate the text and find the desired material Covers topics of fundamental importance to mechanical engineering, from planar mechanism kinematics, 2D linkage analyses and 2D linkage design to the fundamentals of spur gears and cam design Shows numerous example solutions using EES (Engineering Equation Solver) and MATLAB software, with appendices dedicated to explaining the use of both computer tools Follows end-of-chapter problems with clearly detailed solutions

Book Driving Linkages for Deployable Planar and Spherical Articulated Systems

This book was released on 2009 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we consider the design of planar linkages known as 10-bars. A 10-bar linkage consists of 10 rigid bodies connected by 13 hinged, or sliding, joints so that the entire system has one degree-of-freedom. Our goal is a systematic process for the design of a 10-bar linkage that guides a folding pair of hinged bars. A specified movement for this folding 2-bar chain is the task requirements for the design process. Our design process uses recently develop six-bar linkage synthesis techniques based on constraining 3R planar open chains. There are several examples of 10-bar linkage designs in the literature, however each is a specialized example. Our work is the first to provide a systematic process, though it is limited to one of the 230 topologies of the 10-bar linkage. Our 10-bar linkage design process yields a drive linkage to actuate planar and spherical scale-change linkage. We demonstrate this design methodology with a the drive linkages for a planar deployable laundry hanger and for a deployable spherical shelter.

Book A New Computer aided Design and Simulation System for Planar Linkages

Download or read book A New Computer aided Design and Simulation System for Planar Linkages written by Cong Yue and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a new computer-aided linkage design and simulation system for task driven path generation problem. Mechanism design is considered a mixture of science and art. The former is about utilizing computers to rigorously sizing a mechanism in meeting a set of design requirements. And the latter is about taking advantage of designers' experience to narrow down design domain and speed up the design process. The ultimate goal of the presented design system is to incorporate both science and art into the linkage design process by (1) developing an automatic design framework based on library searching and optimization techniques and (2) developing an interactive design framework based on advanced human-computer interfaces. To enable the design automation framework, we first built a library of open and closed planar curves generated by commonly used planar linkages. We then turned the classical linkage path generation problem into a library searching problem together with a local optimization problem. To enable the interactive design framework, we developed a set of design interfaces that facilitate designers intervene and steer the design process. This hybrid design system was developed based on our existing VRMDS (Virtual Reality Mechanism Design Studio) framework. The result is a versatile mechanism design tool that is beneficial to the early stages of the mechanism design process.
