Book Design of Orbital Debris Shields for Oblique Hypervelocity Impact

Download or read book Design of Orbital Debris Shields for Oblique Hypervelocity Impact written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new impact debris propagation code was written to link CTH simulations of space debris shield perforation to the Lagrangian finite element code DYNA3D, for space structure wall impact simulations. This software (DC3D) simulates debris cloud evolution using a nonlinear elastic-plastic deformable particle dynamics model, and renders computationally tractable the supercomputer simulation of oblique impacts on Whipple shield protected structures. Comparison of three dimensional, oblique impact simulations with experimental data shows good agreement over a range of velocities of interest in the design of orbital debris shielding. Source code developed during this research is provided on the enclosed floppy disk. An abstract based on the work described was submitted to the 1994 Hypervelocity Impact Symposium. Book Particle Hydrodynamics with Material Strength for Multi Layer Orbital Debris Shield Design

Download or read book Particle Hydrodynamics with Material Strength for Multi Layer Orbital Debris Shield Design written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-16 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three dimensional simulation of oblique hypervelocity impact on orbital debris shielding places extreme demands on computer resources. Research to date has shown that particle models provide the most accurate and efficient means for computer simulation of shield design problems. In order to employ a particle based modeling approach to the wall plate impact portion of the shield design problem, it is essential that particle codes be augmented to represent strength effects. This report describes augmentation of a Lagrangian particle hydrodynamics code developed by the principal investigator, to include strength effects, allowing for the entire shield impact problem to be represented using a single computer code.Fahrenthold, Eric P.Johnson Space CenterHYDRODYNAMICS; THREE DIMENSIONAL MODELS; OBLIQUE SHOCK WAVES; HYPERVELOCITY IMPACT; SPACE DEBRIS; AUGMENTATION; COMPUTERIZED SIMULATION; COMPUTER PROGRAMS; WALLS; MECHANICAL PROPERTIES; DESIGN ANALYSIS

Book Hypervelocity Impact Analysis of International Space Station Whipple and Enhanced Stuffed Whipple Shields

Download or read book Hypervelocity Impact Analysis of International Space Station Whipple and Enhanced Stuffed Whipple Shields written by Michael E. Kalinski and published by . This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Space Station (ISS) must be able to withstand the hypervelocity impacts of micrometeoroids and orbital debris that strike its many surfaces. In order to design and implement shielding which will prevent hull penetration or other operational losses, NASA must first model the orbital debris and micrometeoroid environment. Based upon this environment, special multi-stage shields called Whipple and Enhanced Stuffed Whipple Shields are developed and implemented to protect the ISS surfaces. Ballistic limit curves that establish shield failure criteria are determined via ground testing. These curves are functions of material strength, shield spacing, projectile size, shape and density, as well as a number of other variables. The combination of debris models and ballistic limit equations allows NASA to model risk to the ISS using a hydrocode called BUMPER. This thesis modifies and refines existing ballistic limit equations for U.S. Laboratory Module shields to account for the effects of the projectile (debris/ micro-meteoroid) densities. Using these refined ballistic limit equations this thesis also examines alternative shielding materials and configurations to optimize shield design for minimum mass and maximum stopping potential, proposing alternate shield designs for future NASA ground testing. A final goal of this thesis is to provide the Department of Defense a background in satellite shield theory and design in order to improve protection against micrometeoroid and orbital debris impacts on future space-based national systems.

Book Techniques to Obtain Orbital Debris Encounter Speeds in the Laboratory

Download or read book Techniques to Obtain Orbital Debris Encounter Speeds in the Laboratory written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding high-pressure material behavior is crucial to address the physical processes in hypervelocity impact events related to space sciences such as orbital-debris impact on a debris shield. At very high impact velocities, material properties will be dominated by phase changes, such as melting or vaporization, which cannot be achieved at lower impact velocities. Development of well-controlled, repeatable hypervelocity launch capabilities is the first step necessary to improve understanding of material behavior at extreme pressures and temperatures not currently available using conventional two-stage light-gas guns. In this paper, techniques used to extend the launch capabilities of a two-stage light gas gun to 16 km/s are described. It is anticipated that this technology will be useful in testing, evaluating, and design of various debris shields proposed for many different spacecrafts.

Download or read book Orbital Debris written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-07-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of space flight, the collision hazard in Earth orbit has increased as the number of artificial objects orbiting the Earth has grown. Spacecraft performing communications, navigation, scientific, and other missions now share Earth orbit with spent rocket bodies, nonfunctional spacecraft, fragments from spacecraft breakups, and other debris created as a byproduct of space operations. Orbital Debris examines the methods we can use to characterize orbital debris, estimates the magnitude of the debris population, and assesses the hazard that this population poses to spacecraft. Potential methods to protect spacecraft are explored. The report also takes a close look at the projected future growth in the debris population and evaluates approaches to reducing that growth. Orbital Debris offers clear recommendations for targeted research on the debris population, for methods to improve the protection of spacecraft, on methods to reduce the creation of debris in the future, and much more.

Book Simulation of Hypervelocity Impact on Aluminum Nextel Kevlar Orbital Debris Shields

This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An improved hybrid particle-finite element method has been developed for hypervelocity impact simulation. The method combines the general contact-impact capabilities of particle codes with the true Lagrangian kinematics of large strain finite element formulations. Unlike some alternative schemes which couple Lagrangian finite element models with smooth particle hydrodynamics, the present formulation makes no use of slidelines or penalty forces. The method has been implemented in a parallel, three dimensional computer code. Simulations of three dimensional orbital debris impact problems using this parallel hybrid particle-finite element code, show good agreement with experiment and good speedup in parallel computation. The simulations included single and multi-plate shields as well as aluminum and composite shielding materials. at an impact velocity of eleven kilometers per second.Fahrenthold, Eric P.Johnson Space CenterSIMULATION; HYPERVELOCITY IMPACT; ALUMINUM; FINITE ELEMENT METHOD; COMPUTER PROGRAMS; KEVLAR (TRADEMARK); SHIELDING; SPACE DEBRIS; COMPUTATION; HYDRODYNAMICS; IMPACT VELOCITY; LAGRANGIAN FUNCTION; METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES; PARALLEL COMPUTERS

Book Numerical Simulation of Ballistic Limit Curves for Orbital Debris Shielding

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Ballistic Limit Curves for Orbital Debris Shielding written by Robert James Rabb and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXOS is a recently developed particle finite element code well suited to modeling hypervelocity impact phenomena. A series of EXOS simulations were conducted to evaluate the use of this new code for orbital debris shielding design. Two sets of simulations, one for a single bumper Whipple shield and one for a two bumper or stuffed Whipple shield, were compared to well known equations for the ballistic limit of Whipple shields, derived from experiment. The results show that EXOS provides an accurate and computationally tractable approach to simulate orbital debris shield performance.

Download or read book Space Debris written by N.N. Smirnov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-11-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first sputnik was launched and the space era began, few gave thought to the possible negative impact of putting satellites into orbit. In fact, man's space activity has led to the formation of a new media named "space debris," i.e. man-made objects and their fragments launched into space, currently inactive and no longer serving any useful purpose. Space Debris: Hazard Evaluation and Mitigation will appeal to readers unfamiliar with the issues, as well as experts and designers. It introduces concepts behind the problems of space ecology. The volume features actual data on the space debris environment; new mathematical models for space debris evolution, production and self-production; description of the existing software and concepts for shield design. The author also reviews methods of collision risk assessment, including the attitudes and inclinations of orbits, collision hazard evaluation and suggestions for preventative measures.
