The design of an aircraft and its associated systems, including the landing system, involves iterative loops as the impact of each modification to a system or component is evaluated against the whole. It is rare to find that the lightest possible landing gear represents the best solution for the aircraft: the lightest landing gear may require attachment structures which don't exist and which would require significant weight and compromise on the part of the airframe structure design. With those requirements and compromises in mind,The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear starts with the study of airfield compatibility, aircraft stability on the ground, the correct choice of tires, followed by discussion of brakes, wheels, and brake control systems. Various landing gear architectures are investigated together with the details of shock absorber designs. Retraction, kinematics, and mechanisms are studied as well as possible actuation approaches. Detailed information on the various hydraulic and electric services commonly found on aircraft, and system elements such as dressings, lighting, and steering are also reviewed. All axles, wheel forks, links, arms, mechanical and gas/oil shock struts, downlock and uplock assemblies, braces, trunnion beams, and truck beams, etc., that sustain loads originating at the ground, and that are not integral parts of the airframe structure, should be designed and validated in accordance with this document. Hydraulic actuators (retraction, main and nose gear steering, positioning, damping, etc.) should also be included in this coverage. System level, non-structural components such as retraction/extension valves, controllers, secondary structure and mechanisms in the airframe (e.g., manual release mechanisms, slaved doors) as well as equipment that is located in the cockpit are not addressed in this ARP. This document defines the Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) for the design and verification of landing gear structures and mechanisms. This ARP revision corrects testing inaccuracies in the Static Leak Section of previous revisions.

USAF (WPAFB) - recommendations. It is the objective of this AIR to present a summary of these responses. It is hoped that this summary will be useful to designers as a guide and/or check list in establishing criteria for landing gear analysis and test.AIR 1494 Verification of Landing Gear Design Strength will be cancelled as the contents of this document were included in the latest update of ARP1311C Landing Gear Structures and Mechanisms.

Book excerpt: The structural performance of a boron-epoxy-reinforced titanium drag strut, containing a bonded scarf joint and designed to the criteria of a large commercial transport, has been evaluated experimentally and analytically. The strut was exposed to two lifetimes of fatigue loading and was statically loaded to the tensile and compressive design ultimate loads. Throughout the test program no evidence of any damage in the drag strut was detected by strain-gage measurements, ultrasonic inspection, or visual observation. The bonded joint was analyzed using the NASTRAN(R) (NASA Structural Analysis) computer program. A comparison of the strains predicted by the NASTRAN computer program with the experimentally determined values shows excellent agreement. An analytical study indicated that the nonlinear behavior of a structural spacer at each end of the strut could be explained by the inelastic behavior and possible creep of the adhesive. (AN).
