Book excerpt: Fatigue, the gradual accumulation of damage in of a material due to microstructural damage and subsequent crack growth, is prevalent among almost all components who sustain prolonged periods of cyclic loading. The number of loading cycles until failure is known as the fatigue life of a material, and is a function of the applied cyclic stress history. For certain materials and operating conditions, it is common to assume infinite fatigue life for stress amplitude levels below a certain value, known as the endurance limit. In this work, rectangular fatigue specimens were designed and simulated using finite element analysis software. Both free-free and fixed-free boundary conditions were studied to achieve a near resonance response assuming a commercially available shaker as the source of harmonic excitation. Eigenfrequency studies were used to determine resonant frequencies and time domain studies were used to simulate loading cycle histories. In the time domain analysis, special consideration was required for defining boundary conditions for valid finite element solutions. The results showed that nearly constant stress amplitude cycles were obtainable at the target stress of 140 MPa. By manipulating the free parameters of the shaker, a wide range of relatively low stress amplitudes can be generated to fully explore the high cycle (> 10^8 cycles) fatigue regime. Future work can be done to validate the simulated results, as well as design the appropriate mounting fixtures used to deliver the two boundary conditions used in the simulation. The proposed technique would allow measurement of high cycle fatigue properties, which can inform design choices and reduced costs associated with system failure and costs incurred through system downtime.

The 25 papers included in the STP have been extended and revised by the authors. The conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 25-28 June 2001, and was chaired by Manual De Freitas, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon. The meeting, organised by the Instituto Superior Tecnico and sponsored by the Portuguese Minesterio da Cienca e da Tecnologia and by the European Structural Integrity Society, was attended by 151 delegates from 20 countries. The papers in the present book deal with the theoretical, numerical and experimental aspects of the Multiaxial fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures. They are divided in to the following six sections; Multiaxial Fatigue of Welded Structures; High cycle Multiaxial fatigue; Non proportional and Variable-Amplitude loading; Defects, Notches, Crack Growth; Low Cycle Multiaxial Fatigue; Applications and Testing Methods. As is well-known, most engineering components and structures in the mechanical, aerospace, power generation, and other industries are subjected to multiaxial loading during their service life. One of the most difficult tasks in design against fatigue and fracture is to translate the information gathered from uniaxial fatigue and fracture tests on engineering materials into applications involving complex states of cyclic stress-strain conditions. This book is the result of co-operation between many researchers from different laboratories, universities and industries in a number of countries.

Methods of determining likely crack growth directions are also proposed. Important parameters to be considered in refining the initial approximate analysis are discussed.

The cracks which grow may either originate from some pre-existing macroscopic defect, or, if the component is of high integrity but highly stressed, a region of localized stress concentration. In turn, such concentrators may be caused by some minute defect, such as a tiny inclusion, or inadvertent machining damage. Another source of surface damage which may exist between notionally 'bonded' components is associated with minute relative motion along the interface, brought about usually be cyclic tangential loading. Such fretting damage is quite insidious, and may lead to many kinds of problems such as wear, but it is its influence on the promotion of embryo cracks with which we are concerned here. When the presence of fretting is associated with decreased fatigue performance the effect is known as fretting fatigue. Fretting fatigue is a subject drawing equally on materials science and applied mechanics, but it is the intention in this book to concentrate attention entirely on the latter aspects, in a search for the quantification of the influence of fretting on both crack nucleation and propagation. There have been very few previous texts in this area, and the present volume seeks to cover five principal areas; (a) The modelling of contact problems including partial slip under tangentialloading, which produces the surface damage. (b) The modelling of short cracks by rigorous methods which deal effectively with steep stress gradients, kinking and closure. (c) The experimental simulation of fretting fatigue.
