Download or read book Permafrost Soils written by Rosa Margesin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the Earth’s biosphere is characterized by low temperatures. Vast areas (>20%) of the soil ecosystem are permanently frozen or are unfrozen for only a few weeks in summer. Permafrost regions occur at high latitudes and also at high ele- tions; a significant part of the global permafrost area is represented by mountains. Permafrost soils are of global interest, since a significant increase in temperature is predicted for polar regions. Global warming will have a great impact on these soils, especially in northern regions, since they contain large amounts of organic carbon and act as carbon sinks, and a temperature increase will result in a release of carbon into the atmosphere. Additionally, the intensified release of the clima- relevant tracer gas methane represents a potential environmental harzard. Significant numbers of viable microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, p- totrophic cyanobacteria and green algae, fungi and protozoa, are present in per- frost, and the characteristics of these microorganisms reflect the unique and extreme conditions of the permafrost environment. Remarkably, these microorg- isms have been reported to be metabolically active at subzero temperatures, even down to ?20°C.

Book The Strength of Permafrost Under Building Foundations

Download or read book The Strength of Permafrost Under Building Foundations written by Vsevolod Glebovich Berezant︠s︡ev and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength of permafrost is basically determined by the force of cohesion which usually varies between 2.5 and 18 kg per cm2. The angle of internal friction does not exceed 20° either in frozen clay or in frozen sandy soils, and may be disregarded whenever the cohesion force is expressed by the magnitude of 2.0 kg per cm2, or more. A modified revision is given of Prandtl?s formula to determine the critical load on frozen ground foundations.

Book Design of Foundations in Permafrost

Download or read book Design of Foundations in Permafrost written by Kenneth R. Shankle and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relatively recent growth in military and scientific facilities in polar regions and the industrial exploitation of Alaska and northern Canada, has necessitated a better understanding of the physical environment of cold regions. With this increased activity and occupation of cold regions also comes the need for better engineered structures. Foundations on permafrost, or perennially frozen ground, present special problems and demands in design and construction. Design of foundations in areas of seasonal frost where the material below the frost line remains unfrozen present certain problems. However, by taking structural loads to depths below the frost line, potential problems from heave and lateral thrust are generally removed. Permafrost itself is actually a fairly good material with high compressive strength. However, it does tend to creep under load, and cyclical freezing and thawing are of particular concern. Freezing and thawing have dramatic effects on the soil properties upon which the stability or a structure depends. The magnitude of these effects depend not only on the type of soil and its water content, but also on environmental factors such as weather, ground cover, snow, and the thermal properties of subsurface materials.

Book An Introduction to Foundations in Areas of Significant Frost Penetration

Download or read book An Introduction to Foundations in Areas of Significant Frost Penetration written by J. Paul Guyer and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-06-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Areas of significant frost penetration may be defined as those in which freezing temperatures occur in the ground to sufficient depth to be a significant factor in foundation design. These areas may be further characterized as seasonal frost and permafrost zones. Freeze-thaw temperature changes can exert major and potentially destructive forces on the foundations of structures. This publication discusses planning, design and construction methods for buildings and other infrastructure that can mitigate these forces in areas of significant frost penetration.
