Book Planning Twentieth Century Capital Cities

Download or read book Planning Twentieth Century Capital Cities written by David Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century witnessed an unprecedented increase in the number of capital cities worldwide – in 1900 there were only about forty, but by 2000 there were more than two hundred. And this, surely, is reason enough for a book devoted to the planning and development of capital cities in the twentieth century. However, the focus here is not only on recently created capitals. Indeed, the case studies which make up the core of the book show that, while very different, the development of London or Rome presents as great a challenge to planners and politicians as the design and building of Brasília or Chandigarh. Put simply, this book sets out to explore what makes capital cities different from other cities, why their planning is unique, and why there is such variety from one city to another. Sir Peter Hall’s ‘Seven Types of Capital City’ and Lawrence Vale’s ‘The Urban Design of Twentieth Century Capital Cities’ provide the setting for the fifteen case studies which follow – Paris, Moscow and St Petersburg, Helsinki, London, Tokyo, Washington, Canberra, Ottawa-Hull, Brasília, New Delhi, Berlin, Rome, Chandigarh, Brussels, New York. To bring the book to a close Peter Hall looks to the future of capital cities in the twenty-first century. For anyone with an interest in urban planning and design, architectural, planning and urban history, urban geography, or simply capital cities and why they are what they are, Planning Twentieth Century Capital Cities will be the key source book for a long time to come.

Book Power and Architecture

Download or read book Power and Architecture written by Michael Minkenberg and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capital cities have been the seat of political power and central stage for their state’s political conflicts and rituals throughout the ages. In the modern era, they provide symbols for and confer meaning to the state, thereby contributing to the “invention” of the nation. Capitals capture the imagination of natives, visitors and outsiders alike, yet also express the outcomes of power struggles within the political systems in which they operate. This volume addresses the reciprocal relationships between identity, regime formation, urban planning, and public architecture in the Western world. It examines the role of urban design and architecture in expressing (or hiding) ideological beliefs and political agenda. Case studies include “old” capitals such as Rome, Vienna, Berlin and Warsaw; “new” ones such as Washington DC, Ottawa, Canberra, Ankara, Bonn, and Brasília; and the “European” capital Brussels. Each case reflects the authors’ different disciplinary backgrounds in architecture, history, political science, and urban studies, demonstrating the value of an interdisciplinary approach to studying cities.

Book excerpt: Between 1790 and the 1840s, the District of Columbia served as a laboratory for the ideological experiments of federal officials. Unlike the politically independent states or the loosely governed territories, national politicians could use their exclusive jurisdiction over the District to create a model community for the nation. This dissertation compares the ideological visions for the nation put forth by the parties in power with their practical answers to questions of development and spending in the capital. In this analysis, the design of the federal city, its physical, economic, and social development, and the buildings erected there all reveal the impact of federal policies regarding the District. This analytical vantage point also exposes the practical limitations encountered by federal officials seeking to influence the development of the District. In addition, this project examines District residents' efforts of to promote local growth and development. By and large, these residents bought into a vision for a grand capital city articulated by George Washington, especially the elites who wielded political, economic, and social authority there. Driven by a mixture of self-interest and national pride, these local leaders worked to make this vision a reality, even in the face of the Jeffersonian "Revolution of 1800," which greatly diminished federal support for the city. Acutely aware of the dim view of the capital held by many Americans and of the District's role as a symbol of the American nation, they embarked upon social and economic development projects the scope and scale of which often suggested national rather than local ambitions.

Book Architecture and Politics in Nigeria

Download or read book Architecture and Politics in Nigeria written by Nnamdi Elleh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975, the Nigerian authorities decided to construct a new postcolonial capital called Abuja, and together with several internationally renowned architects these military leaders collaborated to build a city for three million inhabitants. Founded five years after the Civil War with Biafra, which caused around 1.7 million deaths, the city was envisaged as a place where justice would reign and where people from different social, religious, ethnic, and political backgrounds would come together in a peaceful manner and work together to develop their country and its economy. These were all laudable goals, but they ironically mobilized certain forces from around the country in opposition against the Federal Government of Nigeria. The international and modernist style architecture and the fact that the government spent tens of billions of dollars constructing this idealized capital ended up causing more strife and conflict. For groups like Boko Haram, a Nigerian Al-Qaida affiliate organization, and other smaller ethnic groups seeking to have a say in how the country’s oil wealth is spent, Abuja symbolized everything in Nigeria they sought to change. By examining the creation of the modernist national public spaces of Abuja within a broader historical and global context, this book looks at how the successes and the failures of these spaces have affected the citizens of the country and have, in fact, radicalized individuals with these spaces being scene of some of the most important political events and terrorist targets, including bombings and protest rallies. Although focusing on Nigeria’s capital, the study has a wider global implication in that it draws attention to how postcolonial countries that were formed at the turn of the twentieth century are continuously fragmenting and remade by the emergence of new nation states like South Sudan.
