Book Collectives and the Design of Complex Systems

Download or read book Collectives and the Design of Complex Systems written by Kagan Tumer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many complex systems found in nature can be viewed as function optimizers. In particular, they can be viewed as such optimizers of functions in extremely high dimensional spaces. Given the difficulty of performing such high-dimensional op timization with modern computers, there has been a lot of exploration of computa tional algorithms that try to emulate those naturally-occurring function optimizers. Examples include simulated annealing (SA [15,18]), genetic algorithms (GAs) and evolutionary computation [2,3,9,11,20-22,24,28]. The ultimate goal of this work is an algorithm that can, for any provided high-dimensional function, come close to extremizing that function. Particularly desirable would be such an algorithm that works in an adaptive and robust manner, without any explicit knowledge of the form of the function being optimized. In particular, such an algorithm could be used for distributed adaptive control---one of the most important tasks engineers will face in the future, when the systems they design will be massively distributed and horribly messy congeries ofcomputational systems.

Book Design of Complex Systems Research

Download or read book Design of Complex Systems Research written by Peter Belohlavek and published by Blue Eagle Group. This book was released on 2008-01-02 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you need to deal with complex problems, this book will open a door and widen your possibilities to influence them. Complex systems research methodologies used until today include both intuitive and mathematical approaches to approximate solutions. The unicist approach to complexity using ontology-based logical inferences made the solution of complex problems understandable, reasonable and provable. This R&D e-book will give you an introduction to the unicist approach to complexity research. The final goal of a diagnosis is to influence reality. To do so the researcher needs to explain it, but the explanation is only a comprehension framework to exert influence on the environment under study. The research that merely tries to explain a situation becomes an end in itself and therefore tends to be fallacious. All reality that operates as a complex system needs to be approached as a unified field. The unified field is not susceptible to division into variables. Division is only possible when dealing with a non-complex system. A complex system can only be studied as a unit. A very strict methodology, forecast and validation/falsification are required to avoid falling into fallacies that will lead into erroneous diagnoses. This work provides a list of actions to design the research that would permit to diagnose complex problems. It includes the unicist ontology of complex systems research.

Book Complex Systems in Knowledge based Environments Theory Models and Applications

Download or read book Complex Systems in Knowledge based Environments Theory Models and Applications written by Andreas Tolk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tremendous growth in the availability of inexpensive computing power and easy availability of computers have generated tremendous interest in the design and imp- mentation of Complex Systems. Computer-based solutions offer great support in the design of Complex Systems. Furthermore, Complex Systems are becoming incre- ingly complex themselves. This research book comprises a selection of state-of-the-art contributions to topics dealing with Complex Systems in a Knowledge-based En- ronment. Complex systems are ubiquitous. Examples comprise, but are not limited to System of Systems, Service-oriented Approaches, Agent-based Systems, and Complex Distributed Virtual Systems. These are application domains that require knowledge of engineering and management methods and are beyond the scope of traditional systems. The chapters in this book deal with a selection of topics which range from unc- tainty representation, management and the use of ontological means which support and are large-scale business integration. All contributions were invited and are based on the recognition of the expertise of the contributing authors in the field. By colle- ing these sources together in one volume, the intention was to present a variety of tools to the reader to assist in both study and work. The second intention was to show how the different facets presented in the chapters are complementary and contribute towards this emerging discipline designed to aid in the analysis of complex systems.

Book An Introduction to Complex Systems

Download or read book An Introduction to Complex Systems written by Joe Tranquillo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interdisciplinary field of complex systems theory. By the end of the book, readers will be able to understand terminology that is used in complex systems and how they are related to one another; see the patterns of complex systems in practical examples; map current topics, in a variety of fields, to complexity theory; and be able to read more advanced literature in the field. The book begins with basic systems concepts and moves on to how these simple rules can lead to complex behavior. The author then introduces non-linear systems, followed by pattern formation, and networks and information flow in systems. Later chapters cover the thermodynamics of complex systems, dynamical patterns that arise in networks, and how game theory can serve as a framework for decision making. The text is interspersed with both philosophical and quantitative arguments, and each chapter ends with questions and prompts that help readers make more connections. “The text provides a useful overview of complex systems, with enough detail to allow a reader unfamiliar with the topic to understand the basics. The book stands out for its comprehensiveness and approachability. It will be particularly useful as a text for introductory physics courses. Tranquillo’s strength is in delivering a vast amount of information in a succinct manner.... A reader can find information quickly and efficiently—that is, in my opinion, the book’s greatest value.” (Stefani Crabtree, Physics Today)

Book Designing Complexity The Methodology and Practice of Systems Oriented Design

Download or read book Designing Complexity The Methodology and Practice of Systems Oriented Design written by Birger Sevaldson and published by Common Ground Research Networks. This book was released on 2022-11-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most pressing issues of our time: How can we design for, with, and in service of the complex world we live in? How can we be useful as designers in a rapidly changing world due to technological, political, and social processes, as well as climate change and nature destruction? Designers have some beneficial skills for planning with complex systems in mind, yet some old habits need to be overcome. Design's traditional purpose and role has been to solve problems, find order, organize, and simplify. Yet, the concept of designing complexity goes against these established beliefs because complexity cannot be designed away. So, instead, we present ways to live with, influence, and benefit from complex systems. There is no one "right" way presented in this book. Instead, many experiences, approaches, and perspectives are collected and presented. The process this book offers is a methodology called Systems Oriented Design (SOD). SOD is a design methodology and practice primarily geared toward understanding and working with complex systems. Several systems theories influence it, yet it remains true to its origin, the core of designing. SOD is a living and adaptable methodology. Though it is based on design thinking and design methodology, it is easily adapted and applied by anybody working with complex change processes.
