Book excerpt: Breast cancer is the second deadly cancer for women; for more efficiency and an early detection, the biomedical field need new systems that should be safe, comfortable, and sensible. The medical field already has its methods to detect breast cancer. In this chapter, a new ultra-wide band (UWB) planar antenna is presented for microwave imaging, the antenna is designed to operate in a frequency band from 2.9-10.8GHz. The antenna was designed to be adaptable for multi-viewing imaging due to it simple form, low cost and ease to be manufactured. The simulation results of the new ultra large band antenna and a performance comparison with other UWB antennas. We also offer a circular miniature printed antenna that satisfies the UWB characteristics in terms of bandwidth and reflection coefficient. This antenna is intended for a system for detecting malignant tumors by microwave imaging. The antenna made has a patch on a FR-4 type substrate with Œμr = 4,3, thickness h =1.575 mm and dimensions ls = 25 mm, and ws = 25 mm. A rectangular slot is inserted on the radiating element ensuring its miniaturization. The latter is powered by a microstrip line width wm with matching impedance at 50 Ohm.

They have been widely employed in short-range communication applications and large-bandwidth handheld devices. As part of the system, the UWB antenna plays an extremely important role. Due to the trend towards integrated printed circuits, co-planar waveguide technology is a feasible solution for designing the UWB antenna.This thesis focuses on designing a UWB co-planar waveguide antenna with a band-stop filter. This band-stop filter offers rejection to unwanted frequencies in the range of the operating band in order to avoid unnecessary interference from other communication applications and improve its own system's performance. In addition, it can divide the whole wide band into a few sub-bands. This will create more flexibility for practical applications.The professional full-wave field solver software package CST Microwave Studio is used as the analysis tool to obtain the performances of this antenna. It operates from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz with a VSWR 2 in the pass bands, and a VSWR 2 in the stop bands. The selected frequencies demonstrate nearly omni-directional characteristics in radiation patterns. Comparing with other published UWB antenna designs, relatively reasonable group delay results are achieved. Measurements on a fabricated prototype validate the design approach.

Studies have been undertaken covering the areas of UWB fundamentals and antenna theory. UWB wireless technology is being considered as the solution to overcome data rate bottlenecks in the wireless communications and applications. UWB is able to achieve high data transmission rates because it transmits data over a very large spectrum of frequencies from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz (7.5 GHz). Consequently, it provides many challenges for design in the communications arena, including antenna design. The main objective of this thesis is to study, design, analyze and implement novel UWB low profile printed patch antennas that satisfy UWB technology requirements. Several techniques are used for optimal UWB bandwidth performance of the UWB antenna designs in this thesis. The undertaken thesis focuses on planar antennas printed on PCBs. Therefore, this research introduces novel five designs of microstrip-fed, small, low-profile, printed microstrip UWB antennas using different bandwidth-enhancement techniques to satisfy UWB bandwidth. According to their geometrical shapes, they can be classified into two types: the first types are stepped UWB antennas which are namely: a stepped-trapezoidal patch antenna and a trimmed notch-cut patch antenna. The second ones are beveled UWB antennas which are namely: an elliptical patch antenna, a double-beveled patch antenna, and a band-rejected elliptical patch antenna. It has been demonstrated numerically and experimentally that the proposed antennas are suitable for UWB systems. They can provide satisfactory frequency domain performance, including ultra-wide bandwidth with nearly omni-directional radiation patterns, relatively flat gain and very good radiation efficiency. These features make them very suitable for UWB communications and applications, such as wireless personal area networks (WPANs) applications.

Abstract: This thesis presents the designs of Ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antennas, textile monopole antennas and transparent UWB textile antennas using planar technology for body-centric wireless communications (BCWC). A planar antenna designed using offset-fed and slotted ground plane to extend the operating bandwidth for the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM)band and UWB is proposed. Results show that the antenna can achieve a bandwidth from 2.38 to 14.5 GHz with omni-directional radiation patterns in the E-plane. Agroup of nine planar UWB monopole antennas using different radiator shapes such as triangle, rectangle, square, annual ring, circle, horizontal ellipse, vertical ellipse, pentagon and hexagon for BCWC is studied using computer simulation and measurement. Results show that the monopole antenna having a vertical-elliptical-shape radiator has a relatively better performance than other monopole antennas. Three textile antennas fabricated on fabric materials are studied. The first design is a triple-band textile antenna for wireless-local-area network (WLAN) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) wireless communication applications. The radiator is composed of two branches and a short stub to generate the resonances at about 2.45, 3.5 and 5.5 GHz, respectively. Simulated and measured results show that the three frequency bands can be set independently. The second design is an UWB antenna consisting of a circular radiator, a tapered feed line and a slotted ground plane. Results show that the antenna can achieve a bandwidth of 3 to 12 GHz. The third design is a compact belt-loop UWB antenna with microstrip-fed. The antenna has a simple elliptical-shaped radiator, a three-step staircase on both sides of the feed line and a slot on the ground plane. It has a very compactsize of 1140=440 mm2and can still achieve a bandwidth of 3.1 to 12.8 GHz. To emulate the on-body conditions, the two UWB antennas are studied in the bending and crumpling conditions due to the curvature of human body. Results show that both UWB textile antennas have quite stable performances throughout the UWB band. The two UWB textile antennas are re-designed using a transparent conductive film (TCF)as the radiator and ground plane on fabric substrate. Results show that the measured reflection coefficients of transparent antennas agree well with the simulated results. However, the measured radiation patterns have large discrepancies with the simulated results, which are mainly due to the uncertain electric properties of TCF in radio frequency. Results show that the antennas have a better performance, in terms ofbandwidth, peak gain and radiation efficiency, than those of other transparent antennas studied before, making our proposed antennas suitable for body-centric wireless communications.
