Book excerpt: Over the last decades an ever growing demand for wireless localization systems for many different indoor and outdoor application scenarios could be observed. Applications range from crane and fork-lift positioning to RFID-like asset tracking and access control and many more. Especially indoor applications show severe performance degradation due to heavy multipath effects. Since the resolution of wireless localization systems for all kinds of modulation techniques is proportional to the applied signal bandwidth, systems using ultra-wideband signals offer an excellent potential for accurate indoor positioning. With the accredited bandwidth for UWB systems, an accuracy in the range of a few centimeters is possible. This thesis presents the analysis and design of a pulsed frequency modulated ultra-wideband system for high precision local positioning. Up to now, all commercial available systems are based on the usage of very narrow pulses to generate ultra-wideband signals. To overcome typical limitations of the pure impulse UWB technology, a novel system concept is presented in this work. It combines pulse technology with frequency modulated continuous wave radar technology by chopping the FMCW signal into short pulses. On the one hand this fulfills the UWB regulation requirements, and on the other hand precise control of the signal shape is given for the whole bandwidth. This allows the use of advanced synchronization and distance measurement approaches. The main emphasis of this work is the investigation and realization of this pulsed frequency modulated UWB positioning system. The PFM-UWB system is based on a well-known LPR system, which is extended to an UWB system. Theoretical calculations, simulations and measurements are used to define the system and evaluate its performance. With an implemented demonstrator system, a high accuracy in dense multipath indoor environments can be achieved. Conclusive measurements, that demonstrate the abilities of the developed positioning system, round off this work.

Book excerpt: Today’s booming expanse of personal wireless radio communications is a rich source of new challenges for the designer of the underlying enabling te- nologies. Personal communication networks are designed from a fundam- tally different perspective than broadcast service networks, such as radio and television. While the focus of the latter is on reliability and user comfort, the emphasis of personal communication devices is on throughput and mobility. However, because the wireless channel is a shared transmission medium with only very limited resources, a trade-off has to be made between mobility and the number of simultaneous users in a con?ned geographical area. Accord- 1 ing to Shannon’s theorem on channel capacity, the overall data throughput of a communication channel bene?ts from either a linear increase of the tra- mission bandwidth, or an (equivalent) exponential increase in signal quality. Consequently, it is more bene?cial to think in terms of channel bandwidth than it is to pursue a high transmission power. All the above elements are embodied in the concept of spatial ef?ciency. By describing the throughput of a system 2 in terms of bits/s/Hz/m , spatial ef?ciency takes into account that the use of a low transmission power reduces the operational range of a radio transmission, and as such enables a higher reuse rate of the same frequency spectrum.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Three main elements for an indoor positioning and navigation system design are the signal structure, the signal processing algorithm and the digital and RF prototype hardware. This thesis focuses on the design and development of RF prototype hardware. The signal structure being used in the precise positioning system discussed in this thesis is a Multicarrier-Ultra Wideband (MC-UWB) type signal structure. Unavailability of RF modules suitable for MC-UWB based systems, led to design and development of custom RF transmitter and receiver modules which can be used for extensive field testing. The lack of RF design guidelines for multicarrier positioning systems that operate over fractional bandwidth ranging from 10% to 25% makes the RF design challenging as the RF components are stressed using multicarrier signal in a way not anticipated by the designers. This thesis, first presents simulation based performance evaluation of impulse radio based and multicarrier based indoor positioning systems. This led to an important revelation that multicarrier based positioning system is preferred over impulse radio based positioning systems. Following this, ADS simulations for a direct upconversion transmitter and a direct downconversion receiver, using multicarrier signal structure is presented. The thesis will then discuss the design and performance of the 24% fractional bandwidth RF prototype transmitter and receiver custom modules. This optimized 24% fractional bandwidth RF design, under controlled testing environment demonstrates positioning accuracy improvement by 2-4 times over the initial 11% fractional bandwidth non-optimized RF design. The thesis will then present the results of various indoor wireless tests using the optimized RF prototype modules which led to better understanding of the issues in a field deployable indoor positioning system.

Book excerpt: Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication has emerged as a very promising technology for short-range wireless applications, including high-speed multimedia transmissions and sensor networks. UWB system designs involve many different aspects covering analog and digital processing, channel estimation and modeling, and modulation and demodulation. Although UWB still faces many challenges, significant progress has been made to commercialize UWB systems. This thesis focus on schemes to improve the performance and to lower the complexity of the UWB physical layer. We first propose a frequency-hopped multi-band UWB system structure for higher throughput with better inter-symbol interference (ISI) immunity. This system is analyzed and compared to a single-band system. Pulse overlapping causes inter-pulse interference and may limit the system performance, especially in dense multipath environments. We then build a mathematical model with pulse overlapping considered and investigate the optimum linear RAKE receiver structure in such situation. The analysis is further is extended to systems that employ a prerake diversity combining scheme, in more realistic channel environments. The prerake scheme shifts RAKE receivers' related signal processing needs to the transmitter side and helps combat narrow-band interference. To lower complexity, we develop a decision-directed autocorrelation (DDA) receiver, which offers more effective multipath energy capture at a lower complexity than the conventional RAKE receiver structures. Compared with transmit-reference receivers, the proposed DDA methods can considerably lower the noise level in the self-derived template waveform by operating in an adaptive decision-directed mode, thus improving the overall detection performance. There is little loss in energy efficiency since no reference pilots are required during adaptation. Finally, we propose a hybrid modulation method that enables a heterogeneous network structure where users can flexibly choose a coherent RAKE receiver or a transmit-reference receiver structure. While neither type of receiver sacrifices performance loss by enabling the heterogeneous structure, the coherent RAKE receivers enjoy great performance advantages when further combined with forward error correction and iterative decoding methods. Throughout the thesis, theoretical performance analysis is always presented along with corroborating simulations.

Book excerpt: Applications like sensor networks, medical monitoring, and asset tracking have led to a demand for energy-efficient and low-cost wireless transceivers. These types of applications typically require low effective data rates, thus providing an opportunity to employ simple modulation schemes and aggressive duty-cycling. Due to their inherently duty-cycled nature, pulse-based Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems are amenable to low-power operation by shutting off circuitry during idle mode between pulses. Furthermore, the use of non-coherent UWB signaling greatly simplifies both transmitter and receiver implementations, offering additional energy savings. This thesis presents an all-digital transmitter designed for a non-coherent pulsed UWB system. By exploiting relaxed center frequency tolerances in non-coherent wideband communication, the transmitter synthesizes UWB pulses from an energy efficient, single-ended digital ring oscillator. Dual capacitively-coupled digital power amplifiers (PAs) are used in tandem to generate bipolar phase modulated pulses for spectral scrambling purposes. By maintaining opposite common modes at the output of these PAs during idle mode (i.e. when no pulses are being transmitted), low frequency turn-on and turn-off transients typically associated with single-ended digital circuits driving single-ended antennas are attenuated by up to 12dB. Furthermore, four level digital pulse shaping is employed to attenuate RF side lobes by up to 20dB. The resulting dual power amplifiers achieve FCC compliant operation in the 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5GHz IEEE 802.15.4a bands without the use of any off-chip filters or large passive components. The transmitter is fabricated in a 90nm CMOS process and requires a core area of 0.07mm2. The entirely digital architecture consumes zero static bias current, resulting in an energy efficiency of 17.5pJ/pulse at data rates up to 15.6Mbps.
