Book Design Fabrication and Characterization of Terahertz Quantum well Photodetectors

Download or read book Design Fabrication and Characterization of Terahertz Quantum well Photodetectors written by Shengxi Huang (S.M.) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz) photodetectors are important in the fully exploration and development of electromagnetic spectrum. However, a fast and sensitive THz photodetector ready for array integration is not available. A THz Quantum-well Photodetector (QWP) has the properties of being fast, sensitive, low-noise, and narrow-band. It is promising for large-array integration for THz imaging. In addition, a THz QWP-LED (Light-Emitting Diode) can upconvert the THz to NIR radiation and useful for THz imaging in Focal-Plane Array (FPA). In this thesis project, the theory of the intersubband transition and carrier transport in a THz QWP is studied. The designe, fabrication, measurement-system buildup, and characterization are performed. In addition, the design and fabrication process of THz QWP-LED are also carried out. Such devices have potential applications in many fields such as biology, medication and security.

Book Characterization of Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors by Analysis of Noise Spectral Density

Download or read book Characterization of Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors by Analysis of Noise Spectral Density written by Lisa Kore and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Three quantum well infrared photodetectors are characterized utilizing noise spectral density and current-voltage measurements taken at a variety of temperatures and biases. Though all devices were fabricated using the GaAs/InGaAs material system, each has a unique morphology. D1 had three different quantum wells per period and 20 periods. D2 had one type of quantum well and 10 periods. D3 had one type of quantum well, 5 periods, and asymmetric barriers. Measurement temperatures for D1 ranged between 80 K and 180 K with bias values for each temperature between zero and 35 mA. For D2 and D3 measurement temperatures ranged between 80 K and 125 K with bias values for each temperature between zero and 10 mA. Utilizing models for thermionic emission current and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling current the current-voltage characteristic of each device was compared with the theory. The thermionic emission model did well for all devices at low bias. The tunneling model did well for all devices at high bias. In the middle range of biases D1 was underestimated by the models, D3 was overestimated by the models, and D2 was modeled well by a sum of the two models.

Book Design of a Voltage Tunable Broadband Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector

Download or read book Design of a Voltage Tunable Broadband Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector written by Atakan Konukbay and published by . This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to design a quantum well infrared detector with tunable spectral bandwidth. The tunability of the bandwidth is achieved by using the linear Stark effect for the ground to first excited state transition in an asymmetric quantum well. The position of the absorption peak is dependent on the direction of the electric field, and therefore it can be either blue or red shifted by changing the direction of the field. If two identical asymmetric quantum wells are arranged opposite each other, we can obtain both the blue and red shift for either direction of the bias. This method can produce broader peaks with tunable bandwidths proportional to the applied field. A program was developed to calculate the energy levels and wavefunctions of an arbitrary quantum well. The program was used to design a step quantum well capable of detecting infrared in the 8-12 micrometers band. The validity of the approach was verified by comparison with experimental data and found to have a good agreement. The designed step well was used to create a tunable bandwidth detector. The analysis showed that the bandwidth could be tuned to more than twice the peak width. The numerical simulation indicates the possibility of manufacturing a tunable bandwidth infrared detector by using step quantum wells.

Book Characterization and Analysis of a Multicolor Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector

Download or read book Characterization and Analysis of a Multicolor Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents analysis and characterization of performance of a newly designed, multicolor quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP). Specifically, it focuses on a detector capable of detecting infrared emissions in the near infrared (NIR), mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR), and long-wavelength infrared (LWIR). Through photocurrent spectroscopy and performance analysis, this prototype detector can be classified and prepared for possible future use within the U.S. Armed Forces. Certain military applications require a highly accurate, reliable, sensitive, and multispectral infrared detector to identify targets and ensure mission success. By designing and fabricating a multicolor quantum well infrared photodetector, simultaneous detection of targets in the near infrared, mid-wavelength infrared and long-wavelength infrared is possible using only one detector. In addition, power and cooling requirements for quantum well infrared detectors makes them suitable for use in the field.
