Book Design Equation for Side Resistance of Drilled Shafts in Cohesionless Soils

Download or read book Design Equation for Side Resistance of Drilled Shafts in Cohesionless Soils written by Peter Irey and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep foundations, such as drilled shafts, transfer axial compression loads into the ground through side resistance and base (or tip) resistance. In cohesionless soils, such as sands and gravels, side resistance is analyzed as the frictional shear strength developed at the soil-shaft interface. In the study described herein a new empirical equation is proposed for calculating side resistance in cohesionless soils. This new approach takes the basic information typically available to foundation engineers, namely Standard Penetration Test N-values and the state of effective stress at various depths in the ground, to calculate the side resistance coefficient. The advantage of this approach is that it accounts properly for variations in soil strength and state of stress, but involves fewer intermediate calculation steps than the approach recommended in the current FHWA drilled shaft manual.

Download or read book Drilled Shaft Manual Structural analysis and design for lateral loading by written by Lymon C. Reese and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drilled shafts have been used on a limited scale for many years as an alternative to driven piles in a variety of foundation problems. However, uncertainty about the behavior of the drilled shaft has forestalled widespread adoption. The subject package, by Dr. Lymon C. Reese of the University of Texas, is intended for use by bridge engineers, geotechnical engineers, and builders of pile foundations. The manual contains rational procedures and practical guidelines for the design and construction of drilled shaft foundations. Volume I presents a rational design procedure for drilled shafts under axial loading and includes guidelines on construction methods, inspection, load testing, specifications, and cost estimates. Volume II presents alternative methods for computing the response of the shaft to lateral loading and presents the structural design of the shaft for axial and/or lateral loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-of-a-kind coverage on the fundamentals of foundation analysis and design Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations is a significant new resource to the engineering principles used in the analysis and design of both shallow and deep, load-bearing foundations for a variety of building and structural types. Its unique presentation focuses on new developments in computer-aided analysis and soil-structure interaction, including foundations as deformable bodies. Written by the world's leading foundation engineers, Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations covers everything from soil investigations and loading analysis to major types of foundations and construction methods. It also features: * Coverage on computer-assisted analytical methods, balanced with standard methods such as site visits and the role of engineering geology * Methods for computing the capacity and settlement of both shallow and deep foundations * Field-testing methods and sample case studies, including projects where foundations have failed, supported with analyses of the failure * CD-ROM containing demonstration versions of analytical geotechnical software from Ensoft, Inc. tailored for use by students in the classroom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devised with a focus on problem solving, Geotechnical Problem Solving bridges the gap between geotechnical and soil mechanics material covered in university Civil Engineering courses and the advanced topics required for practicing Civil, Structural and Geotechnical engineers. By giving newly qualified engineers the information needed to apply their extensive theoretical knowledge, and informing more established practitioners of the latest developments, this book enables readers to consider how to confidently approach problems having thought through the various options available. Where various competing solutions are proposed, the author systematically leads through each option, weighing up the benefits and drawbacks of each, to ensure the reader can approach and solve real-world problems in a similar manner The scope of material covered includes a range of geotechnical topics, such as soil classification, soil stresses and strength and soil self-weight settlement. Shallow and deep foundations are analyzed, including special articles on laterally loaded piles, retaining structures including MSE and Tieback walls, slope and trench stability for natural, cut and fill slopes, geotechnical uncertainty, and geotechnical LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design).
