Book excerpt: Social robots have significantly advanced in capabilities and availability, gradually becoming part of everyday life. Their new interactive features are relevant to the struggling care sector. As Western societies age, the demand for care services rises, yet the workforce does not grow at the same rate. This book explores the potential of social robots to support the workforce and enhance the well-being of residents in care homes. Using a socio-informatics approach, this research investigates how residents and caregivers interact with social robots, examines and facilitates their appropriation, and provides insights into the development of the robots' software and hardware. The research and development were carried out collaboratively in care homes with the people who work and live there. The findings indicate that social robots can be beneficial in care homes. They broaden the options for social care workers and, when integrated into daily routines, can provide brief respite periods. Additionally, they positively impact residents by engaging them in cognitive and physical activities. However, the robots can only assist, and not replace, care workers.

Especially for developments with a high societal impact like robots in health and care settings, the authors discuss not only technology, design and usage but also ethical aspects. Thus this book creates both a compendium and a guideline, helping to navigate the design space for future developments in social robotics.

In the case of Human-Robot Interaction, the emotional design can help to elicit (e.g., pleasurable) or prevent (e.g., unpleasant) emotional/affective reactions/responses. This book gives a practical introduction to emotional design in human-robot interaction and supports designers with knowledge and research tools to help them take design decisions based on a User-Centred Design approach. It should also be useful to people interested in design processes, even if not directly related to the design of social robots but, instead, to other technology-based artefacts. Book excerpt: As service robots are intended to serve at close range and cater to the needs of human users, Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) has been identified as one of the most difficult and critical challenges in research for the success of service robotics. In particular, HRI requires highly complex software integration to enable a robot to communicate in a manner that is natural and intuitive to the human user. An initial service robot prototype was developed by integrating several existing research projects at the University of Auckland and deployed in a user study. The result showed the need for more HRI abilities to interactively engage the user and perform task-specific interactions. To solve these requirements and deal with relevant issues in software integration, I proposed a design methodology which guides HRI designers from design to implementation. In the methodology, Unified Modelling Language (UML) and an extension, UMLi, were used for modelling a robot's interactive behaviour and communicating the interaction designs within a multidisciplinary group. Notably, new design patterns for HRI were proposed to facilitate communication of necessary cues that a robot needs to perceive, or express during an interaction. The methodology also emphasises an iterative process to discover and design around limitations of existing software technologies. In addition, a component-based development approach was adapted to further help HRI designers in handling the complexity in software integration by modularising the robot's functionalities. As a case study, I applied this methodology to implement a second prototype, Charlie. In a user study with older people (65+) in an aged care facility in New Zealand, the robot was able to detect and recognise a human user in 59 percent of the interactions that happened. Over the two-week period of the study, the robot performed robustly six hours daily and provided assistance in measurement of a range of vital signs. The interaction patterns proposed, were also validated for future reuse. The results indicate the validity of the methodology in developing robust and interactive service applications in real world environments.

The complexity of the battlefield of the future presents its own problems. The variety of robotic systems and the almost infinite number of possible military missions create a dilemma for researchers who wish to predict human-robot interactions (HRI) performance in future environments. Human-Robot Interactions in Future Military Operations provides an opportunity for scientists investigating military issues related to HRI to present their results cohesively within a single volume. The issues range from operators interacting with small ground robots and aerial vehicles to supervising large, near-autonomous vehicles capable of intelligent battlefield behaviors. The ability of the human to 'team' with intelligent unmanned systems in such environments is the focus of the volume. As such, chapters are written by recognized leaders within their disciplines and they discuss their research in the context of a broad-based approach. Therefore the book allows researchers from differing disciplines to be brought up to date on both theoretical and methodological issues surrounding human-robot interaction in military environments. The overall objective of this volume is to illuminate the challenges and potential solutions for military HRI through discussion of the many approaches that have been utilized in order to converge on a better understanding of this relatively complex concept. The program addressed HRI and teaming for both aerial and ground robotic assets in conjunction with the U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Research and Development Center (TARDEC) and the Aviation and Missile Development Center (AMRDEC) The purpose of the program was to understand HRI issues in order to develop and evaluate technologies to improve HRI battlefield performance for Future Combat Systems (FCS). The work within this volume goes beyond the research results to encapsulate the ATO's findings and discuss them in a broader context in order to understand both their military and civilian implications. For this reason, scientists conducting related research have contributed additional chapters to widen the scope of the original research boundaries.
