The mode degeneracy is fundamental to this design technique. The first design introduces a structurally symmetric dual-mode cavity pseudo-elliptic band-pass filter, which has been implemented by only asymmetric structures so far. It is also used to shed light on the concepts of positive and negative coupling in dual-mode filters. A novel iris coupling structure is investigated allowing negative coupling coefficients required for certain polarizations of modes in dual- mode rectangular cavities. A 4th order dual-mode band-pass filter is designed at 11 GHz with a bandwidth of 200 MHz, an in-band return loss of 20dB and two transmission zeros at normalized frequencies of ±1.6. The filter makes use of the negative coupling property of the iris for inter-resonance coupling of the modes of horizontal orientation inside the cavity. The desired performance of the filter was achieved by the initial design without any optimization. The second design is especially convenient when temperature compensation is of prime concern. A direct design technique is developed and demonstrated with computer simulation and measurement in circular waveguide technology on a 4th order filter with a bandwidth of 50 MHz at 11 GHz, an in-band return loss of 20 dB and two normalized transmission zeros at ±1.5.

A conventional bandpass filter works under single dominant resonant modes of a few cascaded transmission line resonators and its operating bandwidth is widened via enhanced coupling between the adjacent resonators. However, this traditional approach needs an extremely high coupling degree of coupled-lines while producing a narrow upper stopband between the dominant and harmonic bands. As a sequence, the desired dominant passband is restricted to an extent less than 60% in fractional bandwidth. To circumvent these issues and break with the tradition, a filter based on the multiple resonant modes was initially introduced in 2000 by the first author of this book. Based on this novel concept, a new class of wideband filters with fractional bandwidths larger than 60% has been successfully developed so far. This book, presents and characterizes a variety of multi-mode resonators with stepped-impedance or loaded-stub configurations using the matured transmission line theory for development of advanced microwave wideband filters.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the conception, design and implementation of new topologies of multimodal microwave resonators and filters, using a combination of uniplanar technologies such as coplanar waveguide (CPW), coplanar strips (CPS) and slotlines. The term "multimodal" refers to uniplanar circuits in which the two fundamental modes of the CPW propagate (the even and the odd mode). By using both modes of the CPW, it is possible to achieve added functions, such as additional transmission zeros to increase the rejection, or to attenuate harmonic frequencies to improve the out-of-band rejection. Moreover, it is demonstrated that by using multimodal circuits, it is possible to reduce the length of of a conventional filter up to 80%. In addition to bandpass filters, new topologies of compact band-stop filters are developed. The proposed band-stop filters make use of slow-wave resonators to decrease the total area of the filters and achieve compact topologies. This work also addresses the development of synthesis techniques for each multimodal filter. The design equations were obtained from generalized multimodal circuits available in the literature, which have been adapted for each particular case and modeled as basic filter components, such as immitance inverters or lumped elements. By using the proposed synthesis equations, it is possible to design filters with a desired response and relative bandwidth. The use of the proposed synthesis enables a fast analysis and design of multimodal filters using circuit simulators. As an added feature, several reconfigurable and tunable filter topologies were demonstrated, using active devices (PIN diodes and varactors) or RF-MEMS. These new topologies demonstrate the flexibility of multimodal circuits. For the RF-MEMS-based tunable filters, different capacitive and ohmic switches were designed, fabricated and measured. As an example of the additional degrees of freedom using of RF-MEMS and multimodal CPW circuits, a reconfigurable filter using RF-MEMS switchable air-bridges as a reconfiguration device has been demonstrated in this work for the first time.

Book excerpt: Bandpass microwave filters are often modeled as a set of coupled discrete and localized resonators. This model is adequate in the narrow-band case. It, however, fails to describe accurately compact structures where stray couplings can be strong. To address this problem, a new view is proposed in this thesis. Instead of basing the model on localized discrete resonances, we start by constructing a model that is based on the global resonances of the structure. These are the resonances that the ports see and emerge when the entire structure is treated as a single unit. The resulting circuit, the transversal circuit, is universal. It is valid for any coupled resonator filter. The circuit is used in optimization of compact and ultra wideband suspended stripline filters and excellent results were obtained. In order to relate the global-eigen modes model to the conventional model, the issue of representation of microwave filters is investigated in detail. It is shown that a microwave filter can be represented by an infinite number of similar coupling matrices by using different modes as basis. According to this new view, a similarity transformation in microwave coupled resonator filters is interpreted as a change of basis. Two circuits that are related by a similarity transformation represent the same filter structure by using different sets of modes as basis. These conclusions were exploited in establishing a design theory for filters with dual-mode cavities. The new theory leads to direct and accurate design techniques that need no, or minimal, optimization. No tuning is used in the CAD steps. Tuning may only be required to account for manufacturing tolerances. A new tuning configuration is described and validated by computer simulation. A novel dual-mode filter with improved quality factor and reduced sensitivity is developed and designed within the same approach. The filter is fabricated and measured and excellent results are achieved. The same design methodology was used to introduce a new class of dual-mode dual-band microwave filters with improved sensitivity. It is also shown that canonical dual-mode filters can be designed within the same view with minimal local optimization of the input cavity.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is the design and synthesis of tunable bandpass filters at microwave frequencies using planar patch resonators. A methodology for the design and synthesis of tunable patch filters is developed and applied to two filters with triangular and circular topologies. The methodology provides techniques to extract the coupling scheme that models the filter behavior and the necessary equations for calculating the corresponding coupling matrix. Then, the theoretical filter response resulting from the analysis of the coupling matrix coefficients is compared to the results of complete simulations. The complete simulations combine the results of the 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulation of the filter layout with the results of the electrical simulation of the tuning devices, represented by their lumped elements equivalent model. This allows the correct model of the tuning effect and the definition of the tuning possibilities and limits. In order to validate the methodology, the tunable patch filters are fabricated using Microwave Integrated Circuit (MIC) technology on flexible substrates. The minimum dimensions are greater than 0.5 mm, ensuring a low cost fabrication process.
