Book Design and Performance of a Soft X ray Interferometer for Ultra high Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy

Download or read book Design and Performance of a Soft X ray Interferometer for Ultra high Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fourier Transform Soft X-ray spectrometer (FT-SX) has been designed and is under construction for the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a branch of beamline 9.3.2. The spectrometer is a novel soft x-ray interferometer designed for ultra-high resolution (theoretical resolving power E/[delta]E[approx]10[sup 6]) spectroscopy in the photon energy region of 60-120 eV. This instrument is expected to provide experimental results which sensitively test models of correlated electron processes in atomic molecular physics. The design criteria and consequent technical challenges posed by the short wavelengths of x-rays and desired resolving power are discussed. The fundamental and practical aspects of soft x-ray interferometry are also explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helium, with its two electrons and one nucleus, is a three-body system. One of the models for investigating correlated electron motion in this system is autoionization, produced via double excitation of the electrons. Predictions about the autoionization spectrum of helium have differed from each other and from preliminary experimental data. However, previous experiments have not been able to distinguish among the theoretical predictions because their energy resolution is not high enough to resolve the narrow linewidths of quasi-forbidden peaks and the resonances that appear in the highest excited states. Consequently, a team of researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have embarked on a project for building a high-resolution Fourier-Transform Soft X-ray (or VUV) interferometer (FTSX) to provide definitive data to answer remaining questions about the autoionization spectrum of helium. The design and construction of this interferometer is described in detail below, including the use of a flexure stage to provide the large path length difference necessary for high resolution measurements, the manufacture of x-ray beamsplitters, a description of the software, and the solution to the problems of stick-slip, vibration, and alignment. Current progress of its development is also described, as well as future goals.

Book Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics

Download or read book Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics written by T. Miyahara and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes contain 365 of the 505 papers presented at the VUV-11 Conference, held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, from August 27th to September 1st 1995. The papers are divided into three sections: atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid state spectroscopy and instrumentation and technological applications. New aspects presented were both quantitative and qualitative improvements in fluorescence spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The fluorescence data are complementary to those of photoemission in a sense but they appear to open up a new method to analyze the optical excitation and relaxation processes. The application of magnetic circular dichroism has proved to be useful not only in analyzing the electronic structures of magnetic materials but also in practical applications to material engineering as found in experiments combined with photoelectron microscopy. Excellent developments in applications are only found in the field of surface photochemistry, where the technique of etching using VUV light has been appreciably refined. Although the majority of distinctive scientific features in the VUV-11 Conference have been brought about by the application of synchrotron radiation, experiments using a different type of light source appear to have progressed steadily. This is evident in the studies of plasma radiation.

Book Fourier Transform Interferometry

Download or read book Fourier Transform Interferometry written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic Michelson interferometer, as used for Fourier transform spectroscopy, is analyzed in this report. The principles of operation are explained, and its inherent limitations are shown. An original analysis of apodization, for the case of an off-axis detector field-of-view, is included in an appendix. Practical limitations of real instruments are also analyzed. These include misalignment, wavefront error, and noise sources. In another appendix, the use of retroreflectors in the interferometer is analyzed, and the effect of lateral displacement of a retroreflector is compared to that of mirror tilt in a plane-mirror interferometer. Special attention is given to sources of noise in the Fourier transform spectroradiometer, and expressions are derived for noise-equivalent radiance from these sources. The performance of a Fourier transform spectrometer is compared with that of a filter-wheel spectrometer having the same optical aperture and spectral resolution. The mathematical treatments in this report are sufficiently detailed that they should be easy to follow, once the optical principles are grasped. Some numerical calculations are included, based on the specifications of the proposed GOES High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder (GHIS).

Book Design of a High Resolution Spatial Heterodyne Interferometer

Download or read book Design of a High Resolution Spatial Heterodyne Interferometer written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several new spatial heterodyne interferometers were evaluated using ray tracing analysis. A spherical grating interferometer was examined and found to have nonlinear fringe patterns that are difficult to interpret. A new plane grating interferometer was designed, built and tested using a visible light laser as the source. The new design uses two mirrors and a single, planar diffraction grating to divide and recombine incident collimated light. The zero and first order ray paths recombine to produce a high contrast, linear, interference fringe pattern suitable for Fourier Transform analysis. The instrument has the potential to perform extremely high resolution spectroscopy in the FUV and EUV portions of the electromagnetic spectrum with resolving powers on the order of 10 6. High resolution analysis of emission line profiles should enable an observer to more accurately determine atmospheric temperature and density profiles. The simple, lightweight and compact instrument has no moving parts and is suitable for remote sensing from sounding rocket or satellite platforms.

Book A Novel Cryogenic Fabry P rot Interferometer for Far infrared Astronomy

Download or read book A Novel Cryogenic Fabry P rot Interferometer for Far infrared Astronomy written by Ian Veenendaal and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continued improvement in the sensitivity of far-infrared detectors has caused scientists to reconsider the design of cryogenically cooled instruments which can fully exploit their potential. The SAFARI instrument on the SPICA observatory is one such instrument which will employ a medium resolution grating-based spectrometer, with an optional high-resolution module. While a Martin-Puplett Fourier transform spectrometer was ultimately selected for the high-resolution module, an initial design was a Fabry-P\'{e}rot interferometer This thesis presents the design and performance of a cryogenic, angle-scanned Fabry-P\'{e}rot interferometer for future far-infrared astronomical spectrometers. In addition, multiple custom subcomponents were required in order to characterize the interferometer, including a tunable terahertz line source, a cryogenic diffraction grating monochromator, and a cryogenic, laser-based position metrology system. Novel features of the design were discussed, and the spectral response of the instrument was modelled. Spectral line profiles were verified using specialized calibration line sources.

Book A High Resolution Interferometer for Use with Synchrotron Radiation

Download or read book A High Resolution Interferometer for Use with Synchrotron Radiation written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the first results from a new instrument which is designed to work at very high resolution in the infrared spectral region but whose principles can be used in the vuv/soft-ray region. The instrument is based on an interferometer. For the vuv/soft-xray region the beamsplitting is achieved by wavefront division which takes advantage of the spatial coherence of synchrotron radiation. Normally the highest frequency in the spectrum from an interferometer is determined by the sampling frequency, which has to be at least twice that of the highest frequency in the spectrum. We show that this can be avoided if the spectral range is deliberately restricted by a grating or by the use of an undulator. In this case the interferograms contain a known and restricted range of frequencies which led to an unambiguous assignment during the Fourier processing required to generate the spectrum.

Book Validation of the Design of a High Resolution All reflection Michelson Interferometer for Atmospheric Spectroscopy

Download or read book Validation of the Design of a High Resolution All reflection Michelson Interferometer for Atmospheric Spectroscopy written by Scott M. Carlson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a high resolution Plane Grating All-reflection Michelson Interferometer for ionospheric spectroscopy was analyzed using ray tracing techniques. This interferometer produces an interference pattern whose spatial frequency is wavelength dependent. The instrument is intended for remote observations of the atomic oxygen triplet emission line profile at 1304 A in the thermosphere from sounding rocket or satellite platforms. The device was modeled using the PC-based ray tracing application, DART, and results analyzed through fourier techniques using the PC with Windows version of the Interactive Data Language (IDL). Through these methods, instrument resolution, resolving power, and bandpass were determined. An analysis of the effects of aperture size and shape on instrument performance was also conducted.
