Book excerpt: The powertrain design and control strategies for three representative hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV/PHEVs), a plug-in hybrid passenger car, a plug-in hybrid race car, and a hybrid electric mining truck, have been investigated through the system modeling, simulation and design optimization. First, the pre-transmission gen-set couple Plug-in Series-Parallel Multi-Regime (SPMR) powertrain architecture was selected for PHEV passenger car. Rule-based load following control schemes based on engine optimal control strategy and Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) were used for the operation control of the passenger car PHEV powertrain. Secondly, the rear wheel drive (RWD) post-transmission parallel through road powertrain architecture was selected for race car PHEV. A high level supervisory control system and ECMS control strategy have been developed and implemented through the race car's on-board embedded controller using dSPACE MicroAutobox II. In addition, longitudinal adaptive traction control has been added to the vehicle controller for improved drivability and acceleration performance. At last, the feasibility and benefits of powertrain hybridization for heavy-duty mining truck have been investigated, and three hybrid powertrain architectures, series, parallel and diesel-electric, with weight adjusting propulsion system have been modeled and studied. The research explored the common and distinct characteristics of hybrid electric propulsion system technology for different vehicular applications, and formed the foundation for further research and development.

Book excerpt: Technologies and Approaches to Reducing the Fuel Consumption of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles evaluates various technologies and methods that could improve the fuel economy of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, transit buses, and work trucks. The book also recommends approaches that federal agencies could use to regulate these vehicles' fuel consumption. Currently there are no fuel consumption standards for such vehicles, which account for about 26 percent of the transportation fuel used in the U.S. The miles-per-gallon measure used to regulate the fuel economy of passenger cars. is not appropriate for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which are designed above all to carry loads efficiently. Instead, any regulation of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles should use a metric that reflects the efficiency with which a vehicle moves goods or passengers, such as gallons per ton-mile, a unit that reflects the amount of fuel a vehicle would use to carry a ton of goods one mile. This is called load-specific fuel consumption (LSFC). The book estimates the improvements that various technologies could achieve over the next decade in seven vehicle types. For example, using advanced diesel engines in tractor-trailers could lower their fuel consumption by up to 20 percent by 2020, and improved aerodynamics could yield an 11 percent reduction. Hybrid powertrains could lower the fuel consumption of vehicles that stop frequently, such as garbage trucks and transit buses, by as much 35 percent in the same time frame.

Book excerpt: Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) were introduced in response to rising environmental challenges facing the automotive sector. HEVs combine the benefits of electric vehicles and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, integrating an electrical system (a battery and an electric motor) with an engine to provide improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, while maintaining adequate driving range. By comparison with conventional HEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have larger battery storage systems and can be fully charged via an external electric power source such as the electrical grid. Of the three primary PHEV architectures, power-split architectures tend to provide greater efficiencies than parallel or series systems; however, they also demonstrate more complicated dynamics. Thus, in this research project, the problem of optimizing the component sizes of a power-split PHEV was addressed in an effort to exploit the flexibility of this powertrain system and further improve the vehicle's fuel economy, using a Toyota plug-in Prius as the baseline vehicle. Autonomie software was used to develop a vehicle model, which was then applied to formulate an optimization problem for which the main objective is to minimize fuel consumption over standard driving cycles. The design variables considered were: the engine's maximum power, the number of battery cells and the electric motor's maximum power. The genetic algorithm approach was employed to solve the optimization problem for various drive cycles and an acceptable reduction in fuel consumption was achieved thorough the sizing process. The model was validated against a MapleSim model. This research project successfully delivered a framework that integrates an Autonomie PHEV model and genetic algorithm optimization and can be used to address any HEV parameter optimization problem, with any objective, constraints, design variables and optimization parameters.

The inherent advantages of HEVs are their increased fuel economy, reduced harmful emissions and better vehicle performance. The extent of improvement in fuel economy and vehicle performance greatly depends on selecting optimal component sizes. The complex interaction between the various components makes it difficult to size specific components manually or analytically. So, simulation-based multi-variable design optimization is a possible solution for such kind of system level design problems. The multi-modal, noisy and discontinuous nature of the Hybrid Vehicle design requires the use of derivative-free global algorithms because the derivative-based local algorithms work poorly with such design problems. In this thesis, a Hybrid Vehicle is optimized using various Global Algorithms -- DIviding RECTangles (DIRECT), Simulated Annealing (SA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The objective of this study is to increase the overall fuel economy on a composite of city and highway driving cycle and to improve the vehicle performance. The performance of each algorithm is compared on a six variable hybrid electric vehicle design problem. Powertrain System Analysis Tool (PSAT), a state-of-the-art powertrain simulator, developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment by Argonne National Laboratory is used as the vehicle simulator. Further, a Hybrid algorithm that is a combination of global and local algorithm is developed to improve the convergence of the global algorithms. The hybrid algorithm is tested on two simple mathematical functions to check its efficiency.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the introduction and development of an integrated model-based design and optimization platform to solve the optimal design and optimal control, or hardware and software co-design, problem for hybrid electric propulsion systems. Specifically, the hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric powertrain systems with diesel and natural gas (NG) fueled compression ignition (CI) engines and large Li-ion battery energy storage system (ESS) for propelling a hybrid electric marine vessel are investigated. The combined design and control optimization of the hybrid propulsion system is formulated as a bi-level, nested optimization problem. The lower-level optimization applies dynamic programming (DP) to ensure optimal energy management for each feasible powertrain system design, and the upper-level global optimization aims at identifying the optimal sizes of key powertrain components for the powertrain system with optimized control. Recently, Li-ion batteries became a promising ESS technology for electrified transportation applications. However, these costly Li-ion battery ESSs contribute to a large portion of the powertrain electrification and hybridization costs and suffer a much shorter lifetime compared to other key powertrain components. Different battery performance modelling methods are reviewed to identify the appropriate degradation prediction approach. Using this approach and a large set of experimental data, the performance degradation and life prediction model of LiFePO4 type battery has been developed and validated. This model serves as the foundation for determining the optimal size of battery ESS and for optimal energy management in powertrain system control to achieve balanced reduction of fuel consumption and the extension of battery lifetime. In modelling and design of different hybrid electric marine propulsion systems, the life cycle cost (LCC) model of the cleaner, hybrid propulsion systems is introduced, considering the investment, replacement and operational costs of their major contributors. The costs of liquefied NG (LNG), diesel and electricity in the LCC model are collected from various sources, with a focus on present industrial price in British Columbia, Canada. The greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria air pollutant (CAP) emissions from traditional diesel and cleaner NG-fueled engines with conventional and optimized hybrid electric powertrains are also evaluated. To solve the computational expensive nested optimization problem, a surrogate model-based (or metamodel-based) global optimization method is used. This advanced global optimization search algorithm uses the optimized Latin hypercube sampling (OLHS) to form the Kriging model and uses expected improvement (EI) online sampling criterion to refine the model to guide the search of global optimum through a much-reduced number of sample data points from the computationally intensive objective function. Solutions from the combined hybrid propulsion system design and control optimization are presented and discussed. This research has further improved the methodology of model-based design and optimization of hybrid electric marine propulsion systems to solve complicated co-design problems through more efficient approaches, and demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of the new methods through their applications to tugboat propulsion system design and control developments. The resulting hybrid propulsion system with NG engine and Li-ion battery ESS presents a more economical and environmentally friendly propulsion system design of the tugboat. This research has further improved the methodology of model-based design and optimization of hybrid electric marine propulsion systems to solve complicated co-design problems through more efficient approaches, and demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of the new methods through their applications to tugboat propulsion system design and control developments. Other main contributions include incorporating the battery performance degradation model to the powertrain size optimization and optimal energy management; performing a systematic design and optimization considering LCC of diesel and NG engines in the hybrid electric powertrains; and developing an effective method for the computational intensive powertrain co-design problem.

Book excerpt: The rise in overall powertrain complexity and the stringent performance requirements of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) have elevated the role of its powertrain control strategy to considerable importance. Iterative modeling and simulation form an integral part of the control strategy design process and industry engineers rely on proprietary "legacy" models to rapidly develop and implement control strategies. However, others must initiate new algorithms and models in order to develop production-capable control systems. This thesis demonstrates the development and validation of a charge-sustaining control algorithm for a through-the-road (TTR) parallel hybrid (diesel-electric) powertrain. Some unique approaches used in powertrain-level control of other commercial and prototype vehicles have been adopted to incrementally develop this control strategy. The real-time performance of the control strategy has been analyzed through on-road and chassis dynamometer tests over several standard drive cycles. Substantial quantitative improvements in the overall HEV performance over the stock configuration, including better acceleration and fuel-economy have been achieved.

Book excerpt: Mississippi State University was selected for participation in the EcoCAR 3 Advance Vehicle Technology Competition. The team designed its architecture around the use of two UQM electric motors, and a Weber MPE 850cc turbocharged engine. To combine the three inputs into a singular output a custom gearbox was designed with seven helical gears. The gears were designed to handle the high torque and speeds the vehicle would experience. The use of this custom gearbox allows for a variety of control strategies. By optimizing the torque supplied by each motor, the overall energy consumption of the vehicle could be reduced. Additionally, studies were completed on the engine to understand the effects of injecting water into the engine’s intake manifold at 25% pedal request from 2000-3500 rpm. Overall, every speed showed an optimum at 20% water to fuel ratio, which obtained reductions in brake specific fuel consumption of up to 9.4%.
