Book Design and Optimization of a Small Compressed Air Energy Storage System for Isolated Applications

Download or read book Design and Optimization of a Small Compressed Air Energy Storage System for Isolated Applications written by Hanif SedighNejad and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, a variety of practical and theoretical CAES systems are reviewed in order to show the current status of the available CAES systems. Then a small scale compressed air energy storage for small isolated wind based hybrid energy system is introduced and discussed. In order to develop a cost-effective renewable based hybrid energy system, this research investigates the optimization of each component of the system from the wind turbine to the load to deliver the required energy in the most efficient way. After finding the general control strategy for energy harvesting from the wind, the control strategy based on predictive initial working condition of the air vane motor is investigated through practical tests. A control path is developed using the implemented air motor steady state operation based on its manufacturer datasheet, and it is used to supply a fixed amount of power to the grid. A new criterion for evaluation of different energy storage system with identical power rating and storage capacity is proposed and examined during a case study and the performance of pumped hydro, battery and compressed air energy systems are compared based on the total shortage time and total fuel consumption of backup diesel generators. The Monte Carlo simulation was used in order to regenerate the wind speed data with 10 minute resolution to represent more accurate variable wind speed. The proposed Harvested Energy Index (HEI) showed the ability of energy storage systems with low efficiency in utilizing excess wind energy and reach their storage capacity. Based on the obtained results, a novel general control concept for such systems is proposed and its steady state simulation results are discussed.

Book Design of Optimum Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems

Download or read book Design of Optimum Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressed air energy storage (CAES) power systems are being considered by electric utilities for load-leveling application. Their economic benefit and the extent of premium fuel conservation is dependent on their design. An optimum design approach for CAES is presented. It is based on decomposition of the overall CAES plant/utility grid system into three partially-decoupled subsystems. Technical and economic models of the subsystems are used in a constrained optimization procedure. The constraints are imposed by the physical characteristics of the subsystems, by interaction among the subsystems and by the interfacing requirements imposed by the utility. To illustrate the concepts, models for the subsystem comprising the compressor train, piping, and an aquifer reservoir have been used in the optimization procedure. Results from these studies show that substantial reductions in capital cost and total operating cost can be achieved using optimization techniques.

Book Analysis and Design of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems

Download or read book Analysis and Design of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems written by Jorge Garcia and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important environmental challenge today's society is facing is to reduce the effects of CO2 emissions and global warming. Such an ambitious challenge can only be achieved through a holistic approach, capable of tackling the problem from a multidisciplinary point of view. One of the core technologies called to play a critical role in this approach is the use of energy storage systems. These systems enable, among other things, the balancing of the stochastic behavior of Renewable Sources and Distributed Generation in modern Energy Systems; the efficient supply of industrial and consumer loads; the development of efficient and clean transport; and the development of Nearly-Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) and intelligent cities. Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) consist of two (or more) storage devices with complementary key characteristics, that are able to behave jointly with better performance than any of the technologies considered individually. Recent developments in storage device technologies, interface systems, control and monitoring techniques, or visualization and information technologies have driven the implementation of HESS in many industrial, commercial and domestic applications. This Special Issue focuses on the analysis, design and implementation of hybrid energy storage systems across a broad spectrum, encompassing different storage technologies (including electrochemical, capacitive, mechanical or mechanical storage devices), engineering branches (power electronics and control strategies; energy engineering; energy engineering; chemistry; modelling, simulation and emulation techniques; data analysis and algorithms; social and economic analysis; intelligent and Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems; and so on.), applications (energy systems, renewable energy generation, industrial applications, transportation, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and critical load supply, etc.) and evaluation and performance (size and weight benefits, efficiency and power loss, economic analysis, environmental costs, etc.).

Book Design Optimization of Aquifer Reservoir based Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems

Download or read book Design Optimization of Aquifer Reservoir based Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of a general Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) power system design optimization methodology to the class of CAES plants having aquifer air storage reservoirs is discussed. The resulting procedure incorporates performance and economic models for the aquifer reservoir, wells, piping, and air compression system. Its use allows identification of designs which minimize the subsystem power generation cost (mills/kWh), while satisfying constraints related to the geology, equipment, and utility load curve. The design specification resulting from the optimization procedure includes: land area to be purchased, well depth, number of wells, well spacing, wellbore diameter, main pipeline diameter, required compressor system power and discharge pressure, and required compression time durations for each day of the week. A capital and operating cost summary for the optimum design is a final output of the procedure. The paper reviews the models and constraints incorporated in the optimization procedure. Although the basic framework is well-developed, some refinements or additions to the modeling may be necessary to improve the results; these possibilities are discussed. Results of case studies are included in order to illustrate the power and potential economic impact of the techniques described, to demonstrate some of the economic tradeoffs which occur in the optimal design of aquifer reservoir-based CAES systems, and to show the influence of certain cost parameters.

Book Energy Storage

Download or read book Energy Storage written by Alfred Rufer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will provide the technical community with an overview of the development of new solutions and products that address key topics, including electric/hybrid vehicles, ultrafast battery charging, smart grids, renewable energy (e.g., solar and wind), peak shaving, and reduction of energy consumption. The needs for storage discussed are within the context of changes between the centralized power generation of today and the distributed utility of tomorrow, including the integration of renewable energy sources. Throughout the book, methods for quantitative and qualitative comparison of energy storage means are presented through their energy capacity as well as through their power capability for different applications. The definitions and symbols for energy density and power density are given and relate to the volume and weight of a given system or component. A relatively underdeveloped concept that is crucial to this text is known as the theory of Ragone plots. This theory makes possible the evaluation of the real amount of energy that can possibly release out of a given system, with respect to the level of power dependency chosen for the discharge process. From systems using electrochemical transformations, to classical battery energy storage elements and so-called flow batteries, to fuel cells and hydrogen storage, this book further investigates storage systems based on physical principles (e.g., gravitational potential forces, air compression, and rotational kinetic energy). This text also examines purely electrical systems such as superconductive magnets and capacitors. Another subject of analysis is the presentation of power electronic circuits and architectures that are needed for continuously controllable power flow to and from different storage means. For all systems described, the elementary principles of operation are given as well as the relationships for the quantified storage of energy. Finally, Energy Storage: Systems and Components contains multiple international case studies and a rich set of exercises that serve both students and practicing engineers.
