Book Limits Modeling and Design of High Speed Permanent Magnet Machines

Download or read book Limits Modeling and Design of High Speed Permanent Magnet Machines written by Aleksandar Borisavljevic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing number of applications that require fast-rotating machines; motivation for this thesis comes from a project in which downsized spindles for micro-machining have been researched. The thesis focuses on analysis and design of high-speed PM machines and uses a practical design of a high-speed spindle drive as a test case. Phenomena, both mechanical and electromagnetic, that take precedence in high-speed permanent magnet machines are identified and systematized. The thesis identifies inherent speed limits of permanent magnet machines and correlates those limits with the basic parameters of the machines. The analytical expression of the limiting quantities does not only impose solid constraints on the machine design, but also creates the way for design optimization leading to the maximum mechanical and/or electromagnetic utilization of the machine. The models and electric-drive concepts developed in the thesis are evaluated in a practical setup.

Abstract: With the growing interests and high requirements in low-speed linear drives, the linear machines possessing high force density, high power density and high efficiency feature become in great demands for the linear direct-drive applications. There are many available linear machine topologies, but their performances for exhibiting the high-force density capability dissatisfy the industrial requirements. In order to solve this problem, the new machine topologies emphasizing on high force density are explored and studied. The objective of this thesis is to present the design, analysis, and application of permanent magnet (PM) linear machines which can offer a higher force density at the same magnetic loading and electric loading than the conventional machines. Although in recent years there are many emerging advanced PM rotational machines for direct-drive rotational drives, the development of advanced PM linear machines for direct-drive linear drives is sparse. In spite of the motion type of electric machines, the inherent operating principle is the same. By studying and borrowing concepts of the high torque density rotational electric machines, the linear machine morphologies of the promising candidates are designed and analyzed. The problems and side effects resulting from the linearization are discussed and suppressed. Two main approaches for machine design and analysis are developed and applied, namely the analytical calculation and the finite element method (FEM). By analytically solving the magnetic field problem, the relationships between the field quantities and the machine geometry are unveiled. With the use of analytical calculation, the machine design and dimension optimization are conveniently achieved. With the use of FEM, the machine design objective and its electromagnetic performance are verified and evaluated. Finally, the proposed low-speed PM linear machine is applied for direct-drive wave power generation. By mathematically modeling the wave power, generation system and the generator, the conditions for maximum power harvesting are determined. By using the vector control, the generator output power is maximized which is verified by the simulation results. DOI: 10.5353/th_b4832972 Subjects: Permanent magnet motors Electromechanical devices

Book Third Harmonic Utilization in Permanent Magnet Machines

Download or read book Third Harmonic Utilization in Permanent Magnet Machines written by Kai Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the utilization of harmonics in the permanent magnet (PM) or rotor shape to improve the torque density of PM brushless AC machines including three-phase inner rotor and outer rotor machines, five-phase machines, dual three-phase machines, linear machines, by means of analytical, finite element analyses, and as well as experimental validation. The torque density can be improved while the torque ripple remains low in PM shaping utilizing the 3rd harmonic. In this book, the analytical expression of output torque is derived for PM machines with rotor shape using the 3rd harmonic, and then the optimal 3rd harmonic for maximizing torque is analytically obtained. The book compares the PM shape in surface-mounted PM (SPM) machines and the rotor lamination shape in interior PM (IPM) machines utilizing the 3rd harmonic, and it becomes clear that their shaping methods and amount of torque improvement are different. In a five-phase PM machine, the 3rd harmonic can be utilized in both the current waveform and PM shapes to further improve the output torque. For the dual three-phase SPM machines without deteriorating the torque more than 30% when the optimal 3rd harmonic into both the current and PM shape are injected. The harmonics in airgap flux density have significant influence on the cogging torque, stator iron flux distribution, and radial force between the rotor and stator. These effects has been investigated as well in this book.

Book Application of Magnetic Hysteresis Modeling to the Design and Analysis of Electrical Machines

Download or read book Application of Magnetic Hysteresis Modeling to the Design and Analysis of Electrical Machines written by Maged Ibrahim and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) with rare-earth magnets are widely used in the traction drives of electrical and hybrid electrical vehicles, as they can provide high efficiency and torque density. Due to the possibility of future shortage of rare-earth materials, it is essential for electric vehicle industry to find alternative magnet technologies that can provide a substitute for rare-earth PMSMs. Permanent magnet machines with Alnico magnets can theoretically provide torque densities comparable to rare-earth PMSMs, due to their high remnant flux density. However, these magnets are rarely used in the conventional designs of PMSMs, as they can be demagnetized by the armature field. The thesis presents a novel design for permanent magnet machines with Alnico magnets. The proposed design can provide high air gap flux density at no-load, and the armature field at full load tends to enhance the magnet flux. Therefore, the machine can operate with high torque density even under severe loading conditions. The demagnetization characteristics of Alnico magnets are also utilized to achieve high efficiency at a wide speed range, as the magnet flux is reduced at high speeds by armature current pulses that dissipate negligible losses, thus avoiding the additional copper losses of the continuous flux weakening current in conventional rare-earth PMSMs. The simulation of the demagnetization and magnetization dynamics of the proposed machine design requires considering the hysteresis characteristics of the permanent magnets. Therefore, finite element analysis (FEA) simulations for the designed machine are performed using a linearized hysteresis model for Alnico magnets. The thesis also aims to improve the design and modeling of electrical machines by developing computationally efficient methods for incorporating the hysteresis characteristics of electrical steel into electrical machine models.
