Book Design and Integration of a Flight Management System for the Unmanned Air Vehicle Frog

Download or read book Design and Integration of a Flight Management System for the Unmanned Air Vehicle Frog written by Timothy C. Rivers and published by . This book was released on 1998-12-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to design, integrate and flight test a Flight Management System (FMS) for the computer control of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV). By combining modern control design techniques and the capabilities of a Rapid Prototyping System (RPS), we were able to safely go from concept to flight test in a relatively short amount of time without sacrificing thoroughness in computer simulation, code validation and verification, or hardware-in-the-loop ground testing. This ability to quickly field new or modified flight control systems for UAV's is of ever increasing importance as Department of Defense places greater emphasis on the use of UAV's in widely varying mission areas. The primary focus of this thesis is on the design and testing of a heading controller. However, to fully integrate this into the FMS, the research and testing includes airspeed and altitude controllers designed by previous thesis students. Also included as part of the implementation process, is a thorough sensor evaluation to ensure the controller inputs are adequate to support the FMS. The design and test equipment include a highly modified FROG UAV from the U.S. Army, the MATRIX Product Family of software tools developed by Integrated Systems, Inc., and a Ground Station built at NPS from commercially available computer and communication equipment.

Book Design and Evaluation of a Digital Flight Control System for the FROG Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Download or read book Design and Evaluation of a Digital Flight Control System for the FROG Unmanned Aerial Vehicle written by Christopher H. Flood and published by . This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to current and future military operations cannot be understated. This rapidly developing field requires the ability to quickly develop and evaluate advanced control concepts. The FROG UAV serves as a test bed for advanced control and sensor projects at the Naval Postgraduate School. Previous control system projects have made use of a low performance electromechanical autopilot onboard the UAV. This autopilot imposed significant limitations on the responsiveness of the FROG. This project developed and tested an off board digital flight control system for use in lieu of the previous electromechanical device. The digital flight controller was developed using the Matrixx rapid prototyping system and a previously validated dynamic model of the FROG. Surrogate flight control servo actuators were characterized in the laboratory and added to the plant model. Classic inner/ outer loop controllers were developed for yaw damping and speed, altitude and heading control. The system was then successfully demonstrated%ted with hardware in the loop in the lab. The FROG was then instrumented and a command uplink latency of 170 MS was discovered. This introduced excessive phase lag into the system, which drove the flight controllers unstable. An alternate serial uplink method was developed and tested which reduced the command latency to 76 MS however the remaining phase lag resulted in limit cycle oscillation. Laboratory tests indicated that the current flight controller could withstand a maximum of 50 MS command path delay; without modification.

Book Nonlinear Control of Fixed Wing UAVs with Time Varying and Unstructured Uncertainties

Download or read book Nonlinear Control of Fixed Wing UAVs with Time Varying and Unstructured Uncertainties written by Michail G. Michailidis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a comprehensive and mathematically rigorous controller design for families of nonlinear systems with time-varying parameters and unstructured uncertainties. Although the presented methodology is general, the specific family of systems considered is the latest, NextGen, unconventional fixed-wing unmanned aircraft with circulation control or morphing wings, or a combination of both. The approach considers various sources of model and parameter uncertainty, while the controller design depends not on a nominal plant model, but instead on a family of admissible plants. In contrast to existing controller designs that consider multiple models and multiple controllers, the proposed approach is based on the ‘one controller fits all models’ within the unstructured uncertainty interval. The book presents a modeling-based analysis and synthesis approach with additive uncertainty weighting functions for accurate realization of the candidate systems. This differs significantly from existing designs in that it is capable of handling time-varying characteristics. This research monograph is suitable for scientists, engineers, researchers and graduate students with a background in control system theory who are interested in complex engineering nonlinear systems.

Book An Optimal Control Approach to Flight Management Systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Download or read book An Optimal Control Approach to Flight Management Systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles written by Michael Di Perna and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) becoming increasingly present in military and commercial applications, the flight path efficiency and integration with current manned aircraft become important research topics to address in the coming years. This thesis considers three problems relating to UAVs: the optimal control of a single quadrotor UAV, a multi-agent coverage problem, and a software flight management system which can be used on UAVs.The optimal control problem for a quadrotor UAV is considered with a tuning parameter, the cost index, used in flight management systems to trade-off between time and energy costs. A state-feedback control law is developed and simulation results are presented. A software flight management system (SFMS) using aerospace standard communication protocols is developed and validated with an industry flight simulator. The SFMS allows for the testing of algorithms which can be used on real aircraft (manned or unmanned) without requiring access to a costly commercial flight management system. An energy efficient coverage problem from previous work is considered and extended to include agents with second order dynamics using the backstepping technique. The extension to second order dynamics requires the analysis of the dynamics of Voronoi cells. A geometric interpretation is presented for the change in area and change in position of the center of mass for Voronoi cells. Simulation results are presented comparing the first order and second order agents.

Book In Flight Learning Based Flight Control of an Unmanned Aircraft System

Download or read book In Flight Learning Based Flight Control of an Unmanned Aircraft System written by Mohammed Alabsi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) popularity has increased substantially in the last few years. UAVs capabilities continue to improve as a result of advances in battery technology, communication, navigation systems and electronics. Increased popularity has driven researchers to improve UAVs reliability and safety which is reflected by the number of publications and accelerating educational programs interest. UAVs are suited for a wide range of civilian and military applications; however, UAVs currently can not integrate with civilian airspace because of stringent safety requirements. Hence, it is necessary to push the envelope for UAVs design and control so that they can learn from nature and have more self-aware capabilities to improve safety and reliability. This dissertation addresses some challenges involved with flight controller learning based on real-time modeling of UAV. Plenty of UAV applications require different operational capabilities within a composite mission. These capabilities include landing and taking off using short runways, while being able to perform missions that require a high cruise speed i.e. tracking applications. A composite mission also requires the aircraft to be able to hover or operate with low cruise speeds for applications involving stationary moments. All of these different operational modes require a hybrid aircraft design that combines fixed wing aircraft capabilities and Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft capabilities. However, extensive resources required for hybrid aircraft design prohibited the discovery of different revolutionary designs. The work presented in this dissertation describes the development of a rapid modeling, prototyping and controller design platform of an unmanned quadrotor aircraft. Three main objectives are investigated: intelligent excitation input design, real-time parameter estimation, and learning control. Real-time estimation of dynamic model parameters is important for control adaptation. However, the aircraft model estimation performance can be severely degraded by an active control system and highly collinear model terms such as those found on a quadrotor unmanned aircraft. Recursive Fourier Transform Regression was applied to estimate parameters of different model forms/structures and using different excitation levels. The generated models are utilized to reconfigure a Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (NDI) controller considering different testing conditions: normal, failure, and learning flights. Finally,an intelligent input design technique is proposed which enables autonomous identification of the vehicle’s response modal frequencies and emphasizes excitation power accordingly.
