Book Designing Small Weapons

Download or read book Designing Small Weapons written by Jose Martin Herrera-Ramirez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on developing small weapons, following the lifecycle of a firearm from design to manufacture. It demonstrates how modern technologies can be used at every stage of the process, such as design methodologies, CAD/CAE/CAM software, rapid prototyping, test benches, materials, heat and surface treatments, and manufacturing processes. Several case studies are presented to provide detailed considerations on developing specific topics. Small weapons are designed to be carried by one person; examples are pistols, revolvers, rifles, carbines, shotguns, and submachine guns. Beginning with a review of the history of weapons from ancient to modern times, this book builds on this by mapping out recent innovations and state-of-the-art technologies that have advanced small weapon design. Presenting a comprehensive guide to computer design tools used by weapon engineers, this book demonstrates the capabilities of modern software at all stages of the process, looking at the computer-aided design, engineering, and manufacturing. It also details the materials used to create small weapons, notably steels, engineering polymers, composites, and emerging materials. Manufacturing processes, both conventional and unconventional, are discussed, for example, casting, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, and heat and surface treatments. This book is essential reading to those in the field of weapons, such as designers, workers in research and development, engineering and design students, students at military colleges, sportsmen, hunters, and those interested in firearms. Dr. Jose Martin Herrera-Ramirez is a military engineer with experience in the field of weapon and ammunition development. After receiving his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the Paris School of Mines in France, he was the head of the Applied Research Center and Technology Development for the Mexican Military Industry (CIADTIM). He now researches the development of metallic alloys and composites at the Research Center for Advanced Materials (CIMAV) in Chihuahua, Mexico. Dr. Luis Adrian Zuñiga-Aviles is a military engineer with wide experience in the field of weapon and ammunition development. He was head of the prototypes and simulation departments at the Applied Research Center and Technology Development for the Mexican Military Industry (CIADTIM) and head of engineering of the Production directorate. He received his PhD in Science and Technology on Mechatronics from the Center for Engineering and Industrial Development (CIDESI) in Queretaro, Mexico. He now researches the new product design and development for military application, machinery, robotics, and medical devices in the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Mexico State (UAEMex) and the Faculty of Engineering at UAEMex as part of the Researchers for Mexico program CONACYT.

Book Weapons System Sustainment Planning Early in the Development Life Cycle

Download or read book Weapons System Sustainment Planning Early in the Development Life Cycle written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Government Accountability Office, sustainment of weapon systems accounts for approximately 70 percent of the total life-cycle costs. When sustainment is not considered early in the development process or as an integral part of the systems engineering design, it can negatively affect the ability of the Air Force to maintain and improve the weapon system once it enters service. At the request of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, Weapons Systems Sustainment Planning Early in the Development Life Cycle identifies at what point or phase of the development of a weapons system sustainment planning should be integrated into the program; examines and provides recommendations regarding how sustainment planning should be evaluated throughout the development process; investigates and describes the current challenges with sustainment planning and determines what changes have occurred throughout the acquisition process that may have eroded sustainment planning; and identifies opportunities for acquisitions offices to gain greater access to sustainment expertise.

Book A Technical History of America s Nuclear Weapons

Download or read book A Technical History of America s Nuclear Weapons written by Peter a Goetz and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Second Edition of A Technical History of America's Nuclear Weapons: Volume I - Introduction and Nuclear Developments Through 1960. It is called a technical history because it focuses on nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons (delivery) systems. The people, laboratories, and politicians who championed these weapons have been dealt with by other authors. For the convenience of the Reader, Volume I has an introductory section that places the American nuclear arsenal into its historical context and provides the basic technical background needed to understand the weapon's mechanisms. Included are chapters on weapon design, the military-industrial complex, and stockpile logistics. These are followed by a discussion intended to clearly convey what would have happened if nuclear weapons were ever put to use. The introduction closes with a review of early warning and targeting, nuclear war plans, the deployment of nuclear forces, and the evolution of strategic doctrine during the period of the Cold War. It also includes sections on non-proliferation and the current management of the US Nuclear Stockpile. This story is told in a straightforward easy to understand manner. The use of equations is shunned. Albert Einstein declared that if you can't tell a story without the use of mathematics, you really don't understand your subject matter. The second half of Volume I examines early American nuclear weapons and delivery systems. It combines development histories with engineering descriptions to illustrate the performance characteristics of the weapons and the design challenges that faced their developers. Basic data about weapon operation, delivery systems, and deployments are also included. Like the First Edition, this Second Edition is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of photographs.Volume I: 1) Has about 1,000 selected references, grouped into related categories 2) Uses official Military Characteristic (Parts) Numbers for components where available, a very useful tool for internet searches 3)Provides detailed information on the production of uranium and its enrichment in for use in nuclear weapons 4) Provides detailed information on the recovery of plutonium from spent fuel rods and the casting of plutonium cores 5) Outlines the evolution of nuclear pits: solid, composite, levitated, hollow, boosted, linear and linear boosted. 6) Provides information on explosives and the methods used to compress fissile cores, especially the plastic bonded explosives (PBX) produced at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant, Kingsport, Tennessee 7) Outlines the development of the batteries and the arming, fuzing, and firing (X-Unit) systems used in various nuclear MARKs and MODs 8) Outlines the internal and external electronic neutron initiation systems used in various nuclear MARKs and MODs 9)Describes boosted warheads, the forerunners to the hydrogen bomb 10) Follows the race to develop hydrogen bombs and investigates the first generation of multi-megaton weapons and their delivery aircraft.
