Book Heat as a Source of Power

Download or read book Heat as a Source of Power written by William Petit Trowbridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat as a Source of Power: With Applications of General Principles to the Construction of Steam Generators, an Introduction to the Study of Heat-Engines These elementary principles constitute the real basis of the science of heat, in its chemical as well as its dynamic relations, and a thorough comprehension of them is necessarily the first step to be taken in the study of heat-engines. The steam-engine being the principal heat-engine in use at the present day, prominence must be given to the study of the steam generator, as the apparatus through which all processes preliminary to the actual use of steam are accomplished. Book The Theory of Heat Engines Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory of Heat Engines Classic Reprint written by William Inchley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Heat Engines This book has been written mainly for engineering students, and covers the ground required for University and similar examinations in the theory Of heat engines. It will also be found suitable for students reading for the examinations of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution Of Mechanical Engineers, the City and Guilds of London Institute, and the Board of Education, and should prove useful to the engineer who desires a thorough knowledge of the theory of the subject. The Author feels that no apology is necessary for adding yet another book on this subject because, although many excellent books exist which deal solely with one or two special branches Of the subject, there are very few which deal with the subject as a whole. An attempt has here been made to give in a complete and concise form the thermodynamical and mechanical principles of the subject; to that end all purely descriptive matter has been designedly omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics of the Steam Engine and Other Heat-Engines This work is designed to give instruction to students in technical schools in the methods and results of the application of thermodynamics to engineering. While it has been consid ered desirable to follow commonly accepted methods, some parts differ from other text-books, either in Substance or in manner of presentation, and may require a few words of explanation. The general theory or formal presentation of thermodynam ics is that employed by the majority of writers, and was pre pared with the view oi presenting clearly the difficulties inher ent in the subject, and of giving familiarity with the processes employed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Practice in Heat Engines A resident engineer at one of our experimental sea stations during the war, who was an expert in what Kipling once called the Bridge dam-girder line, was present at a committee meeting when the silent propulsion of ships was under discussion. He said: Gentlemen, at our station experiments are being carried out on a new type of engine, which is so silent that it is called the still engine.' If this book ever reaches that engineer's library, I shall feel that it has not been written altogether in vain. I may even go further and express the hope that the steam section will interest the internal-combustion engineer, and vice vend. Book Thermodynamics Heat Motors and Refrigerating Machines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thermodynamics Heat Motors and Refrigerating Machines Classic Reprint written by De Volson Wood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics, Heat Motors, and Refrigerating Machines The following work has been prepared to meet a want experienced by myself in my course of instruction in Thermodynamics. After reading several works upon the subject, including those of the founders of the science - Rankine, Clausius, Thomson - I was most favorably impressed with the spirit of Rankine's mode of discussing the subject. It is in keeping with the modern method of treating Analytical Mechanics, in which the analysis is founded upon ideal conditions established by definitions, and the resulting formulas modified to represent the infinite variety of conditions in nature. But Rankine's giant-like processes are not adapted to the wants of the average student. Article 241 of his Steam Engine and other Prime Movers reaches the height of sublimity in regard to terseness, comprehensiveness, and obscurity. Without a proper preliminary, he crowds into a few words a principle which has cost other writers protracted labor and heroic efforts to establish. My aim has not been to bring down the subject to the comprehension of the reader, but to lead him up, by a more easy and uniformly graded path, to the same height, and at the same time familiarize him with the way by a free use of illustrations, exercises, historic references, and numerical examples.
