The focus of the volume is to evaluate the performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands in treating domestic wastewater to establish the limit that can be safely discharged to agricultural drains. Two-step procedures were used for the preparation of this book. Using modeling and statistical analyses of treated water samples showed a significant difference between different media for the treatment of most pollutants. The authors went on to design artificial neural network models (ANNs) using Matlab software to simulate some of the experimental data and to anticipate the parameters of output concentration. The wetland systems have the ability to deal with various pollutants with different concentrations and to decrease the treated water to the standard limits. This volume presents the main role of emergent plants for treatment performance in the constructed wetlands and will be a very important resource for engineers in this field as well as for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Beer production generates large quantities of wastewater in the brewing, sanitation, and cooling processes. Conventional approaches for brewery wastewater treatment often rely on treatment systems that require large inputs of energy, or in the case of microbreweries and small commercial breweries, involve the direct discharge into municipal sanitary sewer systems. The introduction of a constructed wetland as part of a treatment program in large volume operations, or as a stand-alone system in smaller operations can greatly reduce the energy requirements needed to produce an environmentally acceptable effluent. In the present study, brewery wastewater from a small local brewery was used to test the treatment efficiency of a Subsurface Filtration Pilot Plant (SFPP) with minimal inputs. The SFPP is a pilot-scale, subsurface-flow constructed wetland (SSF CWL) designed to evaluate treatment performance. The objective of this study was to produce evidence supporting the hypothesis that the utilization of SSF CWL systems in the treatment of brewery wastewater, and other similar wastewaters from the food processing industry, can significantly improve wastewater characteristics as measured by BOD reduction and turbidity improvement over time. A secondary objective of this study was to detect significant differences between the filter media used in this study; stone, lava rock, and wood chips, and provide recommendations on which filter media provides the best results"--Abstract.
