Book Design and Implementation of a Characterization Test Rig for Evaluating High Bandwidth Liquid Fuel Flow Modulators

Download or read book Design and Implementation of a Characterization Test Rig for Evaluating High Bandwidth Liquid Fuel Flow Modulators written by Joseph R. Saus and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test rig was designed and developed at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) for the purpose of characterizing high bandwidth liquid fuel flow modulator candidates to determine their suitability for combustion instability control research. The test rig is capable of testing flow modulators at up to 600 psia supply pressure and flows of up to 2 gpm. The rig is designed to provide a quiescent flow into the test section in order to isolate the dynamic flow modulations produced by the test article. Both the fuel injector orifice downstream of the test article and the combustor are emulated. The effect of fuel delivery line lengths on modulator dynamic performance can be observed and modified to replicate actual fuel delivery systems. For simplicity, water is currently used as the working fluid, although future plans are to use jet fuel. The rig is instrumented for dynamic pressures and flows and a high-speed data system is used for dynamic data acquisition. Preliminary results have been obtained for one candidate flow modulator.

Book A Test Device for Premixed Gas Turbine Combustion Oscillations

Download or read book A Test Device for Premixed Gas Turbine Combustion Oscillations written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses design and operation of a single-nozzle test combustor for studying lean, premixed combustion oscillations from gas turbine fuel nozzles. It was used to study oscillations from a prototype fuel nozzle that produced oscillations during testing in a commercial engine. Similar, but not identical, oscillations were recorded in the test device. Basic requirements of the device design were that the flame geometry be maintained and acoustic losses be minimized; this was achieved by using a Helmholtz resonator as the combustor geometry. Surprisingly, the combustor oscillated strongly at several frequencies, without modification of the resonator. Brief survey of operating conditions suggests that it may be helpful to characterize oscillating behavior in terms of reference velocity and inlet air temperature with the rig backpressure playing a smaller role. The preliminary results do not guarantee that the single-nozzle test device will reproduce arbitrary oscillations that occur on a complete engine test. Nozzle/nozzle interactions may complicate the response, and oscillations controlled by acoustic velocities transverse to the nozzle axis may not be reproduced in a test device that relies on a bulk Helmholtz mode. Nevertheless, some oscillations can be reproduced, and the single-nozzle test device allows both active and passive control strategies to be tested relatively inexpensively.

Book Measurements and Designs Related to Electrical Spray Modification in a T 56 Combustor

Download or read book Measurements and Designs Related to Electrical Spray Modification in a T 56 Combustor written by Zeev Shavit and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new optical technique for measuring Sauter Mean Diameter changes of a fuel spray under an electrostatic field was checked, calibrated, and implemented. The optical technique is based on measuring scattered light at two angles using a variable focal length apparatus. Special attention was given to improving the electrical control loop parameters in order to minimize measurement errors. In order to measure more realistically the effects of the electrostatic probe inside a gas turbine combustor, a pressure chamber was added to the outlet of the present combustion simulation device. Hot tests were carried out with diesel fuel DF-2. Pressure chamber, combustor's temperatures, fuel, and air mass flow rates, were recorded together with the voltage applied at the electrode. Results of the cold tests with the new optical device show a Sauter Mean Diameter of 50.0 micron at fuel pressure (DF-2) of 100 psi, 51.7 micron at 125 psi and 47.8 micron at 80 psi. The device could not resolve changes while the high voltage field was exerted. Combustion temperatures with the pressure chamber are presented. Preliminary designs for improvements of the various devices are also described. Keywords: Particle measurement; Sauter mean diameter, T56 jet engine combustors; Electrostatic atomization; Alternative fuels; Optical radiometers.

Book Full Annular Rig Development of the FT8 Gas Turbine Combustor

Download or read book Full Annular Rig Development of the FT8 Gas Turbine Combustor written by T. G. Fox and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of developmental testing in a high-pressure, full annular combustion section of the FT8 industrial gas turbine are presented. Base power conditions were simulated at approximately 60 percent of burner pressure. All aspects of combustion performance with liquid fuel were investigated, including starting, blowout, exit temperature signature, emissions, smoke, and liner wall temperature. Configurational change were made to improve liner cooling, reduce emissions, adjust pressure loss, and modify exit temperature profile. The effects of water injection on emissions and performance were evaluated in the final test run. Satisfactory performance in all areas was demonstrated with further refinements to be carried out during developmental engine testing.

Book Advanced Hot Section Materials and Coatings Test Rig

Download or read book Advanced Hot Section Materials and Coatings Test Rig written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase I of the Hyperbaric Advanced Hot Section Materials & Coating Test Rig Program has been successfully completed. Florida Turbine Technologies has designed and planned the implementation of a laboratory rig capable of simulating the hot gas path conditions of coal gas fired industrial gas turbine engines. Potential uses of this rig include investigations into environmental attack of turbine materials and coatings exposed to syngas, erosion, and thermal-mechanical fatigue. The principle activities during Phase 1 of this project included providing several conceptual designs for the test section, evaluating various syngas-fueled rig combustor concepts, comparing the various test section concepts and then selecting a configuration for detail design. Conceptual definition and requirements of auxiliary systems and facilities were also prepared. Implementation planning also progressed, with schedules prepared and future project milestones defined. The results of these tasks continue to show rig feasibility, both technically and economically.

Book Micro Gas Turbine Intake Design for Test Rig Airflow Adaptation and Air Mass Flow Measurement

Download or read book Micro Gas Turbine Intake Design for Test Rig Airflow Adaptation and Air Mass Flow Measurement written by Pablo Alejandro Álvarez Cebrián and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work is the study and design of a bell mouth inlet duct. The project is divided in several phases: literature review, design with CAD tool, simulation with a CFD tool, location of probes and measuring equipment and finally construction, assembly and commissioning budget. In the first phase of the literature review, it has been studied what are test rig facilities, as well as the objectives of bell mouth inlet ducts and why are necessary. In the design phase, three different bell mouths have been designed taking into account that the elliptical streamwise radial cross-section for a bell mouth is the best according to previous studies. The three bell mouths have different dimensions (basically, the difference among them is the length of the semi-major axis). Moreover, the bell mouth inlet ducts have been designed taking into account that should be able to work with the micro gas turbine EvoJet B170 Neo. In the CFD simulation phase, the three bell mouth inlet ducts have been simulated to know which one is better in terms of air flow adaptation and the results of the air mass flow at different locations when changing outlet static pressures. Firstly, the total pressure has been maintained constant at 1 atm (101325 Pa) and at the bell mouth outlet, a static pressure of 100075 Pa has been imposed so that the pressure gradient has created a suction of the air. Finally, it has been decided to choose to use bell mouth 1 in the EvoJet. Different static pressures from 99500 Pa to 93175 Pa, and then from 90000 Pa to 50000 Pa have been imposed to study the air flow behavior through out the bell mouth at different velocities. Moreover, the velocity and pressure variation in function of the radius at different locations x along the inlet have been studied: v(r,x) and p (r,x). It has also been studied how changed the velocity and pressure values along the duct at different gradient pressures studying the values of points located along the duct. The next phase has been the placement of probes to obtain a good estimation of the air mass flow. The necessary probe equipment as well as the location have been justified. Also the measuring instruments. The last phase of the project has been the construction, assembly and commissioning budget. To do it, the physical properties of various materials have been studied briefly to know which is the best material from an economic and qualitative point of view. The result has been 6061 aluminum and nylon. For this reason, a factory has been contacted in order to know which is the price for creating an aluminum 6061 bell mouth, and a nylon bell mouth. The probes prices have also been included in the total sum price of the budget.
